Inspired by Steve G's interesting post "Early British Prog vs American. Discuss." i thought I would post a little love to American Bands that in my youth we absolutely played alongside our British Prog Albums and never remotely considered segregating because of style.  Yes of course they are Blues Rock with tinges of country and folk.  But that was what America enjoyed and listened to, even today, and we wanted some of this great stuff in our collection too in Europe.

The reason we listened to them was for the same reasons as when you listen to a Pink Floyd, many albums had long tracks but of course with long guitar solos and you could chill out as a group of people or on your sofa and get lost in them.

But because these bands are more blues orientated you miss out on them here.  Even the British greats such as Cream you miss out on.  Because here the focus seems to be that Prog has to be either of Symphonic or Jazz origin.  It's why you have this growing Prog Related section.  It's easier to move everything into a remote unclassified section if you have to acknowledge them at all.

Anyway to start this topic with some song discussions,  I just picked at random from my collection and you tell me if this were Pink Floyd you would not be acknowledging it?  But of course you can't as the sound is Progressive Blues Rock which don't exist.

I always thought it should have been 'Prog Other'.

I definitely know what you're talking about. For me it was tunes like this.
Could have been an early Yes tune.

Ok Last one before I chill out for the evening.  Canned Heat 42 minutes of head banging from 1968.  They really are the originals when it comes to I wanna head bang music.  You feel you need to rest after listening to this 42 minutes of mayhem with great guitar, bass and drumming.

Love all the bands above especially Little Feat and Santana......here's one of my all time favorite bands from the late 60's and very early 70's.

Here is Love - De Capo from 1966.

This to me sounds as the first really Progressive Rock sounding album overall as a whole album and not just singular tracks.  Also one of the tracks even sounds like a first in proto punk.  The last track is 19 minutes which was also a record for the longest track at that time.  Not a record for a whole one side of an album which Dylan had a couple of months earlier at 11 or so minutes which was beaten out by Mothers of Invention shortly after at 12 minutes.  So in a couple of months in 1966 you had the jump from 11 to 19 minutes.

On the first side I hear a lot of Moody Blues a year before Moody Blues sounded like Moody Blues.  Also when i hear this album I hear Canterbury and Krautrock in places.  Neither of which would surprise me as this precedes both.

Well I know that every Prog Head across the world listened to this in 1970 and Suzy Q in 1967.  That progressive rock Night Club I went to Germany that I posted about previously on a different topic, I promise you someone asked for this or Suzy Q to be played almost every time I went.



Also we must not forget Blood, Sweat and Tears....

'Love' were an awesome band that never struck a chord with the general public...but lovely music.


Another one ...they had some success at times....the late  great Hopkins on piano

Wow that is really good!  Thanks for sharing it.  I will have to check into Quicksilver Messenger Service some more.  I have a few of their songs on some Psychedelic Compilations but no full album.
