really, not even prog related for BOC?! ![]() I checked their band page, Raff wrote a nice bio. I also thought they were heavy-prog. I wouldn't have objected to that either.

OK, I had to look up the initials BOC on PA. Looks like it is actually Blue Öyster Cult. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Why is BOC considered prog here? Their early album are no more prog than their last.

Within the English-speaking world, Rush emerged just when prog was being left behind. In '76, the year of 2112, Peter Gabriel had already left Genesis, and King Crimson had shut down until the 80s. In '77, A Farewell to Kings was one of the few prog albums out there (along with PF's Animals and JT's Songs from the Woods), and there were even less prog albums in '78 other than Rush's Hemispheres and Tull's Heavy Horses. By 1980, Permanent Waves was like the only prog album out there, same with 1981's Moving Pictures. Rush filled the gap during those lean years, until Neo-Prog emerged in '83.
According to PA's ratings, 2112 is the 5th best prog album of the year (behind Moonmadness, A Trick of the Tail, VdGG's Still Life, and Leftoverture), A Farwell to Kings is #2 for 1977 (behind PF's Animals), Hemispheres is #1 for 1978, Permanent Waves is #1 for 1980, Moving Pictures is #1 for 1981. Objectively speaking, that's pretty impressive.

As a diehard Steely Dan fan, I don't hear it other than maybe one or two tracks each on Aja and Royal Scam. Royal Scam has its fusion-like moments but even it isn't fusion through and through. To riff on what BaldFriede said, if there is no place for Barbara Dennerlein in the jazz-fusion section of this website, I don't see how there is for Steely Dan. Yes, I know, if X then Y is not a good argument etc, I've been a collab too. This is not an addition/suggestion argument. I just don't hear a whole lot of prog in Steely Dan. Which doesn't mean it isn't extremely sophisticated music. But all sophisticated rock and rock related music isn't necessarily prog. Would you make room for Fiona Apple here? Didn't think so.

But you could say that about Kansas too. I would argue they were less prog than Rush, if anything. They just have a classic organ sound that sounds like prog to people (but then, even Deep Purple had that). Why, some of Camel sounds like a Canterbury-Deep Purple cross.

I always found it weird that Steely Dan is on this site, but I totally get Santana's inclusion, if only for Caravanserai. If people discovered that album from this site then it's worth it.

A Clip from YouTube. Didn’t think prog nerds would catch the reference, and I was right. |
