John Cassavetes - he probably inherited this from his mother who I think is the funniest woman on the screen.
Vincent Gallo for Buffalo 66' which is probably the most unique and funny movies I have ever seen. |

Woody Allen, mainly for "Sleeper", where our hero is cryogenically frozen in 1973 and is defrosted like a fish finger in 2173. The funniest moment was where Woody finds an abandoned 200-year-old Volkswagen Beetle half-submerged in a sea cave with the key still in the ignition. Out of curiosity, he turns the key and amazingly, the car starts first time. A great ad for the reliability of VW cars!

^ And largely true, the guys on Top Gear always had one following-up their cross country excursions. I'd say Shearer, Guest & McKean, with the inspirations of Rob Reiner and Eugene Levy, for their great mockumentaries, particularly A Mighty Wind, Waiting for Guffman and of course Spinal Tap. |

Carl Reiner has a pretty good track record. The Dick Van Dyke Show The Jerk All Of Me The Princess Bride As does Mel Brooks (mentioned above) I still think that Jim Carrey's Liar Liar is one of the funniest movies I've ever seen.

My picks would be (in no particular order): Joel and Ethan Coen Charlie Chaplin Pedro Almodovar Jacques Tati Tage Danielsson (Att angöra en brygga/Docking the Boat) Rob Reiner (Spinal Tap) Terry Jones (Life of Brian, Monty Python and the Holy Grail) They are not always ha-ha funny, the humour can be understated.

Good old Blake, one of the few Hollywood directors who found a way to make the kinds of movies he wanted to and still turn a profit. S.O.B. my favorite of his, but 10 and the Sellers Pink Panther flicks were great, not to mention Days of Wine & Roses and Breakfast at Tiffany's . |
