Wow! This was tough! Some absolutely amazing tracks in there, and I liked a lot of the pairings.
The easy way out would be to give one of my votes to Can, so I need choose only two other pairs. After all, I love Can, so it goes without saying that I love these two tracks. But that, indeed, would be the easy way out - so I’m not taking it! I ended up narrowing my choice down to the following pairs, as while there were some tracks I enjoyed a lot, often I wasn’t so enamoured with the other paired with those. But all of these, I enjoyed both selections, and the way they complement each other as much as they contrast: (Yes, it is six selections. I need to work out which three to vote for, but I will have to listen to them all again before I commit myself.) Penderecki: Threnody for the Victims / Tallis: Spem in alium Msaki: Dreams / Laibach: Smrt za smrt (Death for Death) E.R. Rundle: Heaven / Phenomena: Dance with the Devil King Missile: Heaven / Noir Désir: 666.667 Club M. Zamboni: Dolorama / Franco Battiato: L'ombra della Luce Talking Heads: Heaven / Kaizers Orchestra: Ompa til du dør |

Interestingly, at the very beginning I’ve considered classical music as
well and also some free jazz or jazz based contemporary improvisational
music. Yet I gave up that idea since, on one hand you anticipated me and on the other hand I thought that I could contribute in a
different way to musical diversity. I have a considerable collection of music
from Africa, Asia and Latin America. Moreover, due to my cultural background I’m
also quite familiar with the music of Eastern Europe.
Penderecki’s music appears in various thriller films but he also wrote original
music for films, and in particular for Andrzej Wajda’s historical drama
Katyń (2007), a film about the Katyń massacre, a mass execution of
Polish prisoner of war officers and citizens ordered by the Soviet
authorities in 1940 where Penderecki lost a close member of his own family. Mila is my real name. I had to adapt it to the special site subscription
demands but I didn’t want to use any kind of phantasy nickname. I would be glad
if you guys would call me by my real name. This
is more personal, friendlier and also more practical. Edited by Mila-13 - June 17 2021 at 14:14 |

This has been a very interesting interactive poll. Mainly because there are so many interpretations of Heaven and Hell, some literal, some whimsical, others deep and meaningful, some mischievous and some quite sobering. It was quite difficult to listen to them all at one sitting e.g. leaving the playlist on for a few hours and maintaining concentration. I found that it also depended on my mood or time of day and whether I felt patient or distracted. This also made me change my mind many times about my vote, and as others have mentioned, it is more about just enjoying/sharing/discussing rather than just picking a 1,2,3 spot. As Cristi also pointed out, it becomes more complicated when one song of a duo was loved and the other no so loved. I am re-listening again to them all, each as a paring only, and not individually. I have come up with a formula which will help my voting. I tend to be overtly literal (like Spock [But without his Beard]). What date does the poll/voting end by the way? ∆∆ A wonderful response, Mila. With your knowledge it would be great if you do one of these polls at some time (see interactive team thread if you want to sign up). I'm familiar with Wajda, but not that film. Thanks for the info.
∆ Malcom, there is no date when all votes "must' be in, but I think the next poll will be going up on Tuesday, so to get it in before then, voting by this coming Monday would be good. I doubt that I'll make up my mind before then, and then bite the proverbial bullet when that time comes. Edited by Logan - June 17 2021 at 23:53 |

There is indeed lots of great stuff in this one. Little listening and writing time these days I'm afraid (got to admit that the football watching plays a role in that and the rest of the world doesn't stop) but I should really go through everything at least twice before voting (at the moment I'm at about 70% of the first run).

Due to several other projects I am involved in, as well as my working schedule, I haven't really had time to listen yet. So expect my votes to come in rather late. But I will of course listen and comment on the submissions as usual. I will probably take the opportunity to skip one poll and then have more time to listen to the songs in this one.

Alrighty then... Some very interesting and some very disturbing tracks in this one. Without getting into a deep review of each and every choice, on the whole, I looked for music that best represented the Up and Downs, Goods and Bads and overall contrast between the two selections. I have to give my vote to Mila's selections of.. HEAVEN: Msaki - Dreams HELL: Laibach - Smrt za smrt (Death for Death) Msaki's soulful vocals mixed with a soft world beat is beautifully produced and very dreamy. Laibach's raw and mechanical beat dredges on like a slow amble to death until it disintegrates into chaos An excellent pairing.

^ A very good choice. For the three I will be choosing I'm still betwixt six duo options methinks, although I appreciated every one that was mentioned. By the way, here is the playlist from page five for the nominations to make it easier for some to find.

Okay, I plan to bite the bullet. I won't vote for ones I know well, but I was very pleased to see these on the list. I love Can and Tago Mago, and it gets my nod of approval. I knew and love Jacky's "White Horses" (that's a kind of music very much in my wheelhouse).
There are more I would have liked to vote for, and I won't list all of those because I appreciate every duo here. In poll order and lazily just copy-pasting the poll form based on my taste du jour (I've vacillated on this and am rarely happy choosing just three): Matteucci/Ahmann: To One in Paradise/Ali: O Vis Aeternitatis Teeth of the Sea: Whilst We Live in Fear/ Reynes: Heavenly... Idem: Suedirland Bantry Bay / FM Einheit: Korrektionsanstalt King Missile: Heaven / Noir Désir: 666.667 Club I'm still not sure, have to whittle it to three. I will wait until tomorrow to decide. #1 Matteucci/Ahmann: To One in Paradise/Ali: O Vis Aeternitatis Matteucci/Ahmann: To One in Paradise The irony of this track truly struck me. Maybe just my interpretation of it and how it appealed to me. A gesture to Heaven and Hell. We know what comes with love and feeling at peace or contentment. Always around each corner we can fall back into Hell it seems always there behind a frosted veil. I tried not to read the poem or story when listening but I then went back after and did read it and realized that what I had been feeling was quite accurate. Perhaps I had already been swayed by title of the piece. In any case, it reminded me of how lucky I was to have spent some time in/on Heaven on Earth. Ali: O Vis Aeternitatis Wonderful, eerie, heavenly, powerful and a cry to the unknown. She has such amazing vocal control and articulation. I felt myself swirling around in a twister in between Heaven and Hell. The yearning for the spiritual and to be at one with the elements, but knowing inside I am just grasping at ideas and all the tome having to acknowledge my mortality. The reason I picked these two as my #1 pick were for the closeness of the interpretation of Heaven and Hell and the vast differences so many of us have in what we chose for our nominees. Specifically, what we may interpret either literally or metaphorically as Heaven or Hell. These two songs were wrapped tightly together. #2 Anuna: Whispers of Paradise/Metallica: The Call of Ktulu Anuna: Whispers of Paradise. If I had to pick one song that was the most Heavenly it was this song. Just the smoothness and soft flow of the all the instruments and vocals. Sounded like a clarinet, harps, strings maybe, and more, just divine and I would have been content if it lasted for half an hour. Metallica: The Call of Ktulu The song kind of begins with hope and there is little threat to hint at something sinister. However, being lulled into safety, I realized that I had been fooled. I was now entering a nightmare zone with no way out! #3 Msaki: Dreams/Laibach: Smrt za smrt (Death for Death) Msaki: Dreams Dreamy intro making me feel like flying somewhere. Vocals pure, melancholic but upbeat. Thoughtful and meaningful. Being some where you want to be even though you may not really want to be there. A realistic and truthful song. The lyrics did it for me here as they matched perfectly with the music vocal performance, which was beautiful. Laibach: Smrt za smrt (Death for Death) This one enticed me into its lair and tricked me into thinking there was something good about it. Be it artistic industrial (which I love) or something just too surreal for me to comprehend. However, it was a hell of the song. It felt angry, political, twisted, bitter, sadistic. I just had to look the lyrics up and yes, this song is pure hell. Any of my top 3 could have won top place but as a threesome I feel content with my choices. A special mention to Penderecki: Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima. I find myself being quite cut off and singular these days. I feel that the world has jaded my thoughts over the years. When we grew up and were taught about this unspeakable event, I really had no understanding of it. I wonder what I would have thought of the track if the title had been something different. In any care, this one certainly would have been #1 for Hell, as a standalone or on its own. Overall for me it was the hardest poll to date. I really enjoyed every song posted in this poll ![]() Edited by tigerfeet - June 20 2021 at 20:39 |

Thank you for the vote, but particularly for the analysis of how the two pieces made you feel, for this was what I was going for in the selections. They may not be that far apart in one sense, but they are also ages apart (2016 & 1150, respectively) in when they were written. Music can certainly have a sense of eternity within it, and for me, these two pieces express that.
