Over the past year I have cemented myself as a prog fan, but most of what I like comes from the classics, usually the late 60's and 70's. Usually when I talk about prog though to other people, they tend to mention more modern bands like Dream theater, Porcupine tree, and Tool. I would like to get into these bands but I'm not sure where a good place to start would be. The thing is with a lot of prog, is that it's not something you can just immediately pic up on with your first listen, you have to ease into it, in order to get used to the styles of certain bands. Even though songs like Shine on you crazy diamond, Close to the edge, and Suppers ready may be some of my all time favorite songs now, I first discovered these bands through there more simple works like Another brick in the wall, Owner of a lonely heart, and Phil Collins stuff. So the question is for these bands, where would be a easy place to start, and what path should I take to growing towards more experimental stuff?

Dream Theater - Octavarium (quite classic prog friendly album)
Porcupine Tree - Deadwing ( I didn't like them at all until I heard this)

I doubt there is an easy place to start with Tool. Lateralus is a massive modern prog metal classic, pretty much re-defining the genre, but you may still hate it all the same. Nothing to be done if you do , just accept it!

This is tough as a lot of modern prog bands have evolved a long ways from the 70s/80s prog bands, with a greater emphasis on metal. I would bridge gap first by checking out mid 80s neo-prog bands like Marillion and IQ first, as it's not such a big jump. Early Marillion is very Genesis like, and later in the 90s they developed their own sound. Brave from 1994 is considered their magnum opus. Any early IQ album is great.

Of the three you mention.

DT - Images and Words
PT - Stupid Dream
Tool - not my bag

Others I recommend

Izz - Don't Panic
Echoyn - The End is Beautiful
Sanguine Hum - A Trace of Memory
The Psychedelic Ensemble - The Tale of the Golden King
Frost* - Milliontown
Big Big Train - English Electric Part One
Mike Keneally - Dancing
Wobbler - From Silence to Somewhere
Haken - Visions

Could go on as there is ample quantity of killer modern prog to choose from. Good luck and enjoy.

Maudlin of the Well - Part the Second

I kinda get a kick out of the 'Modern Prog' term.
The bands you listed are more or less 90's + bands. That makes them 30 years old.
After 30 years, you know what 'they' used to say about my favourite band?
Who now?  They did that song song about a lucky man right? Man...you're old.

One man's modern.
Quick story, my father, at the age of 50, quit his job as a professional draughtsman, got his teaching certificate and became a Tech teacher in the secondary school system. He once told me one of his students made a comment about 'old man'. So my dad asked him..."How old do you need to be to be old?" I think the kid said 30. So my dad asked again. " How old do you have to be, to be considered old by a 30 year old?"
You can see where this went.
It's all relative. Modern is now and a bit before.

Sorry for the sidetrack...here's a few of my suggestions from that period...and a little beyond.

Spock's Beard - Beware of Darkness
                     - The Kindness of Strangers
Gordian Knot - Emergent

As a seasoned hard rock and metal veteran, even I agree with this. It's like everything deemed prog now is basically rock/metal with keyboards or something. It's like people are afraid to make non-hard rock music with progressive elements lol. What a world.

Dream Theater - definitely Images And Words.  Octavarium is a good shout, maybe A Dramatic Turn Of Events too.

Porcupine Tree - I would go for Fear Of A Blank Planet, or The Incident.

I can't really advise on Tool, I have Aenima but didn't enjoy it.

Some of my own suggestions:

Devin Townsend/Devin Townsend Project - I feel that his stuff is very "modern prog", but it's heavy and not to everyone's taste.  I absolutely love him and his music.  Check out Addicted, or Sky Blue, or Epicloud, or delve right in with 2019's classic Empath.

Frost* - again, very modern to me; I would go with Falling Satellites.

It Bites - The Tall Ships, or Once Around The World (1986!) - covers both eras.

I like these recommendations!

Although can we really call the 90's 00's stuff "modern"? We're almost 20 years removed from some of these records.

The great thing about this thread is that the time between some of the "modern" recommendations and Close to the Edge is shorter than the time between the "modern" recommendations and the present day LOL

Modern is a very subjective word!

I would definitely dive into Porcupine Tree though, Deadwing and Fear of a Blank Planet are great albums for me (although approaching twenty years old!). Plus Steven Wilson's solo work, Hand Cannot Erase is brilliant.

But to be completely up to date, http://www.progarchives.com/top-prog-albums.asp?syears=2020
Generally, the top rated are the top rated for a reason. Personally I'd go for Logos - Sadako..., and Zopp.

The top rated are only what some like, or those that get the most highly rated votes. In the 2020 top ten, only one of my choices made it. More than half of my top ten, don't even appear in the 2020 top 100 list. All a matter of taste. Nothing to do with reason.

Not sure what 'modern prog' means but if you like those older  bands you mentioned you need to hear Wobbler....their last 3 lp's are excellent.

All a matter of shared taste, and that’s the reason. My own personal favourites don’t tend to feature highly (or at all), either. But the statement that “generally, the top rates are the top rated for a reason holds true”, and ironically your own argument against it merely reinforced it. 😄

Not that the OP appears to be paying any attention to the answers to the question posed, but I don’t think that is what is meant by the OP at all. Wobbler, as you imply, sounds like those older bands - and therefore doesn’t have the modern prog sound the OP suggested they were looking to explore.
