I remember hearing Peter Nicholls vocals for the first time when I was having a rummage around in the Lush Attic, and my first thought was, Wow, he sounds remarkably like Peter Gabriel, which has to be a good thing in my view.

“Ryker Skies” is an awesome song. Something about it makes it sound different from other IQ songs. I’ll try to analyse it later to determine why. Suffice to say for now, it’s an awesome song!

Yes, I mentioned both this song and The Province (Frequency) to you on another thread but apparently you misssed it. Edited by dr wu23 - January 28 2023 at 15:59 |

dr wu, actually I’ve been delving into this album because of your comment. “Province” so far hasn’t grabbed me, but neither did “Harvest of Souls” at first, and that’s become perhaps my favourite IQ song. I’ll keep listening!

Great songs. If only they had a better singer.

I like the guy, but like Fish he sounds too much like a prog rock singer, someone trying to mash Gabriel, Hammill and maybe a bit of Collins into one generic prog vox. Just how my ears hear it. |

I mean... how much can one be expected to change his natural God-given voice?

Peter Nicholls sounded a bit Fishy to me too when I first heard him, but I've grown accustomed to his voice now.

I don't think he sounds anything like Fish! Fish sounded quite like Gabriel, as did Collins. And that guy in BBT, he REALLY sounds like Gabriel!!!
But I think PN sounds like...just himself!

No worries...just wanted to make sure you heard Frequency...that's my all time favorite IQ lp. The Province is simply superb...not that Harvest and Ryker aren't great also. Many have compared Harvest to Suppers Ready. I like Road and Resistance but to me they are just bascially rewriting earlier songs and adding a more dark vibe to them.

Totally agree,....that's just the way he sounds. I doubt if he is consciously copying any other singer. I don't think he sounds like Fish or Gabriel per se , and as far as Hammill....don't get me started on that overemotive diva.

For me Nicholls is at his best on The Seventh House. I get the comparison with Gabriel, although less so with Hammill, but neither bothers me particularly.

It was good to see HMV was still open yesterday when I made my first trip into Nottingham in over a year although, as predicted, they didn't have any CD albums by IQ.

You were right all along. I've now listened to most of IQ's albums three times over and The Road of Bones IS a bona fide 5-star masterpiece!
