I would say single factor is mostly for completionists. As a prog album it fails on most accounts, ofcourse, but as a pop album I've heard much worse and it's actually not that bad if you have the right mind set. It's certainly not an album for progsnobs though. I would also add "no easy answer" which I think is a good opener and probably just as good as "city life" from the previous album.

Yup, Breathless/I can see your house from here are extremely poppy. But it was only because of pressure from the record label. They formed they're own record label in 1991 so they wouldn't have to deal with that. So try Dust and Dreams, or if you want something earlier that's still progressive I would suggest Nude. Now obviously nothing beats Moonmadness/The Snow Goose, but you can still find those progressive elements in they're later albums. (Once again, Dust and Dreams, Harbour of Tears, etc.)

The nice thing about "No Easy Answer" and "City Life" is they're both tremendously catchy tunes with a memorable melody that I can hear playing in my head, but I couldn't say that about any of the songs on the Moonmadness album, even though it's my favourite Camel album by far.

By the way, Today's Goodbye off Single Factor is, by Camel's standards, pretty pukey. Nice harmonies can't save it.

I happen to really like "You are the One". The verses are like "Lies", great bluesy feel with some searing guitar, and the chorus is a jarring shift that I came to enjoy. In fact, my college friends had to listen to me humming the little bridge between the verse and chorus followed by singing the chorus...then they were over and the song was on and they cracked up! They said it was much better than I had made it sound

^ Or the newer Kaipa Do Capo, I think that's actually the one I have enjoyed the most (even if it's not exactly a proper Kaipa album).

Asia Minor's album from 1980 is often mentioned in the same breath as Camel. Melodic, mellow at times, but also a bit more hectic and jazzy than Camel's "golden era".

Hi,
I was thinking that most of us run out of money before being able to get all the stuff we want/need from CAMEL. I think I have somewhere along 12/13 albums, and NUDE is one of my favorites, and I got into the band via the "import" of the 2nd album that I bought because of the cover which was changed in the American release.

I think Breathless actually sounds pretty good, because the pop tracks sound more interesting. I am listening to it right now and I think that the Canterbury sound makes the album interesting. I like Richard Sinclair's vocals, with my favorite performance being the penultimate part from Nine Feet Underground by Caravan. Something that Breathless has and not ICSYHFH is that it has more of the upbeatness, while still being sort of like Camel.

Although the lyrics in Breathless is pretty crappy, it is still a pretty good record due to the instrumentation. Camel's weak point is the lyrics however, I think their words are about to unfold with their music rather than their voices. Summer Lightning reminds me a bit of Winter Wine, my favorite side A track on In The Land of Grey and Pink.

I like all of the Camels albums through Nude, though Breathless has some annoying parts to it.
The later albums have shorter songs, but Andrew Latimer and Andy Ward are still providing the foundation. Skip over tracks if you need to, but don't miss out the goods still mixed in. Open your mind. Still good stuff there.

Bump - I have now heard the first 7 albums at least once. Everything was good except ICSYHFH. However, all of them had a great song on there. First album had Never Let Go, Mirage had all the tracks with "Lady Fantasy" being the obvious masterpiece for the group, Snow Goose was a great idea for music with my favorite part being either the Rhayader or Dunkirk parts, Moonmadness had a ton of tracks, but my mood foes for Another Night, Rain Dances, perhaps Uneven Song or one of the 5 instrumentals! My favorite track on Breathless is The Sleeper, and ICSYHFH is obviously Ice.

Nude and Stationary Traveller also deserve to be heard IMHO. I find them both excellent.

Looking back, Camel was my entry point to all the Canterbury stuff, via the R Sinclair connection.
