Yup. Simple as that.
I'll go wtih Brad Pitt, who is among my favourite actors. Yet this doesn't mean that I don't also like Johnny Depp. Who is your pick? |

Though Depp has fallen from grace and become somewhat bizarre, you can't tell me he wasn't one of the great actors of his time. Pitt's okay but I haven't seen him do anything outside his comfort zone. Edited by Atavachron - September 30 2021 at 19:10 |

Both are very layerd actors and excellent metamorphical actors, they are able to change their 'skin' on demand for the role. Both can go from the fantastical to realistic, frantic and dozile both have the Dean/Brando ability to take a scene juat for their presence. But my favorite role ever is Jack Sparrow, that role transformation is a piece of art and a school in cemdic timiing. Depp wins for also have a wider pallet, that he is also a natural comedian also.

I think Depp generally played contemplative characters, whereas Pitt acted rather manic depressively. Pitt is just "okay"? I don't see any other Hollywood actor handling his roles in 12 Monkeys or Snatch. |

No, Brad Pitt is a very good actor, but his acting is very much within the mainstream Hollywood conventions. Also in 12 Monkeys he could be replaced with a couple of other good Hollywood actors and it wouldn't change the quality of the film. It is just that he is more bankable than the others (which hasn't necessarily have to do with talent/acting skills). But again, he's very good in what he does, between comedy (e.g. Read After Burning), the stupid American (Inglorious b*****ds), action (the Ocean Eleven films, a.o.), or more serious roles (e.g. Benjamin Button)... A great Hollywood actor. Johnny Depp, however, has shown much more versatility in his acting and roles they gave to him, be it by Jim Jarmush or by Tim Burton or by others still. He moves much less within those Hollywood conventions, imho. So, I'll go with Depp.

Oh?.. Anyway, I cannot disagree more. Pitt's crazy role in 12 Monkeys is UNMATCHED. So is his gypsy role in Snatch. I think Depp is the less versatile actor. Actually his works with Burton are like copycats of one another... I like Depp in Secret Window a lot, but other than that, he was just okay for me. |

^ Then we agree to disagree (and I think you haven't really assessed Depp's quite different roles in Burton's films...).

^ I've watched nearly all of them. The make-up artist(s) should have been more money for their work in them.

I'd have to agree Pitt's performance in 12Ms is unsubtle and superficial. He improved over time and is better when he plays against type like in The Big Short or Moneyball. |

What you probably see as "subtle" in Depp's acting is actually related to his "mysterious" personality, which can even be sensed in his regular photos. So subtlety in his acting is not an achievement for him.
Yes, I can tell you, and already more than hinted that, previously. We don't have to agree though. I was always saying that there's a problem in Robert De Niro's acting, since my adolescence, but I didn't possess the terminology to put it into words. Then, during my M.A. education, my American professor teacher who was a drama and Italian neorealism expert, stated that De Niro is very focused and convincing, but always acts with his ego. I was happy that I was not wrong in my take on him. He "wears" the roles like shirts, and you always watch a De Niro in a different outfit. On the other hand, Al Pacino can "convince" that he is a Jewish merchant, the devil etc. That's what I call incredible acting. Back on topic, I always see a contemplative and mysterious Depp, in differnt roles (and with different make-ups, lol). I'm not trying to liken his acting to De Niro's, only drawing a parallel from my perspective. Pitt, conversely, really convinces that he is a freak in 12 Monkeys, or an Irish gypsy in Snatch. We certainly can disagree about Depp vs. Pitt but when it comes to DeNiro & Pacino, that's a different argument. If we look at more than those actor's famous roles, like say DeNiro as the monster in Frankenstein, the boxer in Raging Bull, moron in King of Comedy, patient in Awakenings, crazy Louis Gara in Jackie Brown and on and on. Pacino has had some great moments but not compared to that legacy, especially as the years have worn on. Edited by Atavachron - October 02 2021 at 04:48 |

^ Well, I haven't wathced most of those movies. But my very old teacher probably watched them and assessed him that way with also considering those films.

Hi,
I'm not sure if anything I say is gonna matter. I think that both actors go for the Hollywood Sidewalk Hall of names rather than the actual acting. In many ways, I think that they both are not great actors, and are simply a great name to have on the marquee that will sell a lot of tickets for the new show! If one of them was not "known", I think this poll would be so one sided as to be sad. But right now, we've created something that I'm not sure can be described or defined as "their talent" , instead of their fame! I think BP has done a lot more difficult material than JD ... but you can easily say that watching him as a pirate was a lot of fun ... but is that all that acting is about?

I'm making a Pitt-stop to plump for Brad instead of plumbing the Deppths for Johnny.

I like the enclosed sphere of the Hollywood. At least, there are stuff inside it that I like. So, I'm not in the "Hollywood is wholly crap" camp; but, to an extent, I agree with that notion. I just can enjoy stuff, irregardless of where they come from. Entertainment is entertainment for me. I can feed and enrich my intellect from other things too. So, watching intelligent films doesn't necessarily make a person intellectual or cultured, and vice versa. "Temporary suspension of disbelief" is great and makes the life worth living for.
In literature, it is the same. I can enjoy great classics, sophisticated and deeply intellectual & stylistic literature; but I also enjoy fantasy books, most of wich tremendously or even almost totally lack that which is called literariness. Sometimes being adventurous, amusing etc. is enough for me to enjoy cultural products. |

Different kinds of crazy roles, but I think another Brad, Brad Dourif, was much more compelling in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest than Brad Pitt in 12 Monkeys.

Not comparable, for me. The movie and Dourif's acting in that were spectacular, but Pitt's character is much different. You, as a person that worked with the mentally ill, should know that they (the lunatics) have their peculiar and drastic differences in their personalities. To be more explicit, Dourif's character is more of an "ill" type of the mentally unstable, whereas Brad Pitt's is more of a lunatic sort. Edited by Shadowyzard - October 02 2021 at 08:27 |

Brad Pitt's wild Traveller accent in Snatch is reason enough to vote for him. Hilarious movie and great part for Pitt.

For me everything is comparable in one sense at least, but I know what you mean. It's the Brady-y Bunch, part of the Brad pack one might say. Indeed, I agree and well said, which is why I call them different. Actually, I wouldn't even call Dourif "crazy' in the role, but rather having a mental illness; whereas, Brad Pitt's role in 12 Monkeys is more having a crazy mental illness (a fun crazy compared to Dourif's moe pitiable character). Pitt's is more the over-the-top lunatic character. Brad Dourif's kind of eccentric crazy in Alien Resurrection might be closer to Pitt's role in the other as it is more fun. He's very good at eccentric. It might be insensitive but a people acting kind of crazy or having mental illnesses in films would be an interesting topic for me. I'd like to do Jack Nicholson in the Shining, although he was having fun in that, whereas Shelly Duvall as Wendy was going through a nervous breakdown in real life. I rather think Nicholson pretending to be crazy in Cuckoo's Nest came closer to Pitt's. My problem with Pitt in 12 Moneys is that I never bought into the performance and I think that's a reason why that was never one of my favourite Gilliam films (much prefer Brazil and Time Bandits for instance). My favourite Pitt roles are in the Tarantino films. My favourite Depp film is The Ninth Gate. An issue I have with Depp again is that I often am too aware that he is acting. I find it hard to suspend my disbelief. And I just want to mention Peter Weller just because. John Lithgow is another that can do crazy well/
