Hey everyone,
I was wondering what your opinions were on Marillion remixes. I realize these guys have issued quite a few remixes of their albums over the years, so I guess my question is the following: which run of remixes do you think is best? I recently listened to Steven Wilson's remix of Brave and it was spectacular. I'm currently listening to the 2019 remix of Afraid of Sunlight and it's much brighter than the original. I'm in two minds about the brightness as some of the songs are particularly brooding and deserve a darker tone, but I do enjoy how clear all the instruments are. What do you guys think?

I was tempted by the Brave remix, but decided not to bother.
As a rule, I don’t bother with these remixes from any band. I prefer the original output and all most of them do is attempt to change the sound, not the tracks themselves, and if the sound was so bad in the first place then I would never listen to it anyway. I understand that bands are always looking for different strands of income, and that is good, but I have paid over loads of money over the years and do not want to pay even more for something I already have and am perfectly happy with.

A while back I had the misfortune to come across the remixed version of Sgt Pepper. All I can say is you don't tinker with a classic.

Are we actually talking remixes or remasters?

^^ Since, apparently, Steven Wilson worked on it I guess we're talking about remixes and not just remasters (wouldn't see the interest of remasters of albums that were probably recorded digitally, but I might be wrong on that...). I very much like the Afraid of Sunlight album, but the CD already sounds very good to me. Curious to hear the remix, though, but like laz I will not invest in it before having heard it before on my sound system, which thus might be a bit difficult without investing in it first, which I won't do without having heard it first... I’m hanging out for Wilson’s remix of Broadsword next year. Does he remove any horrible 80s drum sounds? Any noticeable improvement in the drums on these?

Thanks for keeping people on topic here!
I'm talking about Marillion re-mixes. I hadn't realized the earlier ones had been remasters, so that's my bad, sorry. I found Wilson's remixes of drums to be great! I'm not an audiophile, Wilson's remix of Brave sounded amazing to me. The Afraid of Sunlight remix (by someone I don't know) was also good, but not on par with Wilson's. If you're not into buying/spending more on remixes, I get that. Though you should know that Marillion is actually posting album- or song-length samples of their remixes on their youtube channel. While YT might not offer the highest quality sound, I think it might be enough to push some of us over the edge and get us to buy the originals.

The 2013 remix of Radiation was a godsend. It wasn't done by Wilson. It brought vibrancy and life to the album. And as a result, it's become one of my favorites. This is the only Marillion remix I have, and I got it specifically because the original mix was too dense. I'm not interested in the later Wilson remixes as the other albums sound great to me.

I know that the band were not overly happy with the original production of Radiation. However, probably owing to the fact that Phil Beaumont gave me an advance listen at the studios in Oswestry where it was recorded, I have always had a wee soft spot for it.

Harlow and then Wickford. When my parents reconciled after separating in 1976, it was too his old home town of Oswestry in Shropshire. Stayed there for 23 years before moving to Wales with work in 1999. I still support Arsenal in footie and Harlequins in rugby and am a proud Sais in Wales. Love it here, actually, especially as .I met the wife when I moved!

The 2021 remix of Fugazi is lovely, bringing out the wonderous bass work of Pete Trewavas that bit extra. In fact the whole package is all I could ever ask for. Fascinating interviews charting the transition of the band and the pressure they were under at the time to deliver after the impact of the debut.

Nice. I’ve never been much of an audiophile but I just hate bad sounding drums from the 80s lol. Mainly 83-93 era. Too loud, too much reverb etc. I’ve become more fussy with production lately though. Some cool albums from the early 70s are spoilt by messy production |

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Even remasters can sometimes go overboard and be too much. Sometimes there is too much of a volume boost and frequency boost (esp. high and low end), that what was pleasant before now becomes harsh. Some though "get it", like Steven Wilson (understand what "not" to do).

Remasters can be done by anyone. Very limited. Remixing can improve the listening experience of most old albums. Wilson is pretty good. Occasionally he over does it with the bass drum but I can adjust my bass level ![]() |

I moved to Wales in 2000, through work. Live in Bridgend now... Originally from Brentwood. My parents wedding reception was held in The White Hart on Brentwood high street, which eventually became The Sugar Hut and was central to a reality-based TV show (which I have never watched!!!) And I still vaguely follow West Ham!
