I had to get the snow-blower out two days in a row last Monday and Tuesday. It was 3°F (-16°C) this morning. I regret eating the extra blanket back in January. I could use it right now.

In the States, it depends. It shuts down a lot in the southern regions. Just a dusting gets folks are riled up. Up here in the north, things mostly keep moving unless the accumulation reaches 6+ inches (15+ cm). That's about the amount it takes for my workplace to close. Back in the 1990s, 12+ inches (30+ cm) was the average for a closure. However, high schools and elementary schools often close around here with a forecast of about 2-3 inches. A lot of it depends on how effective your local snow plows are at keeping the roads plowed. Ice is worse than snow and most places shut down if that's expected.

^ For schools here it also depends on who is busing the students. In particular, if a district has its own school busses they're more likely to close for snow since its their asses on the line if an accident might occur.

Until we find a way to have snow and ice not be a dangerous burden, shutting down is how society should work, IMO

I wish we shut down more here. I don't mind driving in it when traffic is light, but during rush hour I'm always concerned the guy that's on my tail is going to barrel right into me.

Yeah. Luckily right now I have no reason to drive in it so I pretty much have become a hermit over the past two weeks.
