I always though System of a Down was kind of like punk prog in some ways. I'm sure many here would disagree.

Of course it exists. Cardiacs are the most famous example. I made this list on Rate Your Music It's a small but interesting cross-pollination! |

The bands I seem to hear mentioned the most in regards to this are:
Cardiacs The Stranglers Soft Boys Wire And possibly Television (I saw them live and they seemed more progressive than punk to me but they are almost always considered punk). Edited by AFlowerKingCrimson - November 03 2021 at 14:10 |

I think so called Art Punk is a good suggestion to investigate further. RYM describes this subgenre in this way:
"Combination of stripped-down Punk Rock with "arty" elements of Minimalism, instrumental interplay, elements of Traditional Folk Music, experimentation with Jazz or Funk rhythms, dissonance, and noise experimentation." And that's inside the Prog definition I'd recommend (http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=72615&FID=58). The highest ranked album in this subgenre on RYM is Television's Marqee Moon which seems quite proggy for me as well, and could maybe be classified on PA as Crossover Prog.

But if you're looking for some interesting Punk influenced music, I can surely recommend
Before (DK) - Wish of Life (1982) which is classified as Post-Punk (more experimenting then usual Punk). |

Cardiacs, Wipers, Wire, No Means No, Unwound, This Heat, Camberwell Now, Deep Turtle.
Those are some that may fall under that category, to a different extent.

NoMeansNo (already mentioned) is probably the best example I can think of.
Also Creedle, a little-known San Diego band from the 90s. 3 fine albums. Definitely worth a listen. PA Artist Page - Creedle Edited by HolyMoly - November 03 2021 at 15:28 |

Yeah, SOAD had quite a few prog elements despite being mostly known as an alt-metal band, so I can agree there. I would also say Off Minor and At the Drive-in could be good examples of punk prog. The former combined post-hardcore, jazz, and math rock; the latter was like a really surrealist and artsy version of 90s/00s post-hardcore (it doesn't surprise me that they would eventually split off into The Mars Volta)

You might also want to try “Wrong”, which combines really complex parts with a much more aggressive and punky sound on more concise songs (it’s a fan favorite too). The nucleus of the band is a pair of brothers on bass & drums, both amazing players (I would call the drummer a virtuoso on the level of Bruford), and the parts they write (and sing over- great lyrics too) can be pretty amazing to hear.
