Interactive poll # ?!: The Rocking Ladies

1. Heather Nova -  Snicollete, the song had a great Groove with smooth vocals to start then a nice build and the song gets going. Very modern feel and not stuck in the classic rock genre. Very harmonious while still passionate and heart felt and the lyrics are gorgeous. It took a few listens and then it got more enjoyable and addictive. It was a 7+ but now the song has moved to an 8+ - so not sure what I am going to do for a vote as its tied. 8+

2. Blood Ceremony - Cristi, the opening flute gave a false flag of what was to come which was a punk/rock vibe. Loved the sound of the guitar. Vocal depth was warm and crunchy at the same time. Nice overtone to the song as a whole and I really liked that it was a sort of merged genre. Guitar sound is amazing. It also was 7+ but now an 8+ - not sure what's going on here (and I hate being so wishy-washy)  

3. Eskaton – Logan, Wow! Lots of white noise and strange atmosphere and has a general psych feel – wondering what will be next with this song and dark foreboding future. Enjoyed the free style vocals mimicking the keyboard, nicely done. Rocking in a different way but certainly intense. Song evolves into more intense and complicated rhythm with the following along vocals. Once again, now as i am listening for about the 3rd or 4th time the song is becoming something i am now familiar with and it is more up my alley than I previously thought. This one is about patience and letting the song do its thing. It was a 7 initially but now an 8 as it could have been included as part of the sound track to The Wickerman. I liked that your choice was not the typical vocal entry. 

4. Dead Sara – Geo, Hard driving rock intro and juicy vocals are straight to the point, clear and with lots of passion. Love it! Nice riff. Her voice fits perfectly with the sound and the distortion is spot on. Her voice almost breaks at points , right on the edge. High energy. 8 (but it may increase). 

5. Ustmamo – Lorenzo, once again a very special nominee, with superb production and plenty of space in the over all sound. Vocals were a lightening strike straight to the heart and I enjoyed again a kind of punky garage rocking vibe. At first I didn't even recognize it was Italian and thought it was Scandinavian sort of like the the Ellipse song (Finnish) i was considering. both languages and similarly musical in their flow. Like an early 80’s vocals set with 90s rock band. Increased from a 7 to now a 7+

6. Go-A Shum – Lewian, it was a cool choice to go for. I liked the electronic influence and also of course it was a Eurovision contender. Still she rocks out and the vocals are quite interesting. The vibe of the tune certainly has the Balkan Slavic kind of undertone with an almost far eastern influence – not sure !! Not a song I would normally listen to at all but it impressed me none the less. not traditional rock but still a good 7+

7. Breeders – TCat this reminded me of Smash Mouth from the get go and something that I would generally gravitate towards immediately. Song builds slowly and Vocals are great! It is smooth for some time then it begins to get pretty intense. A fun and enjoyable 8

8. Courtney Barnett – Mila, this song has a modern feel and good production. I liked how it could verge on pretention but be humble and honest after all. I really got into this song and love her tone and the Aussie take on things. Lyrics were wonderful. I never heard or listened deliberately to her but will certainly be doing so. A wonderful 9

9. Anna Calvi – Suitkees, there are so many changes in texture here with both the band and the guitar and vocals intertwine as they weave about. Such calm and then some storms throughout the song and more so towards the middle to towards the end of the song. What a wild experience. Vocals alone were a close 10 since they retained raw energy, emotion and passion. 9

10. Arimea – Ronstein, was that a nine string guitar? I never had the pleasure of playing one but it looks quite hard if you do not have a wide and/or large hand. Impressive and powerful vocals and got my head nodding. The song is a masterpiece in so may ways. Operatic, passionate, free and wild, every time you listen to it, it provides something else. I will be 100% listening to more of this band in the future. 9

11. Lee Aaron – JD! What can you say when the first lyrics are “Whatcha Do To My Body”? I didn’t miss the 80s after they ended, but I do now! This one has such musical nostalgia and it possibly could sum up the rock scene of that decade. In my book absolutely a 10 out or 10 in every way. Power, energy, raw passion, the song a perfect gem, the guitars distorting immaculately, the drums pounding down the highway. And woo-ah ! Her growl !! A song I can listen to any day and in whatever mood. A non-complicated song but purely what it is. Rocking!   11 out of 10.

Greg, my apologies, I misunderstood and didn't realize you did choose Eskaton.  I will let my votes stand, however, as they do stay the same, in essence, in review of what was chosen.  I wasn't looking at the poll itself at the end, just my notes.

I posted 4 different kind of songs songs, from different genres, I thought fun to listen to, catchy yet not simplistic in any way.

1. Anna Calvi - Wish: I am familiar with some of her material and have the album with the studio version of Wish. This live version "rocks" and makes me want to see her live.

2. Courtney Barnett - History Eraser: Enjoyed the lyrics and her delivery.

3. Üstmamò - Tannomai: Great attitude and sound. I like that bounce and bass.

Honorable mentions:

Eskaton: Echoing some other opinions, I felt a bit unfair to vote for this one as a more prog/sophiscated song. I appreciate it being nominated as the album is on my ever growing buy list.

Imelda May: Enjoyed this and it barely missed the top three.

Go_A - Shum: If I had a few more listens this could have made my top 3 but only so much time.

And btw. there is also various dark stuff out there which is not necessarily loud, you see?    Mila, typically the original poster has done their selections at the opening of the poll, as Cristi did.  But that doesn't mean it hasn't been done differently, too.   Dark stuff that isn't loud brings to mind all of the dark folk-type bands, many of which are fronted/include women and some are mostly or all women.  But that wouldn't have fit this poll (just thinking of music that strikes ME that way).  Again, it's all truly subjective and not rigid, as far as how people take the direction of a poll, unless the pollster makes it that way in the way they present the poll.
