Cometh The Violet Hour, cometh the prog... The Violet Hour were a short-lived British band who released just one album - The Fire Sermon (1991) - before going their separate ways due to the age-old band problem of "artistic differences". They're listed on PA as a Neo Prog band, although sounding more like a Prog Folk band, with their main claim to fame having been the support band for Marillion on a couple of early 90's tours. The Violet Hour's singer, Doris Brendel, has been described as a cross between Janis Joplin & Bonnie Tyler, and according to some, the band may have created a whole new sub-genre of music, known as "Dream Prog". ![]() Dream of Me Track Listing 1. Dream Of Me (8:24) 2. The Spell (4:29) 3. By A River (3:20) 4. Could Have Been (5:54) 5. Offertory Song (5:28) 6. Falling (3:22) 7. Hold Me (4:15) 8. Ill Wind Blowin' (4:41) 9. The House (4:24) 10. Not quite. At the risk of being mocked again, I've given the album a 4-star rating this time.

Very pleasant lp....3.5 to 4 stars for me.....she has a great voice and would have liked to see where they would have gone next with another lp. Nice mix of neo and folk prog rock.
She has continued to do solo and other projects apparently. Most recent project...I quite like it......crossover prog..? |

Don't know this band and album at all, but when Psychedelic Paul is going to promote neo prog... Are you OK, Paul? ![]() Anyway, sounds interesting enough to explore. Thanks. |

The Fire Sermon doesn't sound like any Neo Prog album I've ever heard before, which is why I like it.

I have even seen this band live in their short existence when attending a Marillion gig. I remember I was not very impressed back in the day, but I really liked Dream of Me. To my ears they sounded remotely proggish, not like mainstream Neo-Prog. I noticed that the major part of the audience did appreciate the appearance of Doris.
Later on, when I heard some songs off The Fire Sermon, I got the feeling that I should have listened better. Doris Brendel recently turned up as backing vocalist on Fish's album Weltschmerz. |

Kudos to you for being one of the very few PA members to have actually seen The Violet Hour play live. It's probably one of the few occasions where the support band is better than the main act, although I realise I may be in a minority of one again in holding that view. ![]() Another track from The Fire Sermon album.....
