Something similar to:
"Down Down" by Cressida
"Nights in White Satin" by The Moody Blues
"A Whiter Shade of Pale" by Procol Harum
"After the Day" by Barclay James Harvest
"Spirit of the Water" by Camel
"Magic Man" by Caravan (this one is the perfect reference point)
"Forever" by Strawbs

I will be immensely grateful for the help of your wonderful community!

When I saw this topic title, the first I thought of was Nick Drake's "River Man" and "Fruit Tree", but in looking at the choices, especially Nights in White Satin, it made me think of King Crimson's "I Talk to the Wind".

That said, there is a good chance you know that one already. ;)

Welcome to the forum.

Edit. Again a well known band in Prog circles, but another that might push some of those buttons is VDGG's House with No Door.

Barclay James Harvest - "Suicide" .... My favourite BJH song, which is surprising considering I don't normally like depressing songs, although it does have an uplifting melody.  Smile

The above ones are great... I would recommend many of the songs on any early Moody Blues lp.
They even called this one Melancholy Man  ;)

These are so wonderful:
Van Der Graaf Generator - My Room (Waiting For Wonderland)
The Moody Blues - My Song
Nick Drake - River man
Nico - Janitor of Lunacy - this one is not only sad, it's quite intense too
Al Stewart - News from Spain

Sad songs are my favorite. I can't really listen to "happy music".
I love all the songs listed..

Carol of Harvest - Try A Little Bit
The Beatles - Julia
Curved Air - Dazed
Lily & Maria - There'll Be No Clown Tonight
Sandy Denny - Nothing More
Sandrose - Old Dom Is Dead

I find Dark Side of the Moon to be quite a solemn album, sans Money. Variably sad in parts.

A Pink Floyd song that I think might fit well with some of the initial list is A Pillow of Winds.

Pink FLoyd's "Fearless" is a favourite of mine.

I didn't think we were allowed to post whole albums on here.

Anyway, how about:

Refugees - Van Der Graaf Generator
Take A Pebble - ELP
I Talk To The Wind - King Crimson
Cadence And Cascade - "       "
Lady of Dancing Water    "      "
Lament -                         "      "
Think Of Me With Kindess - Gentle Giant
Memories Of Old Days -      "          "
Afterglow - Genesis
Turn Of the Century - Yes
Onward                      "

Also, I like Cat Stevens a lot but I don't really consider him to be sad (or prog either for that matter)

Technically not the Moody Blues, but the Justin Hayward song that appeared on the War of the Worlds album "forever autumn" might qualify also.

Practically every song on the Floyd studio albums from 'Saucerful of Secrets' through to 'The Wall'.  [PatGoD was dominated by Syd's whimsical songs so manages to be surprisingly upbeat for a Floyd album.]

Special mentions for: Grantchester Meadows, Julia Dream, Cirrus Minor.
"We're going to need a bigger swear jar."
