What I said was that in a hypothetical web page that lists Prog records instead of artists, you could have TAAB and PP, two albums that helped define Prog, and maybe not the rest of JT's production, which is more Blues-based or Folk-based. Also, if for exampke Michael Buble' released a Prog album in, say, 2022, you could have that album listed on the website without having to issue Michael with a Prog artist'passport'. Rush could have their Proggier albums listed (and their poppier ones would be left out) and Threads like this one would cease to exist. I think the web sitecshould showcase Prog music rather than bands who have at some point in their career been pkaying Progressive Rock.we could have Foxtrot and Nursery Cryme here but not Invisible Touch, which makes sense when you think about it.i hope I didn't make you hold your breath for too long! I was asleep.

And how does folk suddenly inactivate the prog element(s) in a particular work?

Songs from the Wood is the perfect "progressive folk" record, IMO.

Yes I think so. I would rather discusd whether a certain record has any Prog credentials than whether the artist does/did. Something akin to discussing ideas, not people.

Ok let me be more specific to my prior question.......Forget about the website part.
  • What are your specific reasons why TAAB and APP are the only albums that you consider prog music in JTull catalog?
  • Why do you not consider Aqualung prog?

Or Minstrel in the Gallery, Songs from the Woods, Heavy Horses or Stormwatch. May I repeat, this thread is laughable. A sensible person could list any number of albums from Rush as prog. Same as Tull. Same as Floyd.

Right on. And what if one crappy Genesis album has one prog song on it, like Second Home By The Sea. Does it stay or go? And one man's prog is another's noise, I see more arguments with this prog albums only fantasy, not less.

Aqualung gets a pass too. I did not mean that lterally, just as an example. There may be others too.i am having this discussion with you as if we just met in a record store and chatting while we are looking at albums. Do not take every word literally please.

Kind of hard not to when you word things the way you do.

In the end, 'prog' is just a word that people choose to label something. There may be arguments for or against calling something prog, but it doesn't say if the music is good or bad. So in the end all these discussions are quite irrelevant. Rush is Rush, regardless of how they sound, of whether you like their music or not (I don't particularly). Same with Tull and Floyd.

Just for the record, I don't find anything prog about Aqualung while other people do. How is that rectified?

I do not have the answer to that, but this is exactly the kind of discussion I would rather have! Is there any Prog DNA in Aqualung? To me it was akways a Folk-Rock lp...but I see that to other people it feels Prog. Interesting. Also Songs From The Wood, very difficult to put a label on! Heavy Horses? No I personally don't think it has any Prog in it.

So, do we go by what you think is prog and ignore the opinions of others? How do you make this work is my question.

A lot of people (even prog fans) seem to have an all or nothing opinion as to whether something is prog or not. To them it's either 100 percent  prog or 100 percent not. There's a lot of grey area in between in my opinon. So when someone says "aqualung" or maybe some other album isn't prog then we might automatically assume it's just a regular rock album. That's just not the case (it's certainly not the case with aqualung which at the very least is art rock).

Record store, bar, concert line, PA forums........it does not matter, the reasons don't change based on locale.

What I am trying to pull out from you is what are your attributes for something to be considered prog? Because until now you are talking at a 60,000 foot (18,287m) view point. You need to bring yourself down to earth and give your specific reasons. Saying something is only folk or blues based does not make a song, album not prog. There are other specific attributes to how a song is written, the structure, the lyrics, instruments used, themes that can make a song, album prog.

If you simply want to end this thread by saying..."look I just don't think Rush is prog at all and other than TAAB and APP, other JTull albums I don't think are prog either....". More power to you, but your gonna get a lot of questions still.

Cheers!

I think for me Progressive means it has to expand the boundaries and take some risks. The risk is to be commercially unsuccesful. Underground is probanly a better word for it. The tightrope walk rather than the climb up the charts. Something along those lines anyway. Does that match your thoughts in some way?

What in the world is regular rock?

There are many branches of rock music, one of them being prog...
