Donaldson Toussaint L'Ouverture Byrd II, or simply Dr. Donald Byrd was an American jazz musician from Michigan, active between 1932 and 2013 (his death). A well-received and respected trumpeter and vocalist, Mr Donald Byrd has released more than forty studio albums as band leader, the most famous of which is probably the obscure jazz fusion gem 'Places and Spaces' from 1975. Intertwining funk and his jazz roots, he has become one of the most influential figures in the genre, influencing, for example, Herbie Hancock.

I also know that he has been suggested by Guldbamsen a looong time ago and has obviously not been approved, so I decided to give it a go and seen how the fusion team will act this time.

I adore Donald Byrd's Electric Byrd. It is one of my very fave jazz-fusion albums I suggested Byrd to the JRF team directly in 2010, but I don't think a decision was made at the time either way (nor in David's thread). I can understand why complete discography policies have concerned team members.

I own a few early 70's album (mainly those I reviewed on JMA) and a couple more from the 60's (also reviewd), and my fave is Ethiopian Knight, which a blistering JR/F. Electric & Black Byrd are also quite excellent. 

Does Byrd belong on PA??

IMHO, not really , despite the fact that Miles, Chick and Herbie & Co. are here.
I won't check if Maupin, Henderson, Priester are all on PA or not.



difficult to draw the line of course, but if we don't stop it somewhere, McCoy Tyner, Phaorah, Alice and other greats that did "70's fusion" (now tagged as "spiritual jazz") could find a PA spot as well. Pretty soon, we'll have the Kamasi and Shabaka crowds in the house as well.

Of course, we just inducted Tigran Hamasyan inside PA, and I'm not sure it's that much a good thing .

They are, for what it's worth. Good suggestion and reminder, ACM; been meaning to check out Dr. Byrd for ages and our interesting times are as good as any to start listening.

I'm the proud owner of four Donald Byrd albums and it'd be great to see him included on ProgArchives even though he probably doesn't belong here, but then again, Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock & Chick Corea are already here, so you never know. Smile

According to JMA the only fusion album out of over 50 albums is Electric Byrd with all the others being hard bop or funk jazz. Given that that many jazz artists who released a fusion album or two aren't here due to the fact that we only add the most progressive or influential of the those on the jazz side, i'd say Mr Byrd has zero chance of getting on here.
