My hot take:

  • Canterbury: Hatfield & the North (1974)
  • Crossover: Ommadawn (1975)
  • Eclectic: Godbluff (1975)
  • Experimental Post Metal: Somewhere Along the Highway (2006)
  • Heavy: Moving Pictures (1981)
  • Indo: ?
  • Jazz Rock: In a Silent Way (1969)
  • Krautrock: Yeti (1970)
  • Neo: Script for a Jester's Tear (1983)
  • Post-Rock: F♯ A♯ ∞ (1997)
  • Prog Folk: Songs from the Wood (1977)
  • Prog Electronic: Phaedra (1974)
  • Prog Metal: Operation Mindcrime (1988)
  • Psychedelic: Animals (1977)
  • RIO: Waka/Jawaka (1972)
  • RPI: Ys (1972)
  • Symphonic: Foxtrot (1972)
  • Tech Metal: Individual Thought Patterns (1993)
  • Zeuhl: Mekanïk Destruktïẁ Kommandöh (1973)
  • Related: Led Zeppelin IV (1971)
  • Proto: Deep Purple In Rock (1970)
Of course Eclectic, Symphonic, Heavy and Tech are the hardest to determine. For some subgenres (ie. Crossover, Folk, Electronic etc.) I'm dead set on a specific artist, but not that sure which album.

Zappa isn't cheating, he's Avant on here, whereas he's really just Zappa. I was tempted to pick Kind Of Blue for Fusion Smile

I was tempted to choose Miles Davis' Kind of Blue album too, until I found Jan Hammer's Miami Vice album was on PA, and on the subject of Jan Hammer, I was planning to include him in my Classic Dutch Prog Blog, until I discovered he's not really Dutch. Tongue

No, I know how to behave in the restaurant now, I don't tear at the meat with my hands. If I've become a man of the world somehow, that's not necessarily to say I'm a worldly man.

^ If you go on the home page & click on the sub genres near the top of the page you can see examples of what bands are in what genres. Scroll down from there and you can see examples of the top albums in each genre.

Here are my favourite albums in each of the PA genres I'm familiar with:-

CANTERBURY SCENE:- Khan - Space Shanty (1972)
CROSSOVER PROG:- The Moody Blues - Days of Future Passed (1967)
ECLECTIC PROG - King Crimson:- In the Court of the Crimson King (1969)
HEAVY PROG:- Steel Mill:- Green-Eyed God (1971)
INDO PROG/RAGA ROCK:- Magic Carpet - Magic Carpet (1972)
JAZZ-ROCK/FUSION:- Jan Hammer - Miami Vice: The Complete Collection (2002)
KRAUTROCK:- Agitation Free - Shibuya Nights: Live in Tokyo (2011)
NEO PROG:- IQ - Resistance (2019)
PROG FOLK:- Spirogyra - Bells, Boots & Shambles (1973)
PROG RELATED:- Jon Anderson - Olias of Sunhillow (1976)
PROGRESSIVE ELECTRONIC:- Ashra - New Age of Earth (1976)
PROGRESSIVE METAL:- Ayreon - The Human Equation (2004)
PROTO PROG - Jimi Hendrix - The Ultimate Experience (1992)
PSYCHEDELIC/SPACE ROCK:- Pink Floyd - The Division Bell (1994)
SYMPHONIC PROG:- Renaissance - Ashes Are Burning (1973)

You left out several genres.

I never noticed Jon Anderson is filed under "prog-related" in the archives. "Olias of Sunhillow" is definitely a prog album (I would say it fits into "eclectic"), not just prog-related. But this does in my opinion show how questionable it is to put artists into a certain category instead of albums. There are several other examples for this.

My list would be this:

Canterbury: Hatfield and the North - Hatfield and the North
Crossover: Supertramp - Crime of the Century
Eclectic: Van der Graaf Generator - Pawn Hearts
Heavy Prog: High Tide - Sea Shanties
Indo Prog/Raga Rock: Quintessence - Quintessence
Jazz-rock/Fusion: Weather Report - Black Market (I would have voted for "Hot Stuff" by Barbara Dennerlein, which is definitely a jazz-rock/fusion album, but she was rejected from inclusion in the archives)
Krautrock: Amon Düül II - Tanz der Lemminge
Neo-Prog: Marillion - Fugazi
Prog Folk: Lisa & Maria - Lisa & Maria
Prog Related: Jon Anderson - Olias of Sunhillow
Progressive Electronic: Klaus Schulze - Mirage (very tough choice; there were many albums I could have chosen from)
Rio/Avant: The Residents - Eskimo
Rock Progressivo Italiano: Goblin - Deep Red
Symphonic Prog: Yes - Relayer
Proto Prog: Jimi Hendrix - Electric Ladyland
Psychedelic/Space Rock: Mother Gong - Fairy Tales (best prog album ever)
Zeuhl: Magma - Mekanïk Destruktïẁ Kommandöh

Good point. I would say there is plenty of other examples. Like Yes 'Big generator' and Genesis 'Abcab' listed as symphonic prog Confused Jethro tull 'A' as prog folk Shocked Pink Floyd 'Momentary laps of reason' as an example of psychedelic/space rockSmile It is misleading, confusing and simply erroneous. I consider it as probably the biggest flaw on PA. I wish it was addressed.

Kantelberg: Caravan - In the Land of Grey and Pink
Crossover: Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells
Eclectic: UK -Danger Money
Experimental/Post Metal: Maudlin of the Well - Part the Second
Heavy Prog: Anekdoten - Until All the Ghosts are Gone
Indo Prog/Raga Rock: N/A
Jazz-rock/Fusion: Dean Watson - Track of Days
Krautrock: N/A
Neo-Prog: Nine Stones Close - Leaves
Post Rock / Math Rock: Battlestations - In a Cold Embrace
Prog Folk: Jethro Tull - Thick as a Brick
Prog Related: John Cale - Music for a New Society
Progressive Electronic: Klaus Schulze - Mirage
Progressive Metal: Dream Theater - Metropolis Part II: Scenes from a Memory
Proto-Prog: The Who - Who's Next
Rio/Avant: Henry Cow - In Praise of Learning
Rock Progressivo Italiano: Franco Battiato - Sulle Corde di Aries
Symphonic Prog: Yes - Close to the Edge
Proto Prog: The Who - Who's Next
Psychedelic/Space Rock: Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
Tech/Extreme Prog Metal: N/A
Zeuhl: Magma - Köhntarkösz

I used the categories in which the bands are placed. Not all of the albums fit in these catagories. For Instance: Nine Stones Close is filed under Neo-Prog, but Leaves comes closer to Heavy, methinks. But I dont pretend to be a subgenre specialist.
