First four albums - 1969-71.....underrated first LP but that three album run from the self-titled second to Madman are essential with Tumbleweed being a personal favorite.

Next three albums - 1972-73.....Chateau introduced a more commercial sound and sales boomed; Shoot is an interesting album that harkens back and looks forward, then Yellow Brick.....it's a jukebox of an album that made him an international superstar.  I'd take any of the first four over it.

Next three albums - 1974-75......two excellent "throw away" albums sandwiched between what many feel is his best:  Brown Dirt.  I don't dislike the album but don't think it's near his best.....in fact, I'd take the first seven and the ones before and after over it.  Then, Blue Moves - an excellent single album that just happens to be a double.  Everything that made him great is here, so is everything that led to the very steep drop in quality from here on in.

After this, 1978's A Single Man isn't bad and a good album's worth of material could be squeezed from the early 80s revival LPs like 21 at 33, the Fox, Jump Up, and Too Low For Zero.  Can't recommend anything after, even the "comeback" records, including the dud he did with Leon.

I like to feel the suspense when you're certain you know I am there.....

The One is my favourite Elton John album and I agree with Icarium that Blue Moves is his proggiest album.

Elton John's Complete Discography

(This list also includes Elton's dreadful 2012 remix album with Pnau, which just happened to go flying straight in like a bullet to Number One in the UK album charts, so it just goes to show how much I know about tastes in modern music amongst the young people of today). Tongue

I didn’t think much of The One, so maybe I need to revisit it. From this later stage of his career, the only albums I’ve really enjoyed (enough to buy) are Sleeping With The Past, The Lion King (which is more Hans Zimmer than it is Elton John), and Made In England.

The One also has the added bonus of featuring the one and only Eric Clapton on Runaway Train. Smile
