When I listen to music, I don’t care about what others think about it. I don’t care what other people choose to categorise it as. Heck, I don’t even care about categorising it myself. My main way of labelling music is whether or not I like it. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Damn straight about the thread but some of their Pop stuff was 'kinda catchy' in the best Syd sense. Once 'meta' genres are trotted out as insight the platitude 'I don't care about labels' from a website that is predicated on classification comes across as kinda borderline asinine.

So by doing some reading here at PA, reading other members thoughts and rationale on why Rush are progressive and also why they belong here on PA.....You have answered your own question. "same with Rush, who l have now learned had a Prog period then went a different direction".

So can you tell us why you think TAAB and APP are prog and no other Tull album should be in that discussion? I'm very interested in your thoughts here.....and I AM holding my breath for a response.

Yes, but we all know (hopefully) that Genesis was a prog act, so to satisfy the OP, we would have to list all their prog albums and jettison the rest. Ermm Hmm. That's not really a bad idea! LOL

I didn't get into Rush until 2112 and Kings...never bought or listened to the first 3....never thought of them as prog rock though certainly not straight ahead hard rock either....under 'heavy prog' here but could even be crossover as well imo.

If it was decided to jettison the 'non-prog' albums by a particular artist, and Genesis as referenced here are an excellent example... can you imagine the arguments we'd have on here about which of their albums are actually prog, as opposed to whether an artist is considered to be proggy enough to be worthy of inclusion on this site?

I don't remember the term "prog" being used at all in the 1970's!

Then again, my recollection of that time period is a bit, shall we say, "clouded?"

I hear what your saying stoner, but I recall the term "underground" being used.

'Progressive Rock' is the term I remember being used in the first half of the seventies, but it was broader in its compass than what we now call 'prog', as it seemed to be used to describe anything that was quality, intelligent rock music, as opposed to all the glam / soul / pop that was prevalent at the time.

I never hard the two words "progressive" and "rock" used together in the early 70s. I do recall that bands like Canned Heat and Ten Years After were called just "progressive". And their music had nothing to do with prog rock.

Yep and the likes of Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Wishbone Ash, Uriah Heap, Groundhogs, Chicken Shack, Family, etc etc would be under the 'progressive' umbrella term.

Mostly for me they are a rock band filled with catchy hooks---verses and choruses. Which can be nice if you want some energetic music. Doesn't matter to me if they are prog prog. They aren't. But lots of bands here aren't. I do agree that the drummer has always been overrated---fast yes---but not a lot of swing---sort of cold.

Exactly. His drumming feels planned ahead. "This is where I put in my roll over all the toms", and he does. He doesn't seem to go with the flow as a drummer in my opinion should. Technically he is excellent though; no doubt about this.

Drum tracks, like any other, are almost always precomposed in rock music. The intricacies in Neil's playing is always missed by non-fans. Their arrangements have always been several notches above.

Rush isn't a jazz/fusion band or a jam band where improv is integral to the formula. They're a rock band first, and they always have been.

Vangelis in crossover? Why? Progressive electronic is not right for that? LOL

Yes, progressive bands, but not prog rock bands. "Progressive" was a catchall phrase for anyone that was not AM top forty, and interchangeable with "underground."  A lot of people conflate these progressive bands with prog rock, a term that was not coined until the late 8os. At least in print.

Yes, of course. These threads, usually, are started by someone out of sour grapes. They don't like the artist they are posting about to begin with, or have only a limited exposure to the artist they are posting about, which is worse. I'm afraid that we don't help things by responding to these threads, but so it is.

I wouldn't mind (better than Prog Related), but Vangelis also plays drums, bass, piano, organ, you name it. He's not just electronic.
