^The Mrs and I finished that one about a month ago and really enjoyed it. Now we're on season 8 of MI5 (Spooks). The action never lets up and they change cast as often as they can. Never get too attached when you work for domestic counter intelligence.

we just watched the first 2 (or rather 4; I'll explain) episodes of "Bodyguard", a 6-part British political thriller from 2018. David Budd (played by Richard Madden), a British Army war veteran suffering from PTSD, who is now working for the Royalty and Specialist Protection Branch of London's Metropolitan Police Service who is divorced with two kids who live with their mum, foils a terrorist bomb attack on a train and is assigned as the principal protection officer (PPO) for the ambitious female home secretary of the UK, whose politics he despises. she is pushing a planned new law called RIPA 18, an extension of the RIPA (Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act) from 2000 which would give the police access to private data of citizens. the two have an affair. a first attempted sniper assassination of her fails, a second attempt with a bomb is successful though. Budd tries to keep their affair secret and becomes suspicious because of this. BBC One made this a 6 part series; German TV joined 2 of these episodes respectively, so the series became a 3 part one for German TV. the series received numerous awards and was nominated for a Golden Globe as best television series in the category drama. Madden received a Golden Globe as best actor in a television series in the category drama. we watched the first 2 episodes at the online channel of ZDF (a German TV channel); episode 3 is not available yet. the series is top notch! oh, and on a side note: the name of the female home secretary is, believe it or not, Julia Montague, a combination of Julia Capulet and Romeo Montague from Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet"

Just finished Midnight Mass. If you want a deep thinking, slow boiling, excellently acted and scary-as-hell series to watch for this Halloween season, this is THE one to watch. The actors are many of the same cast as The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor and it was created and directed by Mike Flanagan, same as The Haunting mini-series.
I'm not going to tell you much about it, other than the build up is slow at first, but the character development is excellent. There are scenes throughout that will stick with you for a long time. And there are so many messages here plus a lot of homage to Stephen King, Anne Rice and others. This is one of the best horror series I have watched recently and it will not only frighten you, but it will make you think and even pull at the heartstrings. There is a lot of talking, but I never got bored with the dialogue as everything seemed to pertain to the big picture. It's almost perfect. 9.5/10 Also finished Nine Perfect Strangers and thought it was pretty good. Yes, it's a bit odd, but that makes it interesting. The acting is pretty good as there are a lot of big names here. I thought the story lines tended to get a bit lost sometimes though. 7/10

Pennyworth (Season 2) 2021
I probably didn't enjoy as much as most but it was okay. Too much stylistic mish mash of different era's of recent British history for my taste and I found the storyline charting a fictional rise in fascism not convincing and even a little contrived. On the plus side, singer/actor Paloma Faith is a hoot playing a deranged northern psycho 'b***h' while James Purefoy added much needed tension and threat. 7/10

We just finished watching the sixth and last episode of "One Lane Bridge", a crime series from New Zealand. In a way it was the New Zealand version of "Twin Peaks". Detective Ariki Davis is a Maori cop who just moved to Queenstown. He has matakite, a Maori word for "second sight". The bridge mentioned in the title is kind of jinxed; many murders or suicides took place there. A man either fell or was pushed from that bridge, and the police have to find out what happened. And he has these strange visions of lots of dead people around or on the bridge. Very interesting with a surprise ending. The series was from 2020, and it looks as if there is a second season. But it wasn't shown in Germany yet. |

If something passes the time and doesn't annoy me then it often gets 7/10. Roughly I tend to see it like this: 5/10 and below not really worth bothering with 6/10 watchable and has decent production standards 7/10 very entertaining , high production standards but not especially original 8/10 one of the more interesting things to come out this year 9/10 top notch , interesting, original and a little challenging 10/10 very rare indeed . Has to be perfect. Maybe Boardwalk Empire , Six Feet Under fall into that category but not a lot else in my book!

^ That's a generous review. Maybe I was a bit harsh - the Grape throwing scene was pretty hilarious and Melissa McCarthy was surprisingly good. I just felt a bit let down by the whole thing.
Now on to my wife's choice: Season 2 of Fort Salem. It's not great but has a nice charm about it.

Still watching Brand New Cherry Flavor (thoroughly enjoying) and like you I less enjoyed Nine Perfect Strangers . I guess my main issue is Nicole Kidman's face which is now far too distracting. Shame as she is a fine actor but there is a limit on the ole nip and tuck. I really loved the dynamic between Melissa McCarthy's and Bobby Cannavale's characters but less convinced by the family. Overall it was entertaining and a few caustically ironic things to say about 'New Age' therapy although seemed in the end to totally pull its punches and chicken out of the dark ending expected. Perhaps it would have been a bit too grim to stomach?! 7/10

My "safe" rating is 3/10 too, to the bad movies/series where acting is good. |

Finished this the other week. I rather enjoyed it as it's a bit out there. Unlike Nine Perfect Strangers which I finished a few days ago. I thought it might have had a science-fiction or supernatural twist, but alas no. It's simply 9 people with various problems being drugged at a health resort; and that's about it. 3/10 as the acting was quite good.

We just watched the sixth episode of the German crime series "Sarah Kohr". She is a special police agent, a weapons and martial arts expert and always works alone. In this episode she had to stop a terrorist attack with the nerve gas Sarin. Lisa Maria Potthoff who plays the lead is a woman in her early 40s and in top shape. She does all the stunts herself (and there were quite a lot of them in this episode), including the martial arts fights. Each episode has full movie length. The first one aired in 2014 when Potthoff was in her mid-30s and was originally meant as a stand-alone TV-movie. But it was so successful that a series was made of it. The second episode aired in 2018, and there is about one episode per year. Definitely one of the best German crime series. Here is a trailer for this episode: And here an image from one of her stunts in that movie: ![]() Edited by BaldFriede - September 26 2021 at 19:58 |

just started watching Brand New Cherry Flavor , a limited series recently put up on Netflix. Very interesting with a bit of a David Lynch vibe going on. I will probably binge that over the weekend.

Yeah well remember Fringe. First time I remember seeing the actor Jared Harris , now very famous for Chernobyl and was equally good in The Terror. Soon to be seen in the main role in the Apple TV+ sci-fi series Foundation based on the Isaac Asimov book series of the same name. Could be the biggest TV event for a while. If you are wondering whether to get an Apple TV+ subscription then I can highly recommend all the following:
See The Morning Show For All Mankind The Servant Trying Mythic Quest some very nice diverse programming and well worth the £4.99 (UK) a month although I do expect it will go up.

The Triangle (UK/US - 2005): Now this is what I call good entertainment. The 2nd episode of this 3 part TV mini-series was a little boring, but it can be overlooked. 8/10

My interest and love of K-dramas has pretty much blossomed into an obsession at this point
![]() The one I've been watching these days is Reply 1988, from 2016. (Not to be confused with Reply 1997 or Reply 1994. Each series is a stand-alone season with completely different characters. Reply 1988's considered the best one.) It's a slice-of-life dramedy full of quirky characters. Having grown up in the 80s, this one makes me much more nostalgic for that time period than, say, Stranger Things. I rate Reply 1988 with my other top-tier favorites - Mr. Queen, Strong Girl Bong-soon, Crash Landing On You, Mr Sunshine, Goblin (aka Guardian: The Lonely and Great God), When the Camellia Blooms, My Mister, Hotel Del Luna. I think they can all be found at Viki.com.

The North Water 2021 (5 episode min series)
Based on a book by Ian McGuire , this is yet another quality BBC production set at sea involving a 19th century sailing vessel (also check out The Terror) and starring an impressive cast including Colin Farrell , Stephen Graham and Jack O'Connell. I enjoyed the characters and the story which develops very nicely and leads to a satisfying conclusion. Superb Arctic photography as well that seems more important than ever in this age of climate change. 8/10 |

Barbarians - Set in AD9 about the Roman invasion of Germany. In German and, impressively, classic latin. Only 6 episodes and no too bad. Not as enjoyable as Britannia or Vikings, but a decent effort. 6.5/10
