You are certainly much more optimistic than I.

Yes, but it's more than that to many Republicans. Farmers in the mid west states feel like the forgotten minority. Trump really did nothing for them but he always mentioned them. So they imagined that they were no longer forgotten and had a champion. The reality of thier situation had nothing to do with it.

I agree with Steve here. We can't underestimate the influence of Trump on the republican party. Even those who disagree with him want some of his "cult of personality."

So if Republican politicians are afraid of voting in favor of impeachment because the consequences could be a defeat in their next election, that leads me to assume something that I find a bit unlikely:
It would mean that of all conservative voters, there would be a majority that wouldn't vote conservative any more, because for them it's either Trump or nothing.
I would have thought these would be in a minority compared to those conservative voters who are 1) traditional conservatives and who would continue to vote for the GOP, regardless and 2) those conservative voters who are glad that Trump's gone because they feel he was a blight on the GOP.
The way GOP politicians are acting, it seems that rabid Trump supporters must be the majority amongst all conservative voters. Can this really be?

I wouldn't be so sure about that. There are a lot of wealthy businessmen that live in NYC and odds are that one or two of them won't be able/won't want to avoid being on that jury.

I suppose no one on here is surprised about the outcome today. I am pretty much 100 percent convinced that Trump could have said something like "I want you guys to go to the capital and kill Mike Pence and everyone else you see on floor" and the outcome would have been the same. He still would be found not guilty. It's all because the republicans are thinking only about their political careers and think there will be repurcussions if they didn't vote the way they did. The others are either near the end of their terms or just don't care and actually have morals. |
Yes, that's the sad truth

Don't dispair. A lot could happen before then like Trump going to prison with no Republican President to pardon him. Now, doesn't that delight your imagination?

Trump is found not guilty of inciting the insurrection at the Capitol, by the US Senate. What a surprise.

The Senate voted 55 to 45 to allow witnesses to testify in the impeachment trial today. But I'm afraid it's just a show by Republicans to make themselves look serious when voting to not convict thier hero.

The breakdown of American voters is supposed to be (roughly) 35% Republican, 38% Democrat, 15% Independent, undecided or some form of Libertarian, with the remaining 13% lost to the ether. |
Roughly that adds up to 101%..... 13% lost to 'the ether'.......the new party ...Etherians. |
Yes, the key word was roughly. Pardon my faux pas. The percentages are actually 34, 38, 15 and 13.
