1 February, Shadowyzard:

We are counting the days until your poll!

Let me ruin the surprise. Clown

Actually, my current idea is: a song and a cover version of that song. We haven't done something like this, have we? How does the idea sound to you?

Yes, but only one song, the cover.

Now we have to choose two songs, the original one, and a cover version.

Good idea!

I think I will skip the next poll. It is rather time consuming, and I want some time to make some album reviews. Then I will probably be back for the following poll.

I may be the next on the list and that's what I had in mind. A straight poll about the eighties with one song each.

Hope I did a decent job in my turn. Actually, I wasn't very happy with the two nominations format either. That's why I came up with the "one original and one cover" concept. Otherwise, it wasn't serving a meaningful purpose methinks.

I am again late to vote, sorry. I'll do it today; and I'm looking forward to Lewian's turn. The '80s? Even if the '80s turns out to be a niche decade, I'll always be all for it. Heart

Why didn't you just go with one if you didn't like the two two nominations ones (which just so happened to be back-to-back)?

There was no expectation that anyone need follow suit with two nominations, so you could have just gone with one. Part of the fun for me is to see which twists every one of these topics might take. I want to be surprised, and maybe have to pay close attention to those rules/ have to read the OP carefully and then think about how I will interpret things. It's pretty open beyond a certain format and expectation. From poll one to two it changed quite a bit, and could have gone back to the first without alternates.

Lorenzo did that, and I did too, but then I was planning to do that before Lorenzo did, because I liked the idea of doing that duos of contrast (having two was integral to my idea, and then my idea was that would be a way of listing more in the poll while not bothering with alternates). It was a coincidence that we had two two nomination polls in a row. I would have done it anyway. The other idea I had toyed with was going back to the original and just listing one choice (no alternates and no backsies) -- I would have rather that be a a one week contest (easier when people only mention one total).

I liked Lorenzo's idea of the two protest songs a lot.

I mostly like the idea of one song only because that means that it's easier for people to listen to and comment on everything but I hope that people will play around with idea and surprise us. I took on board some earlier comments and will not mention any of my themes in advance (I think it's more fun when we don't know, but at the same time, knowing gives us more time to prepare).

I do wish there was a quicker turn around rate, this last one was started 16 days ago. They just got longer and longer. I know it was stressful, and I did my last of the week one on a very tight schedule (partially cause we'd gone off schedule before) but I found the one week more fun. Days would go by without any posts or discussion. Too long and it loses momentum. I'd rather ones with short songs and just one mention generally than others that take weeks before you get to the next round. I do like there to be time for comments on the selections, since reading the comments is one of my favourite parts.

^ I did that both because two nomination thing was becoming like a "nouveau tradition" and also the cover idea was complementary per se. Your "duos of contrast" was also a good idea. But other than that, I wasn't very impressed by the 2 song nomination cooncept.

Not a big deal, anyway. Thumbs Up

It was just coincidence that there were two back-to-back ones and this has been open to new ways of doing things and different approaches since it became a series. That's part of the fun for me. Some things did become tradition, but that doesn't mean that one can't break from those. I like it if each person take a somewhat unique approach, and hopefully people are paying attention to the OP enough to see what changes come with every round. I'd be fine if someone said, this round we only vote for half a song. I rather wanted to do one that is not music, but then I thought that that's probably too out there.

The only thing I don't like now is that they last too long for me, and I start to lose any sense of any excitement since they lack momentum. It's become like the Kenny-G of poll series (I kid). Maybe a week is too quick, but maybe ten days or even 12 rather than 14, 15, 16, 17 (not sure what the longest has been). It's become kind of like the party that goes on too long for me -- the good parties don't just end when everyone is sleepy and bored, the good parties have the guests who don't want to go and the hosts has to kick them out (in parties I have gone too, this has often involved a baseball bat). That said, I understand. Too quick a turn-around and there's burn out.

My next one, if I do one, might have an added way for people to "comment" in an easy way on all of the songs since not everyone has the time or inclination to comment on the entries, and will be back to the original's just one please -- one song, no alternates....

@Greg,  I agree with what you are saying. A week goes fast and there needs to be time to listen, but 14 days+ seems too long. It depends on the poll. Should goes longer when it's open to having alternates and discussion, but if it's like in the past where we nominate one song each and then vote, I think a week to 10 days is right.

I am not up for a couple of months, but if we don't have one by then, I think I'll do a prog one. It's been a while. Get others on the site (sticking with the 50 ratings/reviews or fewer) and do a nominate just one song/instrument. Maybe put in a theme, maybe not.

I'm not sure about which one was better, a week lasting polls or two. I'll respect the decision, whichever that will be.

^ I think that should rather depend on the OP and how it's being done, yes, scheduling can be an issue, but maybe we can find ways to be more flexible. Already some have gone over time, and some have been started late, but not so much the other way around.

^^ Thanks Geo. I see part of the problem as scheduling, since things have been pre-planned -- it's easier to remember, well, it's once every week or two weeks on a Monday. But I don't think that should be hard to organise. Hopefully there can be some flexibility. Some would work best at seven, some at nine, some at 14 (well 14 days is too long per my tastes generally, part of why it was extended once before was because of the holidays, which made sense). It really does depend on the approach and it was the alternates (an idea I really like, by the way, and don't want to see gone, but I don't want to see those every time either) as you say that needed more time. A week just to make nominations seems a very long time to me, and it has gone over that to give more people a chance before. It's like the good parties where the host pulls out the baseball bat (or maybe I have my own ideas of what makes successful dinner party, no wonder they never come back. ;) I'm of that sad, formal dinner party stage of life (not now, of course), and god, I miss that. Its dragging, and there does come a point if I've had the chance to get ahead of the curve that I just want the next one up. Days of inactivity in the topics is a sign that it's going on too long for me. If activity is quite consistent people are having fun, and the host is hopefully still on active duty passing out the hors d’oeuvres, well, maybe extend it a bit, but like they say in show biz, always leave them wanting more.

On another note, since this has come up before. Sometimes the next poll has been delayed to give some people more time to vote. I have no issue with people still posting to an older one when a new one has been started.

I think in most cases a few days to nominate might be ample time instead of a whole week. I would love to see a faster turn around also to have as much variety as possible. People wait many months for their chance (or next chance) now. I don't think it matters if only ten nominate one round, and maybe some others nominate in the next.

Sorry, I ramble. I like the idea of another Prog poll. I do like having the theme, but of course the theme can be there is no theme and I also like that, and part of what I like about the music is just how eclectic the music is. I love that it gets me listening to music that I wouldn't hear or think I'd be interested in otherwise.

And while I like surprise, of course an advantage of saying the theme in advance is that people can pre-plan their choices (those who are paying attention to this topic at least).

It was a beautiful poll, with a vast range of good music!
