England played well but Italy played better. Penalty master Southgate brought in two young players just for the penalties and put all the responsibility on them, even though they really hadn't played that much before. Southgate has done well up to that point but it's him not the players who lost the shootout.

Hi,
Agreed. I would rather have the more experienced folks on the field for the shoot! Not to take anything away from the youngsters, but I imagine that nerves would be an issue a lot more than it would be for more experienced players that have been "there" before, not necessarily in this tournament but in other games!

He took off Henderson and Walker who have a history of missing penalties, I'd personally have liked to have seen them on 5 minutes earlier to get a touch before the shootout. |

That comment is unworthy of you, plenty of white Englishman have missed penalties. |

Hugely disappointed that England lost but well done Italy on the victory, achieved despite losing probably their best player Chiesa to injury. I thought England sat back too much in the second half and should have brought on Rashford and Sancho at the start of extra time to use their pace on a possibly tiring defence. Instead they came on right at the end of extra time and then had to take the single most important kicks of their lives in the penalty shootout having barely touched the ball.

Fair enough, but at least an experienced player should do the last one.

I think by the way Chiellini and Bonucci were outstanding. Not just what they did themselves, but also they showed some proper authority. Chiellini having fun with everyone before penalties against Spain was priceless, and this time they created the goal together, and were always commanding the game from the back (after the second minute that is). Also I didn't have Di Lorenzo on my radar before the tournament. What a quality player! Donnarumma's two saved penalties were not easy either, but Pickford did well, too.

Just resurfacing on PA after a bit of a break. I'm obviously very happy about the Italy win, though I empathize with England fans (shout out to my friend Ian - sorry about that, better luck next time

One of the worst finals I think I've ever seen (and I've seen a few in my 59 years) England controlled the game comfortably in the first half but without that cushion of a 2nd goal, the longer it went on, the more anxious they became and the more dominant Italy became. Felt sorry for young Saka and am disgusted by the racist abuse the players who missed their penalty kicks have been subjected to on social media (and on PA) Shame on you.

Hi, I think Southgate wanted fresh legs in the game, but he selected them too late. I, personally, would not have selected the youngsters ahead of the bigger names on the English squad, however I wonder how/why a couple of the big names that went around did not demand the ball, if it was indeed the case and the youngsters were given a chance to make a name for themselves. I think that Southgate made one move too many ... that was not necessary? All in all, I thought that if it got to the crap shoot, there would be a lucky loser!

He brought two players on for the penalties and they both missed, so maybe he should have brought them on earlier? And maybe it was too much pressure for a teenager? I have to say though I always get get nervous when players try to be clever and do a stuttering run-up. To my you should just give it some welly to one corner or the other so the goalie can't stop it even if he goes the right way

Hear hear, disgusting. I can't imagine what it must have been like for him to take that last penalty especially at his young age when he has little experience but kudos to him for stepping up. Penalties are always a terrible way to decide a game like this.

I have to say I think penalty shootouts are a good way to decide a game like this. What are the alternatives? Some people say it's down to luck but in fact shooting and stopping the ball are central football skills, and psychology and character are also important. There were some interesting penalties in this tournament by the way, and only about 50% success (both in the shootouts and in the regular games). Edited by Lewian - July 12 2021 at 04:59 |

I agree. The golden goal was a sickening thing. Long live the penalty shootout! Edited by Shadowyzard - July 12 2021 at 06:46 |

To be honest I can't think of a better alternative (except for last night, the team with the fewer yellow cards should have won

Agree, if you put it in the side netting or top corner there is no way the keeper gets to it, any professional player should be able to hit that target more than 80% of the time. Anything too cute or too close to the middle of the goal gives the keeper too much of a chance.
Penalty shootout's suck ass but there hasn't been a better alternative decided yet. Personally I'd like trials of taking two players off from each team every 10 minutes in extra time and play sudden death. With a wide open field and tired players you'd get more goal scoring chances. The problem with the previous golden goal was the risk reward favored defense too much.

Somehow I'm not surprised such creative ideas come from the English side. ![]() What you suggest could be entertaining, but chances are a player who is on the pitch in this system for 120+ minutes will not be all too enthusiastic about it on the next day.
