Rest easy, I wonder if this will be the end of the band. He was such a constant throughout the bands history, what a fulfilling life that must've been.

R.I.P.

Like many of his peers, f.e. Ringo, he was no virtuoso, but that's not necessarily what makes a great musician for me. His feeling was unique, and a crucial part of the band's sound. A virtuoso would have ruined their music.

My favourite moment might actually be his playing on Their Satanic Majesties Request.

At this point,

Paul and Ringo (vocals, bass and drums) could join Mick and Keith (vocals and guitar), two founders of the Beatles with two founders of the Rolling Stones, most obviously Ron Wood.

RIP, to not a virtuoso, but to a solid anchor in a rhythm section of a classic Blues Rock band.

I did wonder how bad his health was when I heard he wouldn't be touring with them. Now, sadly, it becomes very apparent.

He had already been replaced for the upcoming tour due to health problems.

This guy was the epitome of rock and roll drumming, of which, most of the bands from this site that we love wouldn't have even been inspired to pick up a pair of sticks and start jamming.

Virtuosity is absolutely irrelevant here; this guy was a legend.

RIP Charlie Watts, I'll be blasting Best of and Sticky Fingers.

Never a Stones fan but can't deny their importance. Watts always seemed to be the master of minimum effort to achieve maximum affect. RIP Charlie.

I completely agree. He was a solid and steady drummer, which worked perfectly with their music. He had a distinctive sound and style, and not all 'virtuoso's' can say that; chops without feel wouldn't have worked with the Stones.
Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!
