We venture deeper into what seems to be a generally maligned decade, although I must admit that I was positively delighted by the amount of great prog music from the previous two years and I am having no difficulty finding sufficient beautiful material from this year either. Don't worry, we'll reach darker times eventually Wink

1. National Health - D.S. Al Coda
2. Allan Holdsworth - I.O.U.
3. Mike Oldfield - Five Miles Out
4. Von Zamla - Zamlaranamma
5. Brand X - Is There Anything About?
6. Katra Turana - Katra Turana
7. Apprentice - Rough Draft
8. King Crimson - Beat
9. Rush - Signals
10. Adrian Belew - Lone Rhino

Honourable mentions:
- Brian Eno - Ambient IV: On Land
- Cartoon - Cartoon
- Jean-Luc Ponty - Mystical Adventures

1979-1981 were very strong in my book, 1982 not so much. I'd have a hard time nominating more than 10, I'd have more than 15 for 1981 easily. The Dreaming is a top 5 (if not 3) of all time club member though.

Kate Bush - The Dreaming
King Crimson - Beat
Art Zoyd - Phase IV
Anyone's Daughter - in Blau
Manfred Mann's Earthband - Somewhere in Africa
Residents - The Tunes of Two Cities
Eloy - Time to Turn
Sally Oldfield - In Concert
Jean-Michel Jarre - Concerts in China
Jethro Tull - Broadsword and the Beast (Yes I do like that!)

Which makes it even more surprising that you didn't find place for the Full Circle-album. I think 1982 is a great year for music (perhaps for new wave in particular). Almost as strong as 79/80/81. If you like the Residents at all, those two on my list are highly reccomended - and you'd probably find much to enjoy on Das Geheime Leben.

I was thinking about including it, but honestly it disappointed me at the time (quite structureless but less sharp and innovative than the Can stuff that can be described by the same term) and I haven't listened to it a lot in the meantime. I'm obviously a big fan of these musicians and particularly  Holger, but I think he had quite some quality drop between Movies and Peak of Normal (which already is quite a bit weaker than Movies) and then the great stuff he started to put out in the nineties. I could indeed have listed The Tunes of Two Cities, it has no year assigned on my machine so I missed that (all my lists may have a bit of bias due to occasional false or missing dating); I don't know Intermission and Das Geheime Leben and will give them a shot.

Other than that, true, I have quite a bit more great non-prog stuff from 1982.

Maybe, I haven't really thought of its structure or (lack of) innovation, but just love the whole groove and feel of it (and the vocals) from start to finish. This kraut/dub/funk-thing is exactly the early 1980's Can-album I wish existed - and because of Full Circle it sort of does exist... In my opinion

There there, I put the Residents in, and "Peak of Normal" in 1981 which also was misdated on my machine. (Not that anyone should be interested. Tongue)

John Cale's Music for a New Society and Rush's Signals stand out in this otherwise rather forgettable year.
