I guess something went wrong with the copying/pasting: My submission is called Frutería Toñi - El traspié. This is overall a very fine selection of music!

The playlist. 19 tracks at nearly 3 hours. You know it's a proggy poll.

My votes (Familha) Artús - Faust A major part of this track as a strong Balkan feel because of the melodic line. At first hearing thought that the lyrics were Romanian, but a closer look revealed that this is more likely be some Occitan dialect. The major part is rather folkish. My favourite within this selection. The Mercury Tree - Disremembered Very strange indeed. And rather dissonant. Something like a Kayo Dot-based blend with a touch of Gentle Giant. An interesting and worthy contribution. Advent - Ramblin' Sailor Despite its title, this track is an epic rather than a shanty. The vocals and medieval/Renaissance sections make Advent the XXI-st century counterpart of Gentle Giant west of the pool. I realized that I had heard them before: this was when I compiled my contribution to the 2015 AotY list and I put Silent Sentinel at #18. With 76 ratings, this album falls somewhat outside the criteria, but I am happy to be reminded of this band's existence ... and I am curious about what 2024 will bring. Honourable Mentions Fruteria Toñi - El Traspié Fresh sounding and rather uplifting music with violin and clarinet. Somehow this track sounds like RPI to me, with touches of jazz and klezmer. Francis Lickerish - Brides of the Wind A crossover between Symphonic Prog and (very) English classical music. Sometimes a bit over the top, but some passages belong to the best of this poll's selection. Charlie Cawood feat. Marjana Semkina - Flicker Out of Being Aetherial and strongly reminiscent of Kate Bush. Louis de Mieulle - Discoteak A first half in 5/4 followed by changing time signatures and synth passages. Other worthy listens William Sheller - Hare Krishna Nice combi of classic choir and Floydish elements. I prefer this make of the mahamantra over the chants of those guys with bells in orange tunics that impeded the traffic in the center of Amsterdam back in the 1970's. Claudio Rocchi - Volo Magico N. 1 My introduction to Folk Acido Italiano. From 1971, as it should be. Somewhat stretched and trippy, but well composed with the acoustic start, electric instruments joining in and a quiet piano ending after the crescendo. A pleasant listen. Experimental Quartet - Spre Universe An obscurity from Romania from 1978, not to be found on the internet except for handful of YouTube vids. Might be related to Experimental Quintet, which is filed under Eclectic Prog. This track has a strong 1969/1970 feel with nice organ work. Duncan Mackay - Jigaloda Keyboard-oriented instrumental. Rather melodic. .O.rang - Mind on Pleasure A rather percussion-oriented piece. Good, but not the kind of thing I listen to to put my mind on pleasure. Oségen Ensemble - Think Neither Good Nor Evil A nice listen of Heavy Prog, getting better as the track proceeds. Snakefinger - The Picture Makers vs. The Children of the Sea Nice contrast between the screaming guitar and the minimalistic accordeon. Jonesy - Ricochet Sounds like 70's classic rock with a soulful vocal rendition. The marching band at the end of the song gives me the impression of a concept album closer. Amorphous Androgynous - The world is full of plankton A dreamy psych track. Mirage - For Andy Camel leaning towards Canterbury. Roy Harper - 1948ish Actually 1984ish. I think this one is more about the lyrics, which have not lost their actuality after 36 years. Edited by someone_else - October 03 2021 at 08:39 |

Looks great! I'll see if I can make time to listen to the whole playlist either tomorrow or the day after.
Just for the record, this song (as well as the one immediately succeeding it) is quite an outlier on the album on which it's featured. I would describe the rest of it as following closely in the style of the first Muffins album.

My Top Three and other considerations.
First of all, thank you all so much for so much fine music! It's obvious that progressive music brought us here, as this was one of the most difficult for me to make my decisions. Special thanks to Lorenzo, as always, for the origins of this type of poll and to George for the playlists. You all brought wonderful music, most of which was flying under my radar and I thank you all for that. The Top Three:
1. 1. richardh: I loved this so much, I bought both of his solo works available at Bandcamp. Francis Lickerish “Brides of the Wind” Stately at the start, definitely conjures up images of a procession. Tension builds and the feeling becomes a trifle ominous. Very orchestral, with soaring lead guitar and swirling strings. Drums and full band kick in, lush and regal, this. A Celtic feel to the piece, now. Angelic female vocals enter the procession, with a lead and also chorus. Very mystical, and good chills here. Exquisite. Soft horns add to the majesty. Electric guitars come along to the fore, sounds like such a lovely visual could accompany this, as in a film. A heavier feel comes along, still in a marching sort of mode, maybe this is where the knights and archers march along. It all rolls back for a bit with flutes and horns, another exalted portion, swelling and rising, gradually. Another quiet section emerges, with deep horns keeping the beat and electric guitar, that, after strings punctuate the piece, becomes very pointed and the angels return. Gosh, just gorgeous. 14 minutes flew by. Ends with a grand flourish. 2. tigerfeet: I liked this one over #3, but they did fight a little with each other. Also, your other potential choice would have been a contender, and been in this spot as well. Amorphous Androgynous “The world is full of plankton” Gotta love a song with that title! 😊 Whirlies and synth start this one out. Nice electric lead emerges with skirrrrrrs and some wongly keys. Liking the underwater feel, indeed there may be some ocean/bird sounds in there. Flutes come along and a couple of harder edged guitar chords, mixed back. Indeed the watery effect continues as the vocals come in, very psych feel to this. Dreamy feeling of drowning to it, fine, fine stuff! The music whirdles out and morning birds enter, with the vocals coming back in and the washy sound continues and the song ends. ALSO IF YOU’D CHOSEN: Assemble Head in Sunburst Sound “The Slumbering Ones," would have vied to be in the Top 3 3. someone_else: This one made the Top 3, as I love delicacy, long and slow building, atmospheric pieces of music. Alejandro Matos “El Infierno de los Buenos” Lone electric piano and a male singer, singing in Spanish opens the piece. Electric guitar joins in, slowly building the musical tension. 3 ½ minutes in, drums are added, fairly far back in a marching beat. Synths and bass layer in at about 5 minutes. I quite enjoy the slow build and pacing of this, he is obviously patient with his presentation, which I find refreshing. Now electric guitar is back, in a very impassioned, yet also precisely measured way. Now, heavy keyboards are creating a very marching sort of feel, with a lovely embellishment from the electric guitar. A bit of an instrumental break with organ and washing synths, creating an almost mystical atmosphere. He sings here in a different kind of voice, sort of almost like a dark whispery (without actually whispering, if that makes any sense), there is more of a feeling of malevolence here. The synths come back to the fore, as the sense of foreboding is heightened. Now down to just spare acoustic piano notes, with bass and drums way back. The piano conveys a sense of madness, to my mind, as it is sinister and a bit discordant. Heavy electric guitar comes back. The vocal feels as if the singer is coming to terms with how far he’s come on this journey. The song slows after the crescendo, with organ swells slowly fading. Honourable Mentions: progaardvark: Artús “Faust” This one warred with the Matos piece for third place for me. I went for the more classical over the more ethnic this time. Greg: William Sheller “Hare Krishna," ALSO IF YOU’D CHOSEN: Perry Leopold “The Journey, things might have played out differently for me. Lorenzo: Claudio Rocchi “Volo Magico N. 1” Christian: .O.rang “Mind on Pleasure” ALSO IF YOU’D CHOSEN: Tristeza “Halo Heads” , things might have played out differently for me. George: Onségen Ensemble “Think Neither Good Nor Evil” Mirakaze: Louis De Mieulle “Discoteak” Kees: Frutería Toñi “ traspié” ALSO IF YOU’D CHOSEN: Stephan Thelen “Road Movie” , things might have played out differently for me. Ronstein: Advent “Ramblin’ Sailor” Moshkito: Roy Harper “Nineteen Forty-Eightish” dr wu23: Jonesy “Ricochet” If They'd Chosen Differently, would have potentially been in different contention: Cristi: Bucium - Frunză verde foi mărunte - cu Dora Gaitanovici (Miorița) Mike: Fovea Hex “Every Evening” I prophesy disaster: Daddy Cool “Make Your Stash” JD and SuperMetro: Both of you made great contributions, those just didn't quite hit the same chords with me. 1. |

I adore Perry Leopold's The Journey, and is from one of my very favourite albums in PA. This is a time that I lacked confidence in my pick and suggestion. I often do go with the first thing to spring to mind as my nomination (a matter of a second or two if I get what the poll is about and this times lots came to mind -- guess I am a prog fan after all) I agree with Kees that that William Sheller, Hare Krishna off, Lux Aeterna works better in the context of the album (had read he composed the album for a friend's wedding, ad various different religious themes come into play). I love the album. In PA I tend to most compare it to Jean-Claude Vannier's L'enfant assassin des mouches (which also came to mind immediately, but I haven't mentioned it so much in the forum over my years here).
I liked/loved everything listed, and choosing just three seems a ridiculous task. I tried to review ones before, but didn't post that as I lack confidence in my approach and in the results, so I figured it wouldn't be appreciated by others any more than it was by me. Many thanks to those who took the time and put their impressions out there. I will vote for: Frutería Toñi - El traspié .O.rang “Mind on Pleasure” Experimental Quartet “Spre univers” Worthy contenders = everything else. Awesome music all around methinks.

As said before, this was a very good listening experience, once again - great selections overall! As often happens, it is not easy to decide on just three to vote for. After listening, I came to a shortlist of five contenders: - Claudio Rocchi “Volo Magico N. 1” - .O.rang “Mind on Pleasure” - Charlie Cawood. "Flicker Out Of Being," ft Marjana Semkina - Onségen Ensemble “Think Neither Good Nor Evil” - Alejandro Matos “El Infierno de los Buenos” Of one, it was immediately clear for me it should be on the podium, so my first vote goes to Claudio Rocchi. For the other two it is rather arbitrary and it could be different, but I give my two other votes to the Onségen Ensemble and Alejandro Matos. Will explore more of all of them. Today I also listened to two albums by bands the were suggested in this thread but were not nominated (they would both have been on my podium...): Bucium's Miorița and Yôkaï (s/t). Both two are splendid albums; thanks for leading me to these gems! Edited by suitkees - October 03 2021 at 13:08 |

My podium:
GOLD MEDAL 1) Artùs "Faust" SILVER MEDAL 2) The Mercury Tree “Disremembered” It was not easy choosing the bronze medal. There were three contenders: * O,Rang **Charlie Cawood. "Flicker Out Of Being," ft Marjana Semkina *** Frutería Toñi - El traspié (great mini suite with a fantastic melody and arrangament) I have chosen the most particular song, with an atmosphere far from typical prog: BRONZE MEDAL 3) Charlie Cawood. "Flicker Out Of Being," ft Marjana Semkina -------- Fruteria Toni take the GRAND CRTIC'S PRIZE Experimental Quartet “Spre univers” take the GRAND PUBLIC'S PRIZE ------- HONORABLE MENTIONS: 4) O. Rang 5) Advent (Reinassance suite with the Gentle Gian round the corner) 6) Jonesy “Ricochet” (very enjoyable funky!) Edited by jamesbaldwin - October 03 2021 at 16:10 |

1. Louis de Mieulle - Discoteak 2. Frutería Toñi - El traspié 3. Onségen Ensemble - Think Neither Good Nor Evil Bubbling under... 4. William Sheller - Hare Krishna 5. Odin - Life Is Only 6. Thanks to everyone. I really each one. I settled on my first two votes, but there was a fierce battle for the third. My votes go to:
1. Claudio Rocchi - Volo Magico N.1 2. Louis de Mieulle - Discoteak 3. Roy Harper - Nineteen Eighty-Fourish There were a few tracks I knew beforehand. Of those, .O.Rang would have made number 3. I will give honorable mention to everyone else. Well done. And another vote to t Thanks. Edit to add: A couple of artists that were suggested but not finals that I enjoyed are Bucium and Assemblehead in Sunburst Sound. Edited by mathman0806 - October 05 2021 at 06:25 |
