Howdy people,

I love villains.

This is a poll for whomever that likes villains.

I didn't veer into the sci-fi domains in this poll [Oh no! Darth Vader is missing! (And oh the irony! I included Magneto! Attracted by his magnetism perhaps?)LOL] for concision purposes in scope, nor did I venture into the gaming realms by the same token. Some characters I put here like Larloch can seem confusing in this regard, but I meant I didn't include fictitious villains that solely appear in games, such as Jon Irenicus (Baldur's Gate II).

Multiple votes are allowed.

I voted for Morgan Le Fay. I love the ambiguity and ambivalence of Arthurian villains, so I would also have voted for Morgause or Mordred or Nimue, etc.

^ Oh Greg, excellent choice! David Warner also was the voice of Jon Irenicus in Baldur's Gate II. He was fabulous in that!

Sauron, at least in The Lord of the Rings books (and not the idiotic blinking eyeball beacon perched atop the tower of Barad-dur in the films). In the books, you do not see him, he does not speak, and yet his presence is omnipresent throughout the books, revealed only in the evil of his minions, and in Frodo's mind as the power of the One Ring begins to overtake his psyche. It's a rather unique take on villainy. 

One could also say the One Ring itself is a secondary villain of the story: corrosive of the mind and corruptive of the soul, capable of undermining the greatest of heroes and destroying the lives of anyone who comes into extended contact. The combination of the powers it grants and its corruption makes it both seductive and addictive.

@ Thanks Ozgur, and I didn't know that.  David Warner is awesome.  I must have first seen him in an other [D]evil film, the Omen (where he is not playing an evil character and is in my top five favourite horror films).  Loved him in Time After Time where he is playing a "ripper" of a sinister, charismatic, conflicted and ultimately quite sympathetic villain antagonist (more of a sci-fi type film).  And if this were focused on sci-fi, for any that don't know he was excellent as Ed Dillinger / Sark / Master Control Program in Tron.  I plays lots of audio only stuff, such as radio dramas, and I love him as Steel in the Big Finish Productions audio version of the classic Sapphire and Steel show. I think largely due to him, that is one of my very favourite audio dramas (more into it than the show) and is my favourite audio treatment of a classic TV show.  He's a nuanced actor and is  one of my very favourite actors.

As another villainous fantasy character, I just want to give a shout out to Krank of The City of Lost Children.

I really love the Neverending Story movie, best fantasy movie pre LOTR. In my book. I have not read Michael Endes novel but i have read Momo and i like Michael Endes fuse of philosophy and fantasy

"I'd go with something closer to your home as best fantasy film pre Lord of the Rings, The Seventh Seal. Orpheus is another of my favourite classic ones. A matter of taste and experience, of course.  I like the Neverending Story a lot and have seen it many times including once again very recently, but even against other  80s children films, I prefer Time Bandits and The Dark Crystal. And not "kid friendly" per se even though I saw and loved it as kid, but I loved Excalibur. In the 90s I love The City of Lost Children and in the the 2000s there is Pan's Labyrinth which has a dark fantasy aesthetic.  In the 70s, there is Eraserhead.

I actually didn't like Jackson's adaptation of the Lord of the Rings, and I very much seem to be in the minority there based on my discussions with others.  I loved the books when I was young.

I have a plan for a fantasy movie poll one classic by one year of 80s fantasy movies, mNy of those have a spessial charm to them, like Tron, Excalibur , Dark Crystal, Dragonlance, Laborynth, the Neverending Story, Willow, the one wierd one with very early Tom Cruise as an elf, i could manage on classoc each year, ide throw Dune in there also but it crosses between sci-fi and fantasy, aka space opera.

^^ Yeah, if this were a sci-fi/fantasy poll, Baron von Harkonen might make my villain list .  I love the 80s Dune film, unlike many many others.  It is one of my ultimate comfort food films that I can re-watch again and again and again.  I expect that I might have loved Twin Peaks so much partially because I liked Kyle MacLachlan

 

 in Dune so much when I saw it as a kid.

I might do a sinister AI, robots and computers poll at some time featuring the likes of Hall 9000 from 2001 and The Master Control Program from Tron (a film I love more than most).

I can reccomend the Spiderwick Cronnicles on Netflix, can watch it with kids yet enjoy it as a adult. Highly entertaining.

If 80s fantasy villans list one cold also add Shartptooth from Litle Foot, the evil rærat in the Secret of Nimh, though the scariest figure is the large owl.

Another "fantastic" female villainess worthy of mentioning is: Evil-Lyn of MotU. I literally liked her as much as Skeletor, and at times wished she could succeed in dethroning Skeletor.

Splendid! But I fear only 3 of us (I, you & Jeanine) would vote for him, on this platform.  Embarrassed

On a second thought, 3 votes would be more than enough to make him to top 10 easily, it seems.
