According to https://musicenthusiasts.wordpress.com/, it is. At any rate, it's a fine distinction that doesn't really matter. Edited by I prophesy disaster - September 12 2021 at 11:16 |

No, I know how to behave in the restaurant now, I don't tear at the meat with my hands. If I've become a man of the world somehow, that's not necessarily to say I'm a worldly man.

Since I didn't see anything in the OP that says where the "Genre List" comes from I assume it leaves it up to personal interpretation. So... H - Hillbilly Rock Edited by JD - September 12 2021 at 11:32 |

I never thought of anything like this, just saying some of the users here come up with genres that don't exist. I guess I'm taking this thread way too seriously. There are plenty of music genres out there, why not post songs from existing ones...

I would say it's more of a category than a genre.

^^They exist ONLY because someone made it up ! Until Prog Rock was labeled Prog Rock, there was no Prog Rock. So the whole genre thing is an abstract concept at best. Let the masses speak.

Common knowledge??? Really? I would defy you to find 10 regular people on the street that could name even 5 of the 'genres' listed on PA. If asked, their top ten would probably be something like... Rock Country Jazz Classical Disco Pop Opera Dance/Electronic/Techno Religious/Church/Gospel Punk

People on the street not knowing what prog genres are is no excuse to invent names. Sorry that it bothers me. It's common knowledge here on our forum. If I say Symphonic prog, everyone knows what it means. Simple as that.

PA people invented the genres Eclectic Prog and Crossover Prog to my knowledge, and maybe Heavy Prog (well one could say adapted) -- I used to argue that they are not true genres, just categories especially when it came to Eclectic Prog since I was on that team early on after it split from Art Rock (now Art Rock I consider to be a "true" genre) Terms do come into common usage and others don't but still get used by someone. While I had not intended this to become a Just For Fun type topic and was interested in discovering some new genres and a lot of music from different genres, while there is no reason not to mention "true" genres again and again, I personally don't mind being lenient when it comes to using music descriptors for genres (especially as this repeats more and more through the alphabet, assuming it will go around more), being a little creative, and using unusual classifications. It is amazing how many terms individuals will use to classify music, sometimes rightly, sometimes wrongly, sometimes creatively. Language is ever evolving.
I remember someone once telling me that a word I used is not a real word, and I said, sure it is, I just coined it, it's a freshly minted word. Maybe I could change this to an A to Z of Music Labels and Genres to include more descriptive terms, but part of the fun is the challenge to me, and I could see this getting too dominantly silly. I want this to be fun, but also I do want it to be informative. Tough to get the right balance that pleases enough. Anyway, I'll do I I is for Indietronica Stereolab - Ticker-tape of the Unconscious |

Here is a genre list I found on the internet, I'm sure it's one of many. I bet there is no one here that could say they have heard of them all.
Stop fighting and just have fun already. No one person is right except for in his/her own minds and/or imaginations. "J" for J-punk (Yes, it's on the list - sorry I was posting this the same time JD posted a "J".) Edited by TCat - September 12 2021 at 14:19 |

I meant "commonly known". Or at least if you google it, you get an explanation, what it is.

Now we know where to look if we can't come up with any genres for the next letter in the alphabet.
