As to "Tomorrow Never Knows":

Yep, I know that one, too, and I thought of it when thinking about this poll. However, it's much closer to the original in its mood, so I like it, but it's by far less, let's say, surprising than the one of Daniela. Also I like Ringo's drumming more for this one, and the no drums approach has better chances to attract me to a cover than doing things differently from Ringo.

Black Sabbath - "Black Sabbath" is one of several songs I knew in advance. I still struggle to get Black Sabbath. I'm aware of the impact they have had, but the music does little for me; maybe you just have to be a heavy fan... The Type O Negative version begins with some very creepy sound effects. Also it contains spoken words rather than singing - until the tempo change. Again: not for me, but tastes differ.

BaldFriede pt. 2
"Thoth" (original) starts with some tick-tock sounds and a flute of sorts. Then enter a beat, and later an electronically manipulated speaking voice. I like it, but I think I would have to hear it some more times. The other version doesn't sound that different sonically (it appears to be the same artist), but it's a different composition of course. Once again there's spoken word. I liked the first version much better.

TCat
Unicorn - "No Way Out of Here". I didn't know this one. I'm undecided as what to think of it at this point. Maybe it requires a relisten. It sounds like it's from the 1970's. I like some of the guitar work, but I find the lead vocals a bit anonymous. Iron & Wine with Ben Bridwell: I think I like this version better, especially the transition to the chours. A more sparse use of the pedal steel would do good. Not that I don't like pedal steel, but it would be more effective if it just came in once in a while. Good song in any case.

Soundgarden - "Rusty Cage". I once had Superunknown copied to a cassette tape, but I only rarely listened to it. The Badmotorfinger album I haven't actually heard before, so this song is new to me. Apart from Nirvana who were usually very melodic, grunge is not so much my thing. Not that it's a bad song in any way, but were are in the area of heavy guitar riffs and hard rock screaming, and it is not exactly my home ground. But I acknowledge its qualities. Johnny Cash (the clip provided in the original post is blocked here, so I am listening to the music video instead) is more up my alley. More restrained. Sara DeBell: And now for something completely different. It starts with a metronome and several other pling plong sounds. Then there are som jazzy keyboard instruments. Clearly an original take on the song, and not without humour. I also like the strings, they make a nice contrast. An all instrumental version.

I'm glad you listened to the Sara DeBell version of "Rusty Cage" as I'm not sure if anyone other than you and Nickie actually listened to that one.  I put it there to show the contrast further extending the contrast with the original and Johnny Cash's version, showing that you can interpret any song any way you like and almost get a new song out of it.

By the way, that Sara DeBell album "Grunge Lite" is all grunge songs done in a way that almost makes them "supermarket friendly", but it also is quite an interesting collection of deconstructed and then rebuilt songs.  Worth a listen.

And suitkees comes in, just under the wire:

suitkees:  Nirvana “Smells Like Teen Spirit”  Very familiar with this tune, of course.  I love Tori Amos’ cover, can’t remember if I included that in the previous covers poll or not, just for fun.  Covered by Shaka Ponk:  Here is another pretty female vocal taking the song on, and ooooooh!  With strings!  Loving this.  For some reason, it is so much more ominous to me when a woman sings this song.  She’s joined in with the male vocal as well, next.  This is just so restrained and spooky.  In this version, the band kicks in full bore after the first couple of verses.  Kind of an amalgam of the acoustic way to do this song, along with the heavy grunge way it was done originally, with some classical overtones as well, provided by the strings and full chorus.  Definitely this one may be a contender for me.  Kim Wild “Kids in America”  Very 80’s tune, didn’t remember it at first, until the chorus.  Made for MTV.  Cover by Shaka Ponk:  This time staying basically true to the heavy synths and upbeat feel of the original, but it’s quite a bit heavier.  The kids were so much more optimistic in the early 80’s!  I like this a lot better, though.  😊

If there is still time, here is another pair: The second movement of Haydn's symphony No. 94. First, the original version:

And here is the Hoffnung Music Festival take on the same movement.

As much as I enjoy these polls, I just can't seem to put in the time that I would like to with everything else that I am doing in the site.  I'm afraid I'll have to bow out as far as participating, though I've tried to make it last as long as I could.  Thanks to everyone for the fun and for sharing.  I've become more familiar with some excellent music since this poll started, and thanks to Lorenzo for inviting me along with his excellent idea.

As far as this poll, I will go with my first choice with the song "There's No Way Out" for my nominating song.

^ TCat, sorry for your decision, but all the best to you anyway.

BTW, please put your nominations in your first post here, and put them as the 1st and 2nd videos. I'm requesting this from all of you. There has already been 5 pages here, and my job will be easier if all of you do that. Thanks.

I've stated my request twice. Wasn't it clear enough? Or is "editing" a demanding job?

I want you to edit your original post and add your nominations as the first and second videos. Therion and Accept can stay under them. But not necessary for you, as I'll not forget this. Haha.

And concluding (most likely) with The Anders:

The Anders:  Haydn’s “Symphony No. 94,” the 2nd movement.  I think most people know at least the basic melody to this, especially in this forum.  Does have little surprise dynamic changes within a mostly light and lilting melody.  It eventually repeats the lilting phrases more emphatically and adds swirling strings to the fore in a merry dance, and then back to the teasing lightness with woodwinds.  Strings continue down the lane and are met with another bout of more dramatic orchestration, ending with soft and sweet.  Covered by the Hoffnung Music Festival:  Here is the same piece of music, albeit with VERY big dramatic shifts, done in a comedic way.  They continue with this approach with very slippy-slidy strings when the occasion warrants it and very stern accentuated parts.  This is really fun, overall, reminds me of Warner Brother’s cartoons.  Certainly Haydn’s intent was to be comedic, as well, though of course,  we don’t have a live recording of his music with audience from his time.  Can’t help but wonder what he would have thought….was he funny, or would he be upset?

^ I'll place the nominations in the options about 15-20 hours later. As soon as you see the nominations there, you can start voting. Wink

Meanwhile, anyone can STILL participate. You have more than half a day. Thumbs Up
