I just realized that Metallica's classic "Black Album" could celebrate its 30 years anniversary just a few days ago (there was an article on it on the Danish music site Gaffa).

As you probably know, I am not much of a metal fan, but Metallica is one of the bands I can actually relate to, partly because there is a melodic side to them, but also because of the formal complexity of some of their early work - my favourite in that respect probably being Master of Puppets.

But I am still unsure of what to think of the Black Album. It does have some good songs on it of course. My issue is not - as with many others - that it sounds more commercial than the previous albums - but more that I miss a bit of variation. With the exception of "Nothing Else Matters", the songs sound rather alike to my ears, and when I try to listen my way through the whole album, I usually lose concentration at some point.

But what do you guys think of the album?

I’m not the best to answer this, as I’ve not heard all the Metallica albums. In fact, I’d never even heard of the band until Enter Sandman was released, and took over the world. I guess I was about 15 years old at the time, and it was probably the heaviest thing I had ever heard. I wasn’t really into anything heavy at all (apart from Iron Maiden and Guns n’ Roses) so Enter Sandman kind of blew me away, but I did really like it. My little brother bought the Black album, and played it incessantly. My mum and dad hated it. I wasn’t sure what to think. I guess I mainly preferred the less heavy tracks like Wherever I May Roam and Nothing Else Matters (although I never liked The Unforgiven), but from memory (and I haven’t listened to the album for probably 25 years) my favourite song was Of Wolf and Man, which was heavier.

I never really liked Metallica enough to buy any album, but I’ve heard most of their albums over the years. The Black album definitely isn’t, in my opinion, their best - but nor is it even close to being their worst. Most of my favourite Metallica songs aren’t on the Black Album, but there are some rather unavoidable classics (although some have worn thin after hearing them time and time again on the radio. Overplaying is definitely something the Black Album has suffered).

I actually completely agree with you, though. The biggest problem with the Black Album is not that it is (too) commercial, but simply that it’s lacking in variety. It could either have done with being a bit shorter, or having a bit more variation in sound. None of the songs are actually bad (even I don’t like The Unforgiven), but the album can feel wearing, through the lack of variety.

Then again, you’ll probably disregard everything I’ve just said when I tell you that my favourite Metallica album is Lulu. 😜

And Justice for All I will argue is progressive thrash metal, and completely unintentional. They were peaking musically.

I will argue the same exact thing for Megadeth Rust in Peace, which is my favorite.

Metallica's Black Album is almost perfect. My only complaint concerning it is about some of its guitar solos. Those harmonies are not a decent fit to some of the songs in the album. I like Hammett as a guitarist, and I think his solos are going well with the songs in general. But, as for the Black Album, this is not always the case. Black Album also "killed" Megadeth's sick Rust in Peace album, in that; most of the bands followed the Black Album's dark and laid down approach, instead of Rust in Peace's frenetic one.

Kill 'Em All is a crazy and great album, with some flaws. But very revolutionary, anarchic, wild, and passionate. Ride the Lightning is great, but some of its songs are not that impressive. Master of Puppets is simply awesome. I also love Load. Not a metal album, but splendid anyways.

One thing I appreciate about Metallica is that, they never lost their enthusiasm and passion. Even St. Anger displays that merit, even if it was musically weak.

Not even Megadeth followed (their own) frenetic Rust in Peace LOL, Countdown to Extinction was more, as you say "laid back". But those were the 90s, thrash artists in the 90s had to change sound, most of them did, blame grunge and groove metal if you want to...

Load and ReLoad are uneven, there are songs I like on both.

St Anger was terrible, I don't find any redeeming qualities to it.

^ Load is "uneven"? Sorry but this is a ridiculous perception, from my point of view.

Yes, even Megadeth followed Metallica in the '90s.

A rock star (could be Dee Snider, but I'm not sure) once said that the '90s was the hangover of the great party called the '80s. I agree.

"ridiculous perception"? What does that even mean? LOL

Several songs on the album do nothing for me. Ain't My Bitch is ruined by terrible lyrics, 2x4 seems like Sabbath throwaway song, Poor Twisted Me is one of the worst songs they ever made and Ronnie is close to that as well.

ReLoad was a grower for me, the only song I dislike these days is Low Man's Lyric, it drags on for to long...

One meaning of "perception" is: the way in which something is regarded, understood, or interpreted.

And I'm sure you know what ridiculous means.

ReLoad is surely uneven, but Load is an extremely consistent album.

BTW, ...And Justice For All is an ambivalent album for me. Great songs in it, but the sound is horrible for my liking. I think it has a perfect sound, but very artificial sounding. I like organic sounds...

so basically my point of view on Load is ridiculous LOL I was in denial LOL

AJFA is still organic sounding, it's not like there's programming on it. Not a well produced album, true, but still...

I find ReLoad much better than Load, much better songwriting, but that's me. Tongue

^ Oh, I have to make everything clear for you, I guess... Ermm

Organic sounding means... well.. organic sounding. Sounding... AJfA has organic musicianship, and with all its flaws, it is obvious that, in it, the instruments were played by humans. But, the sound is not organic IMO. Which is a sound production and a post-production issue. I think it is a very well produced album. But that kind of production is not my thing.

Then we still come to the word "uneven"... You may like ReLoad better, but that is the "uneven" one, when compared to Load. Also, I and you like Theli of Therion better, but Vovin is more "even".

you do know "better", "uneven" etc are subjective terms. When I say ReLoad is better than Load, I'm being subjective, it's just my opinion, my subjective perception if i may say so.

I find Theli superior to Vovin (my opinion). Without Theli, there would have never been a Vovin. LOL

^ I do know where subjectivity and objectivity begins and ends enough, and I fear self-justification is some trait of (or self-justifying is a method for) some people that are not that good at determining it. Anyway, I'll go on seeing Load as uneven ridiculous, and you can go on seeing it that way. Not an issue for me.

Exactly; Countdown is a step back in speed and technicality, but the band soared popularity wise from there.

Agreed about Load/Reload.

Some Kind of Monster is still hilarious to watch.

I have serious problems with you!!! Angry

LOL

I think Load and ReLoad are like The Matrix and The Matrix Reloaded. (See the analogy?Tongue)

I mean, ReLoad has some really cool songs, but is not as consistent as Load. I'd use the word "uneven" for the albums that don't flow smoothly. Be it because of some weak songs, or it is thematically disarrayed. And I like some such albums. It is not an element of an album that makes it outright bad in my book.
