This album takes a turn for the better establishing the band,s foray into the mainsteam now minus steve hackett and peter gabriel .The best track i feel is UNDERTOW a tony banks compositon comes out later in his solo work A curious mind great album two other prog like songs SNOWMAN and BURNING ROPE ,are very good epic songs .The open track DOWN AND OUT i find reminds me of WATCHER OF THE SKIES classic genesis sound also a shout out to THE LADY LIES great production value strong record a must for genesis fans.

Love this album. Don't care what the critics say. It was the first Genesis album I heard from start to finish. I became lifelong fanboy thereafter.
Objectively 4 stars. Subjectively 5 stars. |

Opposite for me I'm afraid. Start of the decent into just another MOR band.

Probably the most underrated album in the Genesis catalog.

After Gabriel and then Hackett the music was never the same ....I stopped buying after Wind...I inherited the lp(aswell as the next 3 lps) from my brother about 7 years ago and played it few times but while pleasant enough it never grabbed me like earlier Genesis. Sounds a bit like Wind except without Hackett.

Wind and Wuthering is quite a fractured album , you can almost hear the band falling apart. ATTW3 is a powerful and very focused record. Yep it has romantic themes (OMG) but the songs are all good. I don't find any weak moments at all , even Follow You Follow me has grown on me on the years. Great prog moments such on The Lady Lies, Deep In The Motherlode and Burning Rope really hit home and became a staple of the live shows. The 2007 remaster is a must though. They fixed the issues that perhaps held it back a bit.
My third fave Genesis album after Trick and Foxtrot. 5 stars all the way.

A big disppointment when I first bought it (I didn't know Hackett had left before buying it), and it took me a while to get into it. All I could dig were the opening tracks on either side (D&O and Motherlode), sooooo on the whole I disliked it. TBH, I lumped it with Duke as bad albums, but once Abacrap, IShapes, Invisible Touch etc... came out, they became average albums In retrospect; it's still serious set back and step back, but given the context (end of prog) and circumlstances (a trio), it's a good effort. Today the only track I'm still irritated at is FYFM, but then again, I loathed YOSW before it and much harder. (TBH, I never liked anything on the Pigeon EP either)

'Deep in the motherlode' is a fantastic track, but unfortunately I have not (yet) enjoyed the other tracks. Might give the album another listen actually.
I used to not like the 'Abacab' album like you Sean, but I read a comment on here (Cristi, I think) going on about how great Dodo/Lurker was, so I had to listen to it. Of course, I loved it, so Abacab has grown on me.

I said that? ![]() someone cleverly compiled some songs and b-sides from Abacab. Sounds really good. |

Studying the lyrics of Down & Out (great drumming too) wll give you the reasons why the band went down the road they took, though I suppose that they diidn't know that it would lead them to Abacrap and They Can't Dance. Getting to grips with D&O should give you the keys to most tracks on Three; .

Five star album? Ballad of Big, Snowbound, and Deep In the Motherload are all filler. Just awful. Remember Hackett stating soon after the album's release that he couldn't believe the kind of music Genesis was now putting out. I concurred. Will give it 3 1/2 stars though.

I like this album and also think it is underappreciated. It doesn't quite come up to the level of the previous albums and has a bigger share of filler. Shame they wanted to do the short song route to get the most ideas on it. Sometimes more isn't necessarily better. Replacing the filler with a long, complex instrumental would've made this a better album.

It's got some really good songs. And some really proggy ones, even if they are not that long. I like to compare it to ELP because of the power trio format.

Love, love, love this album. The closest we'll ever get to Genesis meets Phil Spector.

It is a very odd album. Some really great moments alongside some overly slushy ones. Transitional.
