I bought my first Flower Kings CDs in a store called Black Planet in Toronto, Ontario. I live in Pennsylvania and had a couple of friends that went up to Toronto semiannually, so I tagged along and found this store. The Canadian exchange rates were great back in 2000. So, I bought Back in the World of Adventures, Flower Power, and Édition Limitée Québec. I don't remember the price I bought these at. I still have them.

Black Planet was also the North American distributor for releases from Si-Wan Records in South Korea. Si-Wan was noted for finding obscure stuff on vinyl and reissuing it on CD. I believe they folded later in the decade. Not sure when Black Planet closed. I haven't been in Canada since 2001.

Si-Wan released a ton of stuff without the permission of the intellectual property owners, and did not pay the artists whose stuff they released.  So I always avoided them, though I think I may have 1 or 2 CD's by them because there were simply no other options back in the very early 2000's.

My delayed copy has arrived, spun some yesterday after stuffing my face with turkey and all the fixins.

This one will take a few spins to sink in. The 3-LP/2-CD package is excellent, comes in a slipcase with 1 gatefold holding LP1&2 and a single sleeve holding LP3, the CDs come in a plastic sleeve. The gatefold has all the lyrics and other liner notes with different band pictures on back covers.

The pressing quality is stellar, these are done by Optimal Media in Germany who is one of the best IMO, everything I get from them is as perfect as can be with no surface issues no noise at all, a flea fart makes louder noise than what I hear in between tracks.
The mix and mastering is very good to really really good, I can't say excellent as Roine still is not at a Steven Wilson, Bernie Grundman or Kevin Gray level. He's still doing a bit too much digital processing, but so far these records sound fantastic.

I really like side II so far, side I I'm hearing some Queen type rhythm guitar work..........but as stated I need several more spins to let it all soak in.

So far I'm very pleased with the direction of the music, more of what I've come to expect from The Flower Kings.

I'm pretty much in love with this album, not enough to marry it though LOL. I think it's spectacular, really diggin the funkiness, jazziness of this album and very much enjoy the shorter song structures. The guitar solo on Fool's Gold is cool, and that synth in the background.

This might take over Adam & Eve as my fav TFK albums......holy krappola I didnt just say that Shocked!!

TFK rule.

Yeah, I'm quite happy with this one.  I didn't really care much for the last 3 (though they all had some good stuff and I enjoyed them, just didn't think they were up to TFK usual standards overall), so this was a nice surprise for me.

I still miss the epics, but I think they managed to nail it here without including any and a lot of the shorter instrumental stuff seems pretty epic even though it isn't long.

By the way, guys, did you know that TFK are already working on a new studio album? Words from Roine are very promising :

Boys are at work - some randomly but others more frequently - relentlessly mining the new TFK goldalbum ....to be. 'Mindset' for moi is - How did 'Stardust' come about ... ? what was my mindset - the formula - how many risks did I take - True.. Equipment was very very simple - before the days of fancy mic pre's etc. - SWA is indeed somewhat of an innocent album - in that it came from a pure stream of creating 'good music' for ME - prog or not - but of course carrying a legacy - Not only that of King Crimson, Yes and Genesis - but others perhaps less mentioned - such as Vanilla Fudge, Cream, The Mothers, Vangelis, Marvin Gaye, The Hollies, CSN&Y, Hansson & Karlsson, Collosseum,The Allman Bros. Band, Rolling Stones, Weather Report - So here I am now trying to remember - after a good 25 years of TFKing 'round this globe - and possible close to 100 albums and amazing collaborations with people from Yes, Genesis, King Crimson, Van Der Graf Generator, Dream Theater, Marillion etc - So now - what is the gateway to a playful and fun 'Prog' album - within or without the boundaries ...? - Who's advice should I take - and who to ignore ? - What to revisit and where to move on - I will find out. ( I already do - and I enjoy in quite a bit ) - A salute to our great drummer Mirko who jump heads and tails into helping me making the demos sound decent and for me to understand the music better....

Very, very good news! Big smile

This is the longest appreciation thread ever. Guess there is still much to discuss. Carry on.

Looking forward to what they come out with. Based off what I read in the thread (read like 100 pages Wacko), Mirko DeMaio sounds like the first drummer Roine Stolt can get along with. I read somewhere a quote from Mirko stating he grew up as a fan and is now living the dream.

I don't think there were any issues with Roine getting along with any previous drummers.  I know that Salazar and Zoltan both left of their own accord, for different reasons (both wanted to play other music...Zoltan plays mainly jazz now, not sure about Salazar).  I don't know about the other two,  but one of them had a "main band" already when he joined the Flower Kings (Marcus) and the other came on board right before the FK's took a long hiatus and so ended up joining another band.  It does sound like the current formation gets along rather well on a personal level though.

I think there were some tensions between Roine and Zoltan... or was it between Tomas and Zoltan... or both? I'm not sure anymore. But there was definitely some personal issues with Zoltan.

But I agree that he was (and still is, I suppose) an amazing drummer!!!

Yeah, Zoltan and Tomas did not get along.  Apparently Zoltan did not thing Tomas was a very good musician is what I recall.

But yeah, Zoltan is an amazing drummer and certainly was with TFK's!!!!

^ I kind of agree with Zoltan... because Tomas is not a keyboard virtuoso... but he is a DAMN GOOD composer!

Yeah, I remember talking to Jonas once at a festival, and he said that while Tomas is not a virtuoso, he was/is a genius when it comes to sound and finding the right sounding keyboard sounds to create the perfect atmosphere for a song.  I agree about his composing as well.

Without Bodin's touch and [mostly] wacky keyboard sounds, TFK would have never been the compelling act they are. (To most people, of course)
He is irreplaceable for me, and I kind of miss him on the new releases. (Not saying anything bad about the new guy though)

I'm not a big fan of synths in general, I have grown to really not like what Jordan Rudess does in DT and also the same wonky stuff in Haken by Diego Tejeida, all of it is so over the top. But I never found Bodin's playing to be like this, I find what he does for TFK music is simply add color and flavor to the overall themes.

I have been really liking the recent albums, but there remains something in the back of my noggin that I find is missing, or really that I miss.
