A series of pictures by famous German artist and poet Wilhelm Busch ("Max and Moritz").

Zum neuen Jahr begrüßt euch hier
Ein Virtuos auf dem Klavier.
Er führ' euch mit Genuß und Gunst
Durch alle Wunder seiner Kunst.

We're introducing the new year
With a piano master here.
He'll guide with genius on his part
Through all the wonders of his art.

Well I definitely look like the other guy when listening to KE or ELP that's for sure.
What's your favourite KE piece to play?

what I love about this series of pictures are the fine details. for example: the listener starts feeling uncomfortable with "passagio chromatico", and indeed the note sheets of the pianist show some chromatic passages; also the pianist's coat tail twitches in this picture.

and when he starts "fuga del diavolo" the sheets really show different musical voices the pianist has to play, as in a fugue, and the tail of the pianist's coat is tied into a knot in that passage - diavolo!

and in the last two pictures of the pianist playing he is airborne, with countless hands. and of course the sweat dripping from the pianist's hairs when he proudly, or rather arrogantly, receives his applause. and there are many more little details like that.

Bush is not called "the grandfather of comic strips" for nothing; he was a virtuoso at drawing, just as the pianist is at playing in this strip

Hi,

Lovely pictures ... wonderful!

These go along (FOR ME) with the pictures from PDQ Bach's book ... where the scores of each piece of music are shown ... and quite hilarious, and they come off a lot like your pictures ... I'll see if I can send some on, but I normally have issues with adding pictures here ... and gave up a long time ago.

(The pic's are on the other computer and I have not turned them and the rest of the network on yet. I usually give them all a rest Mondays so I can do some work on things if I need to.)

(The link thing stinks and won't accept it! Says image broken!)

One of the best pictures is the score looking like train tracks they get tied into knots towards the end! Not to mention the "hole" in the score and all the notes fell into it!

BTW, An Hysteric Return:  P.D.Q. Bach at Carnegie Hall . is a must have on anyone's collection ... simply magnificent!

Hi,

YEP ... LOVELY ... I DON'T EVEN THINK THAT MOST MUSICIANS CAN WRAP THEIR IMAGINATIONS AROUND THESE THINGS, AND THOUGHTS. The ones in the above cartoons are easier by contrast, but trying to play these ... would not only be fun, but exciting!

Hi,

I have the book, and it has been, over the years ... one of my favorite things to read and enjoy.

It is autographed, BTW, on a day when he did a concert in Santa Barbara.

The hardest thing to imagine, is watching folks actually play these things ... serious orchestras and such, many of them local, and you know right away that a lot of what they do is not easy at all ... and has to be setup correctly ... so seeing these things "done" in some tube videos, is far out, and not only entertaining, but also weird ... and one of the things I like to tell some folks (specially discussions as to what IS music or not) ... is that you LITERALLY can mix anything at any time, and it all works, depending on how you set them up.

Too many folks seem to think that only their DAW is right, and the correct this and that, and sometimes, seeing a mind like this, do just all this in music ... is fantastic to my mind.

Another example is the choral part in 200 MOTELS, done at UCLA just before Gayle passed away, and you can tell that thing was really appreciated ... for once a choir could get it on!

That was amazing Jean and Friede!

I love cartoons Big smile

Since you're talking about piano virtuosos, let me recommend one of my newest finds.

This Russian guy was really one of the absolute best 20th century unknowns.

the amazing thing about this series of pictures is that they are from 1865! you can clearly see how modern comics were influenced by this, especially for the depiction of movement. but other things too, like the enlargement of eyes and ears for special effects or the expression of moods
