1. Harumi - Fire By The River

One of the most beautiful things I've heard lately. A true 60s psych pop gem. 

I'll need to think of my other votes a little more, but Harumi as number one was a no-brainer.

Finally, I had the time to listen to the playlist... I started commenting in the beginning on all suggestions, but unfortunately didn't find the occasion to listen to (and comment on) all the others.

The playlist is once again a very good listen, with lots of diversity. Some were too familiar to my ears to be a contender others were (very) good, but in the end I singled out four tracks:
- Banco de Gaia; I commented on this one and it makes my very-short-list
- Gotye; upon hearing this I knew immediately this would be in my top 3: quite accessible, but at the same time very rich and original arrangements - great music!
- Lalli; not aware that I heard of her before, but I love her voice, and the songwriting and playing here is very strong. Definitely on the podium!
- Jimmie Spheeris; great song, wonderfully executed, very convincing, with indeed a strong 70s feel.

Finally, for my voting, I think I keep this order...

Two other tracks will probably lead me to explore more of these artists:
- Mikko Joensuu; normally I'm not that much fan of sequencer based electronic music, but this one is much richer than that (and the percussion taking over the dominance of the sequencer...). Quite nice!
- Manuel de Falla; as I said, I know this specific composition of him, but I don't think I know much more of his work - needs to be corrected.

The razamataz is a pain in the bum

Quirky artpoprock goodness. 

3. Mikko Joensuu - House Of Fire

Despite being his compatriot, I was only vaguely familiar with Mikko Joensuu and had no idea he does this kind of stuff. Quite Tangerine Dream-ish and soundtrack-ish. 

Honourable mentions to Boston for no-frills rock with cool keyboard solos and Yngwie Malmsteen for the amount of notes he played while still managing to rock out.

Chose these..but many were intriguing...
-XTC- Great Fire....big fan and I love that track and lp...imho one of the most creative pop rock bands of all time

-Harumi-Fire By The River....I love 60's pop and psychy stuff...gotta vote for this one

-Reve- Moths....never heard this before....melodic and powerful ...reminds me of some band but cannot recall who...nice track.

Possibly a whole new thread on weird and wonky instruments.
In the mean time...here's one for you called an Angklung. I bought one on a Europe trip about twenty years ago. You play it by rocking the 'notes' back and forth. Fast, slow in combinations. Kinda cool instrument.

  Love the idea for that thread....and this certainly suits the idea.  Peoples have been so creative over the centuries in creating new ways to create deliberate sounds.

  This one was in my top three for a long time, but I made a mistake of listening to more by them.  Not that I didn't like the band, I did, and would certainly listen to more again and/or see them in a live setting.  But I just didn't like the rest of what I heard as much as the impact this had on me, no matter how much I listened to it afterwards, and that listening to other songs may have coloured how I felt about it in relationship to the other material presented here.  

Anyone else found this to be so?  It's really tempting to go ahead and seek out more right away, but I think I'll avoid it next time so that song or piece of music can stand on it's own separate merit in the poll.

As usual, it took me a long time and many listens to come up with three favourites. These days I find it particularly difficult to connect to new music, and this was no exception. Mind you, as the saying goes, it's not you, it's me Wink - meaning that the quality of the selections is not in discussion.

Anyway, here's my top three picks:

XTC - Great Fire: I can't say I'm an expert on this band, but I have to wonder why they haven't been added to the database. Their unique brand of "progressive pop " (or art pop, or whatever) is on a par with that of Supertramp, Roxy Music or 10cc.

Joni Mitchell - Cold Blue Steel and Sweet Fire: THAT VOICE. Enough said.

Boston - Smokin': Great, organ-driven hard rock that reminded me a lot of Deep Purple. Maybe not the most original song ever, but relentless and energetic.

Honourable mentions: Lila Downs & Caetano Veloso (lovely Latin-influenced stuff), Lalli (great voice), and Stravinsky.
