Traveling Bell was the moniker of American multi-instrumentalist Kathleen Baird. A member of Spires That in the Sunset Rise, Traveling Bell released two records in the early 2000s, presenting more subdued and melodic but no less strange material compared to her primary band. She would independently distribute Scatter Ways and Lullaby For Strangers in 2004, and both would subsequently be officially reissued by Secret Eye Records - the latter would be reissued under her given name, with the project put to rest.

Baird's music can be recommended to listeners of Larkin Grimm, the Incredible String Band, In Gowan Ring, Current 93, Black Forest/Black Sea, the Tower Recordings and Six Organs of Admittance.

(I've included the original and the reissued versions of each, as both have different tracklistings and edits)

"Scatter Ways" (2004)

"Lullaby For Strangers" (2005)

From the old Secret Eye website: Scatter Ways is the debut solo album from Chicago-based musician Kathleen Baird, who is also a member of the Comus-channeling freak-folk outfit, Spires that in the Sunset Rise. Traveling Bell replaces Spires' hysterical ecstasy with a slower, slyer, subtler tone. Kathleen's voice is deep, sleepy and Nico-esque, her instrumentation loose and imaginative. Like if Brigitte Fontaine fronted Current 93. Her lush and exotic arrangements include bells, mbira, guitars, and other plectra, flutes, and synthesizers, all orchestrated to outline her careful, but never fussy, songcraft.

Having trouble finding sounds from the band.

Can you provide alternatives (YT samples are minimal), please??

Hugues I managed to download from the site posted above but it was a big hassle as you have to pay to be able to download more than one at a time.  I listened a bit but am not finished my audition

My apologies, I wasn't aware of the paywall and the inability to batch download, but I meant to put up zip files as it is and mistakenly uploaded folders. I can send both of you the zips if you'd prefer.

Also, the old and sorely-missed Volcanic Tongue catalogue wrote this about one of her records:

Solo album from Spires That In The Sunset Rise member Kathleen Baird that’s a little more restrained than her work with the mothership, touching on bases shared with contemporary folk-spirits like PG Six, Josephine Foster and Espers as well as referencing the spirit-forms of ISB, Syd Barrett, Roy Harper and Linda Perhacs.

Thanks for bumping this, I was planning on doing so myself. I checked the revised google drive links I sent to you and Hugues and they still work, so I hope you enjoy revisiting Ka and her beguiling music.

the only thing i've been able to hear (via discogs) is the yt vid Scatter ways, but it's 3 minutes long

however what i did hear is the typical wyrd/acid/psych folk, which is widely represented here.

three minutes is not enpugh to judge on, so if there is any other easy ways i'm all ears

However travelling bell is a side project to spirethat in the sunset rise
http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=6988
which is in PF already so there is a safe bet it should be in Thumbs Up

Hugues, I sent you a link to her discography a few months ago in a private message. I'll resend it now.

they are approved!  Gordy, do you have a bio?  Your first post in this thread isn't bad if it's your own writing.  Once we add the group, you can add their albums as a member of the site

Thanks
Ken

Great to hear, Ken! The bio above is my own work and I just did some last minute editing, so it should be ready for Ka's admission whenever you are. I'd be happy to add her records, and hopefully it's not too difficult a process for a neophyte like me.

Thanks, Ken. I just added both her records but I don't think the cover images are showing up properly. Otherwise, pretty painless.
