My post(s) don't appear where they should. Methinks a technical problem.

Welcome very much here, James!
In this "game" doesn't matter what personal Prog definition we use. The important thing is which albums of the top 30 list, we would rate very high. So, your result are all 13 albums which gives you a total score of 758 points.

Okay, guys, let us say that the first part of this event is finished. I have assigned each person a number of points which are the sum of points assigned all the albums chosen plus additional points depending on the number of albums chosen and the similarity of one's ranking with the ranking on the top 30 list. This gives following total result: Lewian - 666 + 250 = 916 James - 538 + 220 = 758 David - 486 + 180 = 666 JD - 474 + 190 = 664 Nogbad - 460 + 180 = 640 P. Paul - 422 + 180 = 602 Nick - 430 + 170 = 600 Mirakaze - 436 + 140 = 576 Cristi - 406 + 120 = 526 Prophesy - 308 + 70 = 378 Essexboy - 256 + 60 = 316 Grumpy - 224 + 40 = 264 Shadowyzard - 118 + 20 = 138 progaardvark - 150 (for independence) suitkees - 50 (for originality)

Here it goes.
This second part is entirely different from the first one, and requires, I think, much more consideration. It's of course everyone's own choice whether to join it, but I hope you find it as an interesting discussion. Well, my initial thinking about it is that our chosen albums are an expression of our personal musical taste while the top 30 list can be said to be an expression of general opinion about these albums. So, I have been thinking about the question whether one can conclude something about own taste in relation to the general opinion, and whether there might be a difference between the persons in the top of our rating result list and those in the lower part (here we could surely use some more persons who chose a small number of albums). What do you think?

^ David, did you see my post at the bottom of the previous page? I think there's a technical problem and it was placed before your posts which had been posted earlier than mine.

I can see your post now, and I'll include your result in our result list. Edit: I couldn't send any post for a while, either.

And welcome very much to you, Shadowyzard. I'm happy to hear that you share my approach which also in fact is very good in this event, as you with only three albums represent the lower part of our result list. But I think, it would be good with a comment about it related to what I'd like us now to discuss.
Edit: I mean, what do you think of all the other albums? By the way, you're right about this "David from Denmark".

I think there's much more to say about those things, Grumpy, and depending on who's saying it - and maybe even problematise them. So maybe, it could be more constructive if you tried to get deeper with them, and I know your perspective is somehow different from quite a few others. So Grumpy, I think it would be more giving for everybody, if you tried for instance further explain the difference between yours and some others result.

And something else, Grumpy, I think it's very good to reflect on in what degree one's personal taste align with general opinion because it can for instance be relevant in relation to use or not use "objective" lists in one's searching for new music.
It has for instance been very giving for me to use "objective" lists but it might be quite a waste of time for some others - and I think it's good to be aware of that. One may have some other critical viewing of using "objective" lists, and I think that would be good to discuss with others, as well.

There is no objective view of music, it's all subjective. My personal tastes have always been niche and have gotten more so over time. People on PA and PE have tastes that are more in line with mine so I value those opinions higher. There is a small group of individuals who tastes are a lot closer to mine the I generally check out their suggestions a lot. Other than that I explore and buy, or not.

And Grumpy, I'm aware of that those things don't make you feel quite good, so you need to do some work with them.

This. Absolutely this. Any attempt to find some objective view will always be futile, because it simply does not exist. My personal tastes are barely represented by the list that makes this game. Like Ian, I tend to pay attention to the opinions of the forum members who have tastes that are more closely aligned with mine (and Ian is one such, and I always check out his suggestions). I tend to pay very little attention to lists, except for (Just For) fun, and my exploration of music is largely quite independent from anything discussed on PA (which tends to be a near continuous regurgitation of the same old, same old…). |

There absolutely are objective views on music. I deem no one's tastes superior or inferior to mine, and it is totally subjective. Whilst, if someone says that Cradle of Filth is not a melodic band (it happened here), s/he is definitely and objectively wrong. If someone says Rick Astley is not popular (again happened here), s/he is outright wrong. If someone says that Guns N' Roses' bass guitar player is a grand virtuoso (it happened on another forum), s/he is wrong. And everytime you point this/these out, people play the "subjectivity card". I find this ridiculous. Someone can even say that PF's music is blissful, or even prog music is for idiots. Such takes are subjective, and I respect that. But honestly, I find this "everything is subjective" trick cheap. Very cheap. P.S. The part above is a broad and a general take. So, you don't have to see this as directed to you or any other particular person. Edited by Shadowyzard - November 07 2021 at 08:36 |
