There is a misunderstanding, obviously. This is what I wrote in my further description of the theme (reply to Greg): " Either way, body percussion and other techniques of producing sounds by using parts of the human body may be performed on their own or as an accompaniment to music and/or dance." |

@Prophesy disaster: I am in favor of opening sometimes polls to groups present in Pa, and sometimes to polls of prog music only. In fact, we have already done polls open to groups of progarchives: with We love the sixties I opened to proto-prog and prog-related, then with the poll on the Protest songs I opened to all the groups present in PA. The Anders also did a folk poll open to bands present in PA (I chose Stormy Six) and I don't remember who else. @Mila-13 I don't know any band that makes music only with the body: the snap of their hands or whatever. At most I know the vocal groups, a famous example: the Housemartins singing The Caravan of Love.

Yes, to all of the above, speaking to the potential themes (if there are lesser [or more] participants, and sometimes including PA artists; what comprises the body used as a musical instrument etc.

About the "Body as a Musical Instrument" theme, there are many possibilites and they are not necessarily limited to a particular music genre, f.e. whistling, clapping hands, snapping fingers, stomping/tapping foot. In fact it is primarily about percussion and rhythm. Moreover, some thechniques include the use of vocals (vocal percussion) such as beatboxing or the Indian "konnakol". Many of those rhythm techniques are used in dance music also in the Western world. An expansion of the subject would be another option, f.e. under the title "The World Is a Drum"? But if that is too complicated as a poll theme, I can still stick to Asia. Btw. when is my turn, Lorenzo? Edited by Mila-13 - August 23 2021 at 15:29 |

No, I know how to behave in the restaurant now, I don't tear at the meat with my hands. If I've become a man of the world somehow, that's not necessarily to say I'm a worldly man.

In principle I'm with you Lorenzo, although I don't think it's a big problem if once in a while there's a more "specialist" theme with fewer potential participants.

My particular possibility as an artist who uses the body in conjunction with creating music, plays an istrument, but against different parts of his body, as opposed to a dancer only interpreting music with the body. This person also sometimes has been accompanied by other instruments, played by others, so again, not sure if it would fit the theme as imagined by the author. Admittedly, all instruments are played with the body, after all and voice itself is indeed an instrument. I don't know how many people would have a huge backlog of such a thing, after all.
I agree that the idea is not to pull up the most obscure strange stuff out there, but to present artists you readily are aware of that others may not be. But that is just me. One person's obscurity, is after all, potentially another person's treasure.

Perhaps I didn't understand the proposal. It seemed to me that the next poll of Mila-13 had as a theme asian music, and in this regard I explained to Mila-13 which, in my opinion, the theme should not cover only Asian artists because, perhaps, some of us do not listen a lot to Asian music and have no favorite artists for that kind of music. The important thing is to extend the theme to every music with Asian influences, in the melody or composition or arrangement etc. The goal of these Interactive Poll is to share among us artists not present in PAs that are among our favorites, which are part of our personal history. For this reason, the themes of the Polls are optional, the polls without any theme go well. When I proposed an poll with a theme, following the example of Micky, and I chose the Latin American music, some forumists have said they would not have participated, since they didn't listen to that kind of music, but I immediately tell them that they could choose any Western group that had made some songs with Latin American influence, from Raggae to Tex Mex, from Rock Chicano to Tango and so on. The Bob Dyaln of Desire for example would have gone well, as well as Mink de Ville, Los Lobos or, to come to England, many songs by The Clash and Police went well. Now, if I read about music made with the body, I wouldn't know what to think about, it seems to me a very specific theme and I don't know anyone who makes music with the body. And I don't think it would make sense to research on the internet to find some songs (which maybe I don't like) to propose. These Polls, as I conceived them, are not a hidden treasure hunt. If instead we talk about songs where the artist uses the voice as a musical instrument - always intended in a very broad and flexible sense, that is songs where the voice is very important - then I believe that this is available to everyone. Some will present very original songs for technique, other more conventional songs. Moreover, if we are lovers of artists or songs that forumists know a few, and that belong to a particular genre, keeping broad and flexible themes we will always find the way to post them and make them know to the formists. For example, I managed to post, on an Poll open by TCAT, not by me, church songs performed by a polyphonic choir, and only with traditional Italian instruments (Litania). But I would never open a poll dedicated to sacred polyphonic choirs, because many forumists may not be interested. In conclusion, to me all the themes are fine, as well as the absence of themes, so also the theme on Asian music and on the voice as a musical instrument, provided that the themes are not too specific and do not force me and others to not participate or to search and then participate with an artist we know little. |

Great idea Mila-13. I have some potential songs in mind. Will we be able to use artists found in the archives?

Sharing music and having fun sounds about right to me. I wanted to raise that potential issue regarding vocalizations in particular since sometimes people will request further clarification on regards to what is appropriate or permissible. I very much like the idea, and expect that it will be a very enjoyable and interesting round. The concert was from before I joined this site, maybe in 2004. He performed with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. He was so engaging and charismatic. I don't know if he's still as good as he was then. |

The human body as a musical instrument can mean many things, including the use of inhaled and exhaled air and vocal sounds. The question whether various vocal technyques can be seen as part of the matter I couldn't clearly answer right now. But I'd agree with you that a broad interpretation of the theme would make sense. The main idea here is to add another aspect of music to the disussion and the more people participate the better. Either way, body percussion and other techniques of producing sounds by using parts of the human body may be performed on their own or as an accompaniment to music and/or dance. I mean, at the end of the day we all want to share good music and have fun, don't we? You attended a Bobby McFerrin concert, how cool this is that?! Is he still as good as he used to be? The voice is a subtle but fragile instrument. Edited by Mila-13 - August 23 2021 at 01:27 |

^ No, I just mean if they did something like that, maybe teamed up with Yo-Yo Ma on cello for a classy affair. I think I know what I would nominate, and it does not include fart rock or anything to do with the dark farts. When it comes to what sort of vocaliations are permissible, since you mentioned beat boxing, one will have specify. For instance, could Tuvan throat singing, or growling be applicable? By the way, I saw Bobby McFerrin in concert, and that was amazing.
Since solo body performances are out, the solo hand performance of The Sound of One Hand Clapping is right out (just joking, I got ya). |

Yes, you got e.g. clapping hands, snapping fingers, stomping, whistling, beatboxing to mention a few. Are you serious, the London Symphonics worked with Mr. Methane? These Brits are definitely crazy! Edited by Mila-13 - August 22 2021 at 15:21 |

He was funny on Britain's Got Talent. They complained about the sour note at the end. Yuck. If he's been backed up by the London Symphony Orchestra doing Air on a G-String, or Concerto in E-Fart Minor, that might work. The body can be used in so many ways. I can think of lots using the body in different ways. a very interesting idea. |

I can remember that guy, he participated in various talent shows! 😂 There are almost countless other options. The human body can be considered as the original musical instrument. Of course I'm not thinking of solo performances in the first place but rather of songs or musical work including such sounds or noise. Edited by Mila-13 - August 22 2021 at 14:46 |

Btw. I had an inspiration today for a new poll theme: The human body as a musical instrument. What do you guys think about this one? Have you ever had a similar theme in previous editions? Edited by Mila-13 - August 22 2021 at 14:24 |

A history section is always helpful and after some time inevitable. I have hosted various online song competitions in the past and I used excel spreadsheets at the time. Google spreadsheets are also a good option. They are practical for various reasons but one of them is that you would not have to do all the work yourself by granting access to the poll participants. |
