Frequency is a stunning album. I don't normally go for these deluxe editions, but just maybe for an album of this class....

On a whim I decided to give neo-prog another whirl about a 2 weeks ago. (Marillion is ok but they never really “clicked” with me.) I picked out IQ as one of the top-rated neo bands on PA that I hadn’t tried yet. Glad I did! I’ve been binging IQ music since then.
Started with ‘Ever,’ it immediately clicked (in large part due to the digital synths). Really great, concise album. Moved onto ‘Subterranea.’ I think I’ve listened to it now about 10 times already! Then I tried ‘Road of Bones,’ which didn’t leave as much of an impression, but I can sense that it might be more of a grower than a shower. And finally I’ve checked out ‘Dark Matter’ which is awesome, I’ll definitely be revisiting. All of IQ’s music is strong and rewarding to repeat listens. Their compositional style is immediately appealing, but you start to appreciate their use of theme only after repeat listens. And I’m also struck by how successful they are at the long-form album. Many bands get tiresome after 30 min, but I can listen an entire 40+ min IQ album, then immediately put on one of their 100 min albums.

I saw them just after they released 'The Wake' supporting Magnum at Nottingham's Rock City. That was a great album and I assumed that they imploded later in the decade like most of their contemporaries. Surprised to see they have now amassed such a discography!! Mind you, back in the day I preferred Solstice.

I saw Marillion at Nottingham's Rock City in the mid-1980's, although I only went because a friend gave me free tickets. I would have been better off going to see IQ instead - the only problem being that I'd never heard of IQ before joining Prog Archives in 2019. 2010: The Wake: Live at Boerderij, Zoetermeer - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL_TaS3ukydpKWG7sR4Qb24vjPuUZlnzl9 The Wake / The Magic Roundabout |

You're absolutely right! After giving The Road of Bones album a second listen this morning, I've now upgraded it from a 4-star to a well-deserved 5-star rating.

From the Outside In I love that part towards the end of Ten Million Demons where they play the Doctor Who theme. That never fails to send shivers up my spine.

That's about it from me for this thread, having just finished listening to all of IQ's albums for the second time around, with The Road of Bones being my favourite album overall.
Now it's just a question of seeing whether I can find any record stores left open where I can still buy their CD albums.

I only discovered IQ a few years ago, via this website actually. I'd previously never heard a single song from them.
Now they are my 2nd fav band (only behind Yes), and I love both their early stuff and their newer releases. I have however found it very hard to actually buy some of their CD's - but thankfully, as someone else mentioned, they have their own on-line shop. This is where I bought almost all of their CD's from, including Frequency, which i finally picked up last month.

That makes two of us then. I'd never heard of IQ either before joining ProgArchives in 2019. I have a feeling IQ will always remain my favourite Neo Prog band, even though they're the only Neo Prog band I've really listened to so far, although I still have The Tangent to look forward to in Prog Britannia Four. I just hope the HMV store in Nottingham is still open the next time I head into town, having not ventured into Nottingham city centre for an entire year now.

I doubt very much that you'll find any IQ CDs in HMV As others have said, there are some still available on their own website, reasonably-priced.

The real questions is: whats a man gotta do for the Road of Bones on vinyl? I'd take a version of just the first disc even.

You might get lucky, I've come across some prog albums in HMV - Pendragon, Porcupine Tree, Steven Wilson - but they normally file them under Heavy Metal!

^ They must have a low IQ at HMV if they think Neo Prog belongs in the Heavy Metal section.

I like IQ's music. It's nothing groundbreaking and most of the songs sound similar - that early 70's Genesis vibe. The musicianship is okay, but what I can't acclimate to is Peter Nicholls vocals. Dreadful to me, and that is why I don't listen to them much.
Noticed someone mention it's hard to find their CD's. Amazon has most of them. |

I had a hard time acclimatising to Peter Nicholls vocals too, but in The Wake of listening to all of IQ's albums twice over, he finally broke down my Resistance.
