You do realize that both Zedaya and Timothee Chalametis are the exact same age as Sean Young and Kyle MaclLachlan were when they were in Dune, right? All 25 years old.

And wasn't Paul 15 or so when he met Chani in the novel? Paul was 15 when the Dune novels starts at least as I recall. Chani might have been 13 at the time. Seen conflicting reports on that.

I actually love the Lynch Dune and might go see this new adaptation in the cinema.

EDIT: After writing that, I listened to a podcast that compared Frank Herbert's original Dune, the Lynch Dune adaptation and the Villeneuve directed Dune and one of their complaints about the latest Dune film and the 1984 Lynch one is that Paul and Chani both were/ seemed too old for the roles. Interesting to see such different takes from people -- they were basing it on the original source material (the novel), whereas Doug is basing his opinion on Lynch's adaptation, perhaps? I might re-read Dune. I started to a while back, as I haven't read it since I was about 15. I do think some of us should get together and make a podcast or make a few.

^ Good movie, and a powerful score from Terrence Blanchard.

The last great film I saw in the last few months was Malcolm X, played by Denzel Washington. There are a lot of great, next-level scenes, and the versatility with which Denzel (for me a number one) pulls off his passionate role is astounding. It's a long film (3h 22m) but for progressive rock fans that's no problem, hahaha.

No Time to Die

Not bad, not great, and an unclear future for the Bond franchise.

Dead End (France - 2003): Only one thing could save this gosh-awful movie from getting a 1/10, and it happened. 3/10

the Last Shift (2014) Directed by Anthony DiBlasi

Rookie cop's first day on the force has her assigned to looking after an abandoned Police Station prior to it's permanent closure the next morning. Bored but eager to please her superiors, the likeable and beautiful Officer Loren (Juliana Harkavy) avoids encroaching tedium until things take a distinctly sinister turn and her routine chore turns into a harrowing ordeal. Reference points are fairly easy to spot in the last Shift, from Assault on Precinct 13, the criminally neglected Let Us Prey from the same year, to echoes of the Manson family cult but it's never derivative and manages to exploit its single location/solitary actress budget limitations to telling effect. Some of the imagery is genuinely unsettling so it's not a horror for the feint of heart (and if any are, they ain't worthy of the name) There is also a plot twist at the conclusion I genuinely didn't anticipate which is well worth sticking around for. More psychological thriller with horror elements than standard issue horror, it's a tale of an idealistic young woman's mental disintegration when confronted with ghosts of the past (real or imagined) and a very interesting tangent on how so many otherwise rational and intelligent females somehow get sucked into the black hole event horizons of the likes of Charles Manson, Ian Brady, Richard Ramirez, Jimmy Boyle, David Koresh, Warren Jeffs, Keith Raniere et al. Credibly creepy throughout, choc full of jump scares and with a knack for tourniquet tight suspense, the Last Shift might have a few glaring plot holes here and there but is great value for it's modest outlay in cinematic resources.

Cypher (US - 2002): Like Xchange (2001) with a HUGE, actually MASSIVE upgrade. But flawed. I'll not mention that major flaw, to abstain from spoiling the fun. All I can say is that, the Americans should sometimes use "natural" events instead of "their" typical deus ex machinas, to save the "precious" protagonists. Like a heart attack of the bad guy in a climactic moment, passing out of him because of the tension etc. I mean, seriously... Sadly I'll not rate an American movie with 10/10, again. Yet, it is extremely entertaining and mind-boggling. To the extent that, it can be disturbing for some or most. Moderately original, too many references. They also purloined stuff from some earlier films such as The Matrix, The Truman Show, and A Clockwork Orange. Not much action-packed, but wildly adventurous. I don't normally like such movies "on steroids", but this was huge. Grandiose, bombastic, whilst also very intriguing. 9/10

Deathwatch (UK/Germany - 2002): A very strange WWI film. Not for everyone though. I hereby declare that 2002 is the most spellbindingly bizarre year for me, concerning entertainment. 8/10

Livide (France - 2011): The worst witch movie I've ever seen. I'm conniving to bitch-slap whoever did this. Even my arse can conjure up better work o' farts. 1/10

Viy (Soviet Union - 1967): I had watched the 2014 version (also named as Forbidden Empire) of this Gogol adaptation long ago. The strongest asset of both the movies is their striking visuals. (The 2014 version is not directly an adaptation though.) I liked this one (1967) a lot better. The night creatures were incredible. 9/10

the Old Ways (2020) Directed by Christopher Alender

I was thinking recently that of all the world's accents, the least conducive to conveying terror and dread might just be Mexican. Can you imagine the Exorcist with Father Merrin and Father Karras portrayed by Cheech and Chong respectively invoking the same intended gravitas?. Picture my delight therefore at discovering a contemporary exorcism film that takes place in Veracruz, Mehiko. Rest easy Gringos, as any unwitting humour is absent entirely and the economy of the dialogue throughout is probably deliberate. Although the Old Ways doesn't bring anything new to the table genre wise, it does have a back story depth that very few even attempt. Kudos are due therefore to Director Christopher Alender's subtle and understated handling of his theme which posits the spiritual and moral anomie prevalent in the first world is fertile ground for all manner of psychological maladies to thrive. (real or imagined, with demonic possession being just one manifestation of this) Our heroine Cristina is a high achiever US emigrant journalist who lives in a state of heroin injected spiritual perdition c/f her cousin Miranda, who remained in Veracruz, is infinitely more naive but considerably wiser in the ancient brujeria wisdom from which the movie is clearly inspired. Perhaps the denouement might be considered a tad predictable but it shouldn't spoil your enjoyment of what is a very accomplished horror which manages to weave in a moral fable in a place where we would have least expected one.

OtherLife (Australia/UAE - 2017): As uninteresting as Inception... till the ending part; which was surprisingly great. I was gonna rate with a 4/10, but now it is 6/10.

Watched Tenet........good action and fast paced with decent acting  but for me the plot of the going backwards in time thing while others were going normal in time confused me. It just wasn't explained very well at times.

Close Your Eyes (UK - 2002): Planets & stars aligned, symbols & signs attuned! And the year 2002 unleashed another unique movie! Like a '70s movie tinged with the darkness of the '90s. Very good. 8/10
