Now, I know that some PA members cherish their pet animals and pretend their little monsters like (or not) the music they listen to. Same with me. My cat very much likes music and has a very eclectic taste (but hey, it's all a matter of education Approve ). Only rarely she makes clear to me that what I put up on the turntable or in the CD-player is not too much of her liking.

But, some very daily things normally seem to have more importance: dinner! So, just now,  dinner time dangerously approaching while listening to Sada, by Ángel Ontalva & Vespero, I was quite surprised that Miss Poes ("poes" means "cat" in Dutch...) was continuing to enjoy Paradise on the other end of the couch, clearly enjoying the music. A shared moment of pleasure, of course... Normally, she would come sit next to me, staring me in the eyes, silently... as if that's enough for me to understand what she wants! Then, when I ask what she wants she says "meow" and I pretend not to understand... This time: enjoyment, rejoice in silence. As for me!

What does your preferred pet animal (cat, dog, gold fish...) like to listen to?

Oh, and now the last song of the disc is playing, Miss Poes comes sitting very close and starts staring me in the eyes... It's a sign... Irresistible...

Love this thread topic!

I do remember when I took my late cat, Stinker (yes, I know!) back to my then home flat in Oswestry, which coincided with the first listen of the newly released Brave by Marillion. I took the sleeve note instruction to “play it loud with the lights out!” Rather literally, and once it had finished, wondered where said kitten was. Poor sod had taken himself into my bedroom and hid under the bed, thus beginning a lifetime of utter disdain and contempt for prog rock.

My present pussy, Allie (or The Pal as we call her) sits with me and helps me on a daily basis working from home, whilst passing numerous comments on how good the music is. She is presently grooving to Abel Ganz, Steven Wilson, Gazpacho, and Transatlantic, although she is rather indifferent to Black Sabbath.

Our dog, Lizzy, or Fang as she is affectionately known, spends most of her time trying to take advantage of Dad and cat grooving to said music and sneaking into the cat’s room to Nick her food!

I've never actually owned a pet so I can't speak from direct experience on that. However, I heard my uncle, who is a big fan of Pink Floyd, tell the story about how his cats hid and acted strange when playing the studio part of the Ummagumma album. LOL

^^ Ah, poor Stinker... Maybe it was the association of the move with the music of Brave that took away his braveness...? Nice to read that Allie very much enjoys prog - good thing!

Fang means "wind" in Chinese, any link? I thought dogs would be more interested in music, but apparently their stomach has some kind of priority, as JD's post suggests too...

Did you try some musique concrète? She might like it (or get crazy...)!

Well, Lizzy is quite well known for high levels of flatulence, and said levels do tend to increase vastly when contemplating modern Yes to the proper Anderson led version.

2 year old Retriever/Lab mix. She could care less about music. She's more interested in Video. When we put on our shows after dinner (currently The Crown) she lays between us and actually watches along. Horses really get her attention as do other dogs running around or barking on the big screen with audio in full theatre mode. Sometimes she'll climb down and sit closer to the screen and just stare up at it. I'm starting to wonder if she's actually following the plot now??

Years ago we had two cats named "Penis" and "Vagina". Oh, and "Vagina" was the male cat.

My dog likes the sound of UPS and FedEx trucks making a stop in front of the house. Otherwise, he seems to be mostly indifferent to music.

^ Now, that Sponge Bob theme song is moving between Rap music and Pink Floyd Ermm, so "betta" might be open to explore a wider range of music (and your son too...).

For those who don't have a pet animal: adopt a spider! They're very sociable, easy in maintenance and they keep all the cows, sheep and pigs out of the house... very useful. You could call him/her Bert (or Berthe, if you insist) - they're all called Bert anyway - and they're known for appreciating almost all kinds of music...

Most recently I had guinea pigs, now my kids are my only pets (and they aren’t kid goats). Guinea Pigs are Prey animals and quite nervous so I avoided Hawkwind, The Eagles, and Cat Stevens.   Not sure how they would have liked the Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds. I almost always listen to music in the house via earbuds or headphones, even when alone, and these days I’m hardly ever alone in the house. I did play guinea pig sounds not of the Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds variety for them and they did perk up seemingly.

I think his idea was that since he's a fish he likes the aquatic theme

Maybe I will try playing Gentle Giant's Octopus for him.

^ Good idea. You could also very appropriately try the Aquarium by Camille Saint-Saëns, from his Carnaval des animaux - if you want it more proggy you can take Ton Scherpenzeel's version of it...
