The Alan Parker produced movie based on Pink Floyd's The Wall gets little mention here. What's your opinion?

I liked it quite a bit, but I haven't seen it since I was a teenager. It's not a particular favourite of mine or anything like that. I might quite like to double-bill that with the film version of 1984 with John Hurt at some time.

Have you seen it? If you haven't and like the Wall (and 1984ish stuff), then I say go for it and watch it.

I liked it. The Gerald Scarfe animation sequences are great. The scene where Pink (Bob Geldof) shaves off his eyebrows with a bloody razor was quite memorable.

I like it, Probably give it a 7.5 on a scale of 1-10.  I thought the animated sections were great & really helped pull the film together.  I remember going to a midnight show with some friends when we were in high school. Good times !

Not a fan. Too much freudianism, and I think the music works much better without it.

I thoroughly enjoyed it. I went to Oswestry cinema, now long since closed, with a fellow Floydhead, and we loved every minute of it on release.

I only saw it once and that was a long time ago(mid to late eighties I think). I remember liking it. A bit dark maybe but I think it worked as strange as it was at times.

Also, I think it was only released on video in the US. I don't think it ever came to theaters(maybe a select few night time showings though). I only saw it because my uncle was(is?) is a big Pink Floyd fan and he had it on video(vhs).

First time I saw it as at a theatre in downtown Toronto at a midnight showing while floating on some trendy chemical amusement aids. I think I saw more than was actually in the movie.

I have the original DVD (have not been able to find a BlueRay version). The only other movie I can equate it to is Tommy, a cinematic presentation of the album's central music and theme. I think Parker did a great job of translating the material to a visual medium in this format.

I think I would have to categorise it differently than say, Quadrophenia, Lisztomania or even Across the Universe. I'm not sure why it might be maligned.

Any other examples of The Wall or Tommy style movies you can offer up?

I rate it 6/10. Pretty good, but rather depressing.

He most certainly did, especially when you consider that Waters spent most of the time wanting to garrotte himLOL

I saw this when I was in college. They showed films on Friday and Saturday nights in some of the larger classrooms. This was either in 1989 or 1990. I'm sort of in the 7 out of 10 range on the film, but it did help understand the album better.

Hi,

The film is very good, although I think it would have been "better" if folks had been able to see it in the very early days, when the music was augmented with a lot more speakers and the sound went all over as it used to in PF concerts.

Seeing it in video, for example, is not that great an experience by comparison ... but the animation material was tremendous ... absolutely fantastic.

The film experience, was far better than ANY concert, at the time ... which kinda made the story a bit disjointed, but it worked. In LA, the Wall idea did not fare too well against the media, but the shows were sold out so far in advance, that no one could really say a whole lot more ... except how many people got busted at the door of the concert hall. It ought to tell you the media madness against the "hippie" thing in a few years before, but in this case PF was not going to be denied ... it was better than anything the media could have said or tried to say to hurt it.

It was also an incredible play for the FM radio stations in those days ... unbelievable ... and 2 long cuts got the immediate attention.
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

I was an early teenager, and I think it’s the first or second “R” movie I’d ever seen (in its first run in the theaters). It had quite an effect on me - scared me sh*tless in a few spots, in fact. I think I’ve only seen it maybe 3 times maximum (the last time was about 30 years ago), but I remember almost all of it. I’m no great consumer of films so I’ll not try to speak to its quality as a motion picture, but it scared the willies out of a 13 year old, at least.

I saw the movie when released with some Floyd heads and we loved it, being well versed in the album. I believe the album was released in 1981 and the movie in 1984 or 1985. Afterwards, I saw the movie again with my brother. He was working on his masters degree at that time while also working part time and never had time to even listen to the album. He was a Floyd fan from way back, like me. He couldn't follow the storyline of the movie and was confused by the narrative. I always wondered if any others not familiar with the album felt the same way as my brother.

I saw the film on video at a friend's house when I was in grade nine. I liked it quite a lot at the time.
