Nicholas Nickleby (UK/US - 2002): Stunning cinematic experience, mesmerising film. The novelty of the year 2002 continues to amaze me. 9/10

Has anyone seen Dune yet, the new film by Denis Villeneuve? I quite like this director, but I'm very reluctant to go see this film. I'm not an unconditional science-fiction fan and I'm completely indifferent to everything that is fantasy - both in literature and in cinema (everything Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter like; it just doesn't interest me, and I think the Dune saga is part of this). The reviews I've read, generally very positive, only confirm my prejudice that this is not for me: great direction, decors, but actors trapped within a script that doesn't leave much leeway for the spectator... Any opinions?

^ I believe any Dune adaptation wouldn't interest you. I haven't seen it yet. I'll probably do it soon. Hope I'll like it.

So far Dune adaptations have largely been gorgeous failures. But I am interested in the current one just to see why some things are unfilmable, or if they pulled it off this time. |

Well it just seems the larger story, the whispering lady and the worms and Spice and on and on. Things that kinda only work in written form. Heck even the TV series was almost unwatchable. |

I want to only because it's Denis Villeneuve. Sicario , Arrival and Blade Runner 2049 were films I thoroughly enjoyed. Rotten Tomatoes gives it 91% although he has 3 other films that rate even higher than that!

The Thinning (2016 - US) - Good intentions don't save this elementary level Black Mirror travesty. The ending? Oh, they definitely tried a sequel to be wished. Cheap... 3/10

Close Your Eyes (UK - 2002): Planets & stars aligned, symbols & signs attuned! And the year 2002 unleashed another unique movie! Like a '70s movie tinged with the darkness of the '90s. Very good. 8/10

Watched Tenet........good action and fast paced with decent acting but for me the plot of the going backwards in time thing while others were going normal in time confused me. It just wasn't explained very well at times.
7/10

OtherLife (Australia/UAE - 2017): As uninteresting as Inception... till the ending part; which was surprisingly great. I was gonna rate with a 4/10, but now it is 6/10.

the Old Ways (2020) Directed by Christopher Alender I was thinking recently that of all the world's accents, the least conducive to conveying terror and dread might just be Mexican. Can you imagine the Exorcist with Father Merrin and Father Karras portrayed by Cheech and Chong respectively invoking the same intended gravitas?. Picture my delight therefore at discovering a contemporary exorcism film that takes place in Veracruz, Mehiko. Rest easy Gringos, as any unwitting humour is absent entirely and the economy of the dialogue throughout is probably deliberate. Although the Old Ways doesn't bring anything new to the table genre wise, it does have a back story depth that very few even attempt. Kudos are due therefore to Director Christopher Alender's subtle and understated handling of his theme which posits the spiritual and moral anomie prevalent in the first world is fertile ground for all manner of psychological maladies to thrive. (real or imagined, with demonic possession being just one manifestation of this) Our heroine Cristina is a high achiever US emigrant journalist who lives in a state of heroin injected spiritual perdition c/f her cousin Miranda, who remained in Veracruz, is infinitely more naive but considerably wiser in the ancient brujeria wisdom from which the movie is clearly inspired. Perhaps the denouement might be considered a tad predictable but it shouldn't spoil your enjoyment of what is a very accomplished horror which manages to weave in a moral fable in a place where we would have least expected one.

Viy (Soviet Union - 1967): I had watched the 2014 version (also named as Forbidden Empire) of this Gogol adaptation long ago. The strongest asset of both the movies is their striking visuals. (The 2014 version is not directly an adaptation though.) I liked this one (1967) a lot better. The night creatures were incredible. 9/10

Deathwatch (UK/Germany - 2002): A very strange WWI film. Not for everyone though. I hereby declare that 2002 is the most spellbindingly bizarre year for me, concerning entertainment. 8/10

Cypher (US - 2002): Like Xchange (2001) with a HUGE, actually MASSIVE upgrade. But flawed. I'll not mention that major flaw, to abstain from spoiling the fun. All I can say is that, the Americans should sometimes use "natural" events instead of "their" typical deus ex machinas, to save the "precious" protagonists. Like a heart attack of the bad guy in a climactic moment, passing out of him because of the tension etc. I mean, seriously... Sadly I'll not rate an American movie with 10/10, again. Yet, it is extremely entertaining and mind-boggling. To the extent that, it can be disturbing for some or most. Moderately original, too many references. They also purloined stuff from some earlier films such as The Matrix, The Truman Show, and A Clockwork Orange. Not much action-packed, but wildly adventurous. I don't normally like such movies "on steroids", but this was huge. Grandiose, bombastic, whilst also very intriguing. 9/10
