OK, as prog is allowed and my collection is somehow scarce of covers (and I posted quite a few of those I like most already in the earlier poll) I take a different approach here... namely I went through my favourite tracks of all times, of course all so good that one might think they're uncoverable, and looked for covers on youtube that are really great. And the winner is... The problem of course is that everybody knows the original and this will cost me votes, but whatever... I can listen to the TNK original night and day, it is always fresh, and what Daniela makes of it is just incredible. Doing this I also found great female covers of Can's Vitamin C and Radiohead's There There. Maybe I play them later.

So I listened to various ones and some of my thoughts -- I just want to focus on the first duo mentioned (since some listed more than one duo and I have some time constraints) and will work on the assumption that those are the nominated duos. This will be short:
Shadowyzard: "Dönence". I really like the original. The cover is kind of Dönuts (with an emphasis on nuts) and I appreciated it more musically when I just listened rather than watched. It's fun. I was thinking that I'd like to hear Crazy Vahit perform Tubular Bells, although then he might call it Tubular Balls cause its rather nuts. Cristi: "Seawinds". I'd heard that Accept version and like it. On first listen I wasn't that keen on Therion's version, but the next day I played it properly without looking at the thread, hurrying through or being distracted, and I think that it's a great cover. The seawinds will change direction under the right circumstances. I prophesy disaster: "The Garden of Earthly Delights". "USA, USA!" shouts the angry mob (MAGA crowd etc.) at the doors to the Capitol building. I knew the United States of America song, and love it. I might have heard the cover before, but I really loved it. I could well understand any reluctance or refusal to change your selection, because it's a great one. I was all for keeping America great with those selections. ;) Hiram: "Type O Negative". That doomy BS, and I don't mean BS in a bad way, just Black Sabbath. A song I know quite well. I hadn't heard the cover before. The vocals take some getting used to for me (cookie monster stuff as it is sometimes called) but it works. BaldFriede: "Satisfaction". I'd say I cant get no, but I really like the Dennerlein one. It's so very different that it took paying attention to and looking up to know that it is a kind of cover (more based on or inspired by than a cover I'd say, but then maybe my ears were too covered too easily notice). I'd actually heard both, the Rolling Stones one of course is famous, and the other I had heard because you often mention Dennerlein. I'm not sure if that is intended to be your nomination since you have mentioned four duos. Looks like you might have been thinking about changing it to Thoth (I already knew Nick Turner's Thoth and love it). TCat: "No Way Out of Here". Cool, the Unicorn has transformed into a duocorn. I enjoyed those, and that is a very good cover (think I prefer it to the original). The Anders: "Carlotta's Galop". I'm a fan of Nino Rota and 8 1/2 and enjoyed the cover version. I've definitely heard of Petra Goes to the Movies before. Snicolette: "Is It Like Today?" . Definitely a country thing going on. Think I've heard the original before. I enjoyed both despite not totally being in my wheelhouse (getting outside of that wheelhouse is one of the joys of and interesting things about this series). I guess we all like being exposed to different types of music here mathman0806: "War Pigs." More BS, my BS-o-meter is pinging hard and heavy. What a heavy and great song that BS one is. Definitely one of my favourite BS tracks and heavy tracks. That's kind of exemplary of how I like it hard and heavy. And that is a very cool cover. Logan: "Into the Night". Twin songs for Twin Peaks. No need to comment more on my own selection (Just adding this in case it helps keep track of the order, although I might have made mistakes). Ronstein: "For Absent Friends". Of course Genesis and the album it's off is very popular at PA, and I like the song. I think Sinclair did a terrific version. jamesbaldwin: "Via con me". Looking at the original album cover, this is something of which I should be abreast. I like it, and the song cover. Lewian: "Tomorrow Never Knows". of course I know the Beatles one very well, and it's a great one, and I really like the cover version. By the way, I would not discount voting for a duo when I don't know both versions well (or in this case, had never heard that cover). Tancos: "Rythme Futur": This is one where I think I'd only heard the cover and not the original. Great stuff. I know of Django Reinhardt better than I know his music. Tapfret: "Fairies Wear Boots". While I know Mirthkon quite well, I hadn't heard this. As expected, Mirthkon put its own very enjoyable spin on the music. Hope I caught everyone. {Just a note, when I tried to add quotes for songs to my last poll I was getting errors and so edited them out -- just a potential head's up} Edited by Logan - February 02 2021 at 15:36 |

^ No, voting hasn't started yet and probably won't until the weekend (Sunday?) to give people lots of time, and then a week to make one's three vote options selections (unless it's being done differently this time). And so that's the third Black Sabbath song for this..

^ You're certainly never short of BS south of the border.
EDIT: LOL, no offence to Americans (BS everywhere). I recently listened to a podcast about QAnon, anti-vaxxers, and the BS people buy into. Very cult-like. Black Sabbath is the good kind of BS. Edited by Logan - February 02 2021 at 14:02 |

No offense taken. There's a reason we live close enough to make it to Abbotsford or Langley with a small backpack on a brisk 2 day walk. Though I hear the Mounties are really cracking down. They no longer carry your pack for you when you cross.

Plenty of crime in Langley and Abbotsford. Be careful, the Fraser Valley is the wild west of Western Canada (said with not a huge amount of exaggeration). I won't suggest that you pack arms, though, or even legs.

Oh I know. We go there all the time...or should I say The Beforetimes. Plenty of evidence of meth and heroin around the tracks in Abbotsford. Still, its a beautiful valley and it still feels safer than anywhere down here. Love to go way up past Hope into the canyon and then come back for Indian food in Chilliwack.

It's quite an interesting album, sometimes a bit weird. But I guess she is better known for her acapella version of The Who Sell Out.

Here we go again….this one is going to be SO hard. I can’t rely on my usual, “Oh I know that
song, so can’t vote for it,” quite so heavily.
Fine if I know the cover, but choosing the best cover is still going to
be really hard, as I don’t know any of the cover versions (so far). Here we go, with first impressions of Page
One.
Shadowyzard: Barış Manço “Dönence” Begins with some xylophone, then some synth hits and bass kicks in. There is a magnificence feel to this, also a bit apprehensive feeling, especially when he begins to speak. Doubled guitar lead commences, and back to the bass line. Very dramatic vocals and stance from the singer when his part begins in earnest. Cinematic feel to this for me (not knowing the words). Another guitar lead after a repeating sort of bridge. The feeling for me is of a history being told in song. Nice, never heard this before. Cover by Deli Vahit; This has much more of a Disco-y/Middle Eastern treatment in the arrangement. This is actually a lot of fun, I enjoyed the seriousness of the original and also how it fits so handily into a much lighter frame. The dancers are so fun, too, I spent some time in the Middle Eastern dance community, always enjoy seeing good dancers in pretty costumes. Cristi: Accept “Seawinds” A song of someone leaving home behind, perhaps looking nostalgically at both times past from home and also of those times before the life of the singer, to return. Hard rock here, in a classic format for the genre. Cover by Therion: This has more symphonic grounding, and with female vocals. It has a richer tone to it, to my ear, the majesty of the piece feels more properly decorated to match the heroic, yet wistful tone of the song. I prophesy disaster: The United States of America “The Garden of Earthly Delights” I heard this a million years ago, it seems and I know I saw a copy or two cross my path as a psych record buyer at a used record stoere in the early 80’s.Psych space music with a female lead, who kind of reminds me of Jacqui McShee in a way, for some reason, although she is not quite so clear as Jacqui. Lots of electronic sounds and whirly-swirlies. The psych folks really got a kick out of Bosch. I’m surprised this didn’t do better in it’s time. Cover by Snakefinger: The sound is a bit different, with the male vocals and guitars! It mostly follows quite closely, otherwise, except with less whirly-swirlies. But still a nice, complementary piece, to be played side by side with the original. Well done! BaldFriede: Welcome to these polls! The Rolling Stones “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” Of course I do know this one, so I’m mostly interested in hearing the cover you selected, as I’ve not heard that. This particular version is the original mono. Great classic rock tune, with tons of sass. Cover by Barbara Dennerlein: Starts off with quirky organ and horns, funky/jazzy percussion. Slows down a bit for some bass and then a horn solo. What a fun cover this is, turns it completely around. The Beatles “Yesterday,” Again, I know this one, a beautiful, wistful tune, way beyond the boys’ years. Now on to the cover by Barbara Dennerlein: Now, I think I know a little more of what to expect, but let’s see what she does. This one keeps the feel more of the original, with the organ also reminiscent a bit of Procol’s “Whiter Shade of Pale,” due to it’s tone. Very pretty ornamenting with the electric jazz-style guitar. Nice riffing on the organ about 1/3 in, which leads to a more pronounced shot of electric guitar. Kay Ballard “In Other Words) (Fly Me To The Moon)” Romantic period piece, an evergreen love song with orchestration typical for it’s time with a superb songstress wistfully confessing her love. Covered by Barbara Dennerlein: This version is much snazzier and jazzier in feel. I like the slip-slidy strings that come in, gives it more of a gypsy jazz as opposed to almost a polka feel. She is a lot of fun! Nick Turner “Thoth” Ethereal flute begins the composition, percussive sounds in the background and some twangy string something. Intensifies in feel, then robotic (?) voice tells the tale of himself, as it is revealed that this is the god, Thoth. Fades out. Next up is another look and listen at the god speaking of himself again, with some great, searing space-out lead guitar and percussion. I prefer this take rather than the more synthesized voice one. Hiram: I think this is your first time in these polls? Welcome! Black Sabbath “Black Sabbath” Very familiar with this iconic piece, pretty much set the stage for metal ever since. Very ponderous and atmospheric, slow build and solid performance that gradually builds in speed and intensity by all these young kids. 😊 Covered by Type O Negative A lot in the same vein (lol), but even more slow and ominous than the original (although the original was considered shocking by some in it’s day, by these guys’ time, not so much). This one adds some whu whu whu noises and spooky keyboards to the even-more-spoken (and growly) than Ozzy’s vocals. They follow much of the trajectory of the original, with the pace picking up towards the end, as things just get steadily worse for the narrator. Mike: Unicorn “No Way Out of Here” Americana/Alt Rock-ish band here. I like the rustic sound of them, you have a great ear for this kind of thing, always interested to hear what you bring that is out of my more normal-for-me sphere. Some twangy guitars, nice harmonies, maybe a banjo in there? A bit of piano underpinning, makes me think the place they’re talking about is some haunted honky-tonk somewhere down a back road. Careful if you go inside! Covered by Iron & Wine and Ben Bridwell. You may remember I love Iron & Wine, but I’ve not heard this, so looking forward to it and here we go. Here it is presented in a more Americana than Alt Rock sound, although at times the harmonies are reminiscent of CSN&Y. Same almost haunted place feeling, but with some steel guitar and crisper vocals and harmonies. This one gives me chills. Excellent choice and an excellent cover of the original. 2nd selection of Soundgarden’s “Rusty Cage” Raggedy electric guitar opens and jumps right into their particular blend of heavy/grungy/alt/rock. The guitar continues relentlessly driving this song of rebelling against an abuser. About 2/3rds in, the pace slows to the end. Cover by the great Johnny Cash. This one has the classic Cash sound, with relentless acoustic guitar this time, Johnny’s evocative voice and piano underpinning. I find him more convincing, truly, in his portrayal of quiet, rather than loud, anger. Covered again by Sara DeBell. This one starts off with clop-clop percussion and xylophone, some slidy, slithery strings and bouncy keys. Joined in 2/3rds through with a bit of orchestra and organ. Definitely a truly different version! Quite a lot of fun The Anders: Nina Rota: “Carlotta’s Galop” Loved the film! And a galop it is, indeed! Maybe with a few fences taken, too. Definitely has the feel of cinema, there is a comedic edge to it (fittingly), I could see a vaudeville orchestra take it on. Cover by Petra Haden. This one is even more comedic, with it being done (all?) with voices. Really fun, warped Warner Brothers cartoons feeling to it. These were both inspired! Intrigued to hear more of this. George: Black Sabbath “War Pigs” Another Sabs classic piece, crunchy and heavy, Ozzy’s almost-monotone giving the song a feeling of numbness. Bill’s powerful drumming keeps driving it forward. Covered by Brass Against ft Maya Azucena. Very heavy, this time with so much brass! Great idea to cover this, in this way. Oh yeah, great pipes on Maya! Absolutely just as powerful, with the band as killer as the singer. And a bonus, MetalTrump’s “cover. “ So funny! And I so agree with you. Lewian: This one I do know and I just love this version. I think it’s just spectacular. I hope some others here haven’t heard it with the vocals and lyrics put to the piece, so they can have the joy of hearing it for the first time. I know you said it’s out of competition, but I do love seeing it here, anyway. |

Normally I prefer to vote for songs I didn't already know, but this time around there are quite a few familiar songs. So I am not sure if I can keep it this time.

Here are my comments on the first songs. Shadowyzard Barış Manço - "Dönence". Again, I already knew this song, but since there are so many familiar songs in this poll anyway, it might actually be a contender in the end. I love the xylophone intro and its interplay with the trademark "keyboard wizard" stuff. Quite proggy, and I also like that there is a clear oriental flavour to it. Later it turns into some funk/disco with a really great guitar solo. Unfortunately the cover version is absolutely not for me. It does have some entertainment value, and it is quite fun to watch, but I clearly prefer the original version. Cristi Accept - "Seawinds". I knew about this band, but not really their music, and the song is new to me. A sort of hard rock ballad, and quite an interesting one. The composition isn't that straight forward, and I like the tone of the lead guitars. The cover version by Therion sounds like it's from sometime in the 90's (the other says early 80's to me). The two versions aren't exactly worlds apart, and I wouldn't try to pick one of them. I prophesy disaster I think I had heard of the United States of America, but I haven't heard any of their music - at least not to my knowledge. Typical late 60's psychedelic sound. Not what I listen to the most, but I like it. Reminds me a bit of Jefferson Airplane. I like the soundscape with various sound effect. The Snakefinger version is very different. More avantgardistic, and much more up my alley. But I like both versions. Contender. BaldFriede I know both "Satisfaction" and "Yesterday" forwards and backwards and can sing them in my sleep (is "Satisfaction" your nomination by the way?), but the cover versions are new to me - all instrumental and in the jazzy area. Sadly that type of jazz does little for me. The original versions are sublime of course. "Fly Me To the Moon" I had heard of, but I hadn't actually heard the song before. I've never been a fan of Tin Pan Alley and things similar to it.
