Arthur Machen (Arthur Llewellyn Jones)

A Welsh writer of the supernatural. Some say one of the pioneers of gothic fiction. Also he is said to be a horror writer, but that definition hasn't clicked with me yet. His works are definitely captivating and intriguing. Sometimes darkly charming... But that may be about me... I get scared while reading books extremely rarely.

I think the guy is brilliant. A great mind conveying his intellect in a subtle but also clear way. I can read his works like drinking water. They flow perfectly and smoothly. He doesn't have a grandiose style, but it can be overlooked. I will probably read all his works available for me to read. A rare case, for my part.

I love his novella "The Great God Pan" and read many of his short stories too. I think the 50s horror movie "Night of the Demon" was inspired by his writings. his novels "The Three Impostors" and "The Hill of Dreams"  are on the "to read" list of Friede and me

I got Machen's Tales of Horror & the Supernatural as a paperback when I was a kid. Most likely because the cover had a picture of a burnt corpse with its eye socket ripped out. It had most of his more well known stories: The Terror, The Great God Pan, The White People, etc. Haven't read it in years, was not too impressed.

Machen's great. Ditto to all of the above remarks.
