Have not been much around lately and won't be, at least untill Monday, so a quickie from me, because everything out of this world that came to my mind is on PA... A recent discovery, thanks to one of these IA polls (I think it was proposed by Ian...) is the next that comes to mind. Out of laziness and lack of time to look further, two suggestions from the same band - no aliens, but maybe because of the previous poll, I'm still wandering around a bit... The Comet is Coming - Astral Flying: The Comet is Coming - Journey Through the Asteroid Belt: The latter will be my nomination if I'm not back before with something else...

Mica Levi - Alien Loop (Logan) It contains some very disharmonic and dissonant strings in what sounds to me like the soundtrack to a horror film. It also reminds me of the guitar noise effects from the Sort Sol version of "Ode to Billie Joe" which had a heavy use of tremolo too. Cacophonic and nightmarish, but also strangely beautiful in its own way. Keldian - Starchildren (Shadowyzard) A mix between the lighter end of heavy metal and 80's electro. Since it is quite far away from my taste, I don't think I can really judge it properly, but there are definitely some good elements in it. I think the sound is a bit too polished for me, even with the heavy distortion and double pedal. Klaus Nomi - Total Eclipse (JD) There is verfremdung en masse, and the setup is very theatrical. Musically it has some clear new wave vibes, and it is quite catchy. I have never been a big fan of operatic singing in pop and rock, nor of falsetto, but it somehow works here. Comet is Coming - Journey Through the Asteroid Belt (suitkees) It is based on a 5/4 beat. Feels a bit like an intersection between two tracks with vocals, but maybe I am wrong. With the sound effects and bass I somehow come to think of some of the tracks on The Clash' Sandinista album. It's nice to know the first nominations already, because it gives me more time to listen. So I am clearly in favour of this format.

This is a backup choice in case no one in the US can access the
Gnags song. Unfortunately, a song with a similar title has already been
submitted, but I really like the track anyway.

Cat Stevens - Novim's Nightmare The lyrics don't exactly give it away very clearly, but this starts the Numbers story set on the planet Polygor. It is indeed a bit unearthly at least. Cat Stevens has some gloriously entangled songs, doesn't he? Edited by Lewian - July 08 2021 at 14:47 |

I had the time to hear one more song right now, which is, for more or less obvious reasons, the Celestial Asylum one. I'm impressed! Great stuff!

I found this, couldn't find a single one on YT, however. Apologies for it's being a spotify link, I went to vevo.com for a search. Let me know if it's at least the same version (if indeed it works for you), whether there is a video or not really shouldn't matter, at least to me. https://open.spotify.com/track/3YqmfC9grXn10SVFhDtTio

^ That is the right version. The YouTube link was just an audio clip, there's no music video.

Notes on Page One, first listen:
JD: Classix Nouveaux “Nasty Little Green Men” Begins with a repetitive keyboard and
percussion, then guitars, and vocals enter with a sense of urgency. 80’s ish sound, with a classic verses/chorus
structure. Guitars are a little wangly
and there are some fun whirlies on the keys.
Klaus Nomi “Total Eclipse”
Singer’s look is a mix of other-worldly and mime, with an operatic
delivery, must be 80’s as well, I’m guessing from the rest of the band and the
sound of the piece. Fascinating to watch
and listen, as it combines styles musically and is very campy/theatrical. Logan: Tubeway Army “Praying To The Aliens” Electronic whaaas and deedlees with a robotic type voice (80’s again?). Music is very angular, going with the general robotic sort of delivery. Oh I see it is Gary Numan, I almost said reminds me of him, lol. Didn’t know where he came from (space, lol?). Mica Levi “Alien Loop” Begins with space whirlies, I like the more free-form start of this to the previous one. An ambient piece of music, it is more aligned to how I feel about space than the rigidity of the first piece. Cristi: Hail Spirit Noir “Alien Lip Reading” ‘Eavy metal, here, mixed with a bit of psych. Vocals are a bit different than one would expect with such a heavy, swirly outfit. Theremin swirls drift through. The vocals remind me more of late 60’s, in that the vocals are effected more than one would hear would later metal. Warlord “Aliens” Right on in to heavy guitars and drums after a short swirl entry. This is a driving metal song, with some really high falsetto notes occasionally from the lead singer. Comes to a dead stop in the middle, then picks right up and goes into an quasi-Middle Eastern sort of riff, then the driving guitars start up again. Air “Space Maker” Echo-y percussive beat, guitar strum, bass and piano. This one has a more ominous sound to it. Electronic keys shimmeringly join in, helping to create a more complex and sophisticated sound than the previous two. UFO “Space Child” This one I do remember from the past. A bluesy sound to the vocals, in a slow ballad sort of piece. Scorching guitar lead. Shadowyzard: Keldian “Starchildren” Plinky angular keyboards and steady guitars and drums get this off to a steady start. Doubled up and harmonizing vocals kick in. Another driving metal piece, this has a nice break in the middle with strings (probably done on keys?) and a second break with plinkies, adding interest to the piece. Bruce Dickinson “Starchildren” Wastes no time in getting heavy with driving drums and a strident vocal. These are not light little starchildren, dancing airily about, they are the dark side of potential alien invasion. Hope they don’t make it here soon, lol. Celestial Asylum “Sumeria, Realm of the Gods” Begins with a Renaissance-styled guitar. Vocals come in, very like a group of minstrels, male and female both. Very courtly in feel, as perhaps ancient Sumeria would indeed likely be. Very pretty and rustic. George: The Firm “Star Trekkin’” I loved Dr Demento! I don’t remember this, though, it is quite fun, as expected. A light take on matters celestial, a novelty romp and cleverly done. The video is like a Pee Wee’s Playhouse Claymation, but of course all based on Star Trek. The Tubes “Space Baby” I remember when they were all the rage in SF clubs, never did get a chance to see them live, though. There is a sense of tongue-in-cheekiness to the piece. Not at all in the same style, but reminds me of Zappa in the sense of it’s commentary and theatrical feel. All competent musicianship here, there are some really fun vocal harmonies near the conclusion. Styx’s “Come Sail Away,” as done by Eric Cartman. As expected, quite the sendup of the original, done in Cartman’s voice. The piano playing is quite well done, joined with full band as the piece slowly builds. Everything is quite straight-forward except for the vocal. The center section is quite woogly for a moment or two, before going back to the arena rock style of band behind the vocal. Well done! |

This poll is really fun and right up my alley.
The first song that came to mind for me is: Billy Lee Riley & The Little Green Men - Flying Saucers Rock 'n' Roll I used to play this track way back in a band in the 80s when it was quite out of fashion but no matter the kind of crowd we got, they always got into it. We used to do an extended version with plenty of room for jamming and wild rock-a-billy lead guitar. By contrast my 2nd nominee would be by a fun song named Ancient Aliens by a bad band named Lemon Demon. Lemon Demon is a band created by musician Neil Cicierega who incidentally is quite a cult figure in the very early days of social media/viral world, as well as being multi-talented in numerous fields. I'm sorry, if you were right, I'd agree with you. Robin Williams.
