My poll on the "Protest songs / folk songs" will start next monday, January 4th.
Amos Goldberg (professor of Genocide Studies at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem): Yes, it's genocide. It's so difficult and painful to admit it, but we can no longer avoid this conclusion.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ABOUT THE NEW POLL ON PROTEST SONGS / FOLK SONGS

How many songs should I choose?

Please choose two songs with a maximum total length of 12 minutes. You can choose them from the same artist or from two different artists.

How are these songs supposed to be?

If you can, the ideal would be to choose protest songs. With "protest songs" I mean songs with a social, political, ecological theme etc. You decide when a song can be considered a protest song. You can choose protest songs of any musical genre: folk, rock, jazz, electronic music etc. You can also choose them within Progarchives as long as they are taken from albums with less than 100 ratings.

What if I can't find the protest songs?

You can participate anyway by inserting folk songs. By folk I mean American, Canadian, English, Irish folk but also the folk or ethnic music of every nation (Japanese, Turkish, Danish, German, Italian etc). This music can be played both with traditional acoustic instruments and with electric or electronic instruments, as long as it is folk. Peter Gabriel's world music is also good, that is songs that combine ethnic music or instruments from different countries (like Scottish bagpipes in a song played with African rhythms). You can also choose folk songs within Progarchives, in these categories: Prog folk, Proto-prog, Prog-related, as long as they are taken from albums with less than 100 ratings.

Let's see if I understand:
If I participate with U2's Sunday Bloody Sunday and Stormy Six's Stalingrado, featured here in PA in the album "Un biglietto del tram" is it okay?

That's fine! They are two protest songs, and the second is allowed because it is taken from a Progarchives album with less than 100 ratings.

Wait, let me give you another example.
If I participate with Suzanne Vega's Luka and John Denver's Thank God I'm a Country Boy, okay?

That's fine! The first is a protest song, because it is about violence against children, the second is an American folk song.

Let me give you one more example.
If I participate with Have I Told You Lately That I love You, sung by Chieftans and Van Morrison, and with Monte Seris by Bitti's Tenores, featured in Peter Gabriel's World Music

(you can listen to it here catalog, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=evDP0yOjPkc )

is that okay?

That's fine, because they are two folk songs, the first Irish, the second Sardinian (from the Italian island of Sardinia). Well, the second (only vocals) is so hard... ardous... Confusedbut it's ok!

Do I have to put the lyrics of the two songs?

Yes, very good, you have to put the lyrics of the two songs, absolutely. Even if they are not protest songs. So instrumental songs are not allowed.

Can I post other songs besides the two requests?

You can report another one, only one, specifying that it is out of the competition, for the pleasure of making it known to the participants, as long as it is a protest song with the text, and you can get it from wherever you want, even in Progarchives.

Thanks, now it's clear.

Hope so!!!

I forgot about the folk twist, so I was thinking of a possible future poll where the theme is folk music (of any kind). But maybe we can have that too anyway?

I expanded the theme of the protest songs because I would not want to reduce the choice of the songs too much, and so I thought of making protest songs with the possibility of participating even with folk songs.

We will see if there will be many or few protest songs and many or few folk songs.

But your idea of folk music is fine for me, it is a very large genre and you can do a second poll focused only on folk songs.

Slightly surprised to be on the list as I think I hadn't shouted after my last poll (I thought I think up a good new topic first and then ask for adding me to the list again), and I'm happy to let others go first as I have done a few. However if you want me there I'll come up with something.

I don't remember exactly, but looking at the previous calendar you were in that position, so if you wanted to conduct the poll on February 15th, I'd be happy.
You are a great strength for the group with your ideas.

These are ideas I have for future polls:

1 Asia. We've had Latin America and Africa before, and the format would be similar to those: music from Asia, related to Asia, or with inspiration from Asian music. By Asia, I understand the parts of the Eurasian continent that lie east of the Bosporus and the Ural mountains, and south of the Caucasus, that is, including the Middle East, and including Indonesia, Philippines and so on.

2 Folk music. This is a wide term of course since most corners of the world have some sorts of folk music traditions. But there are many possibilities. It could be traditional folk music of any kind, it could be modern folk music such as neo folk, or folk music mixed with other genres, like folktronica, folk rock, jazz and folk and so on.

3 Choir. It could be regular choir music (a capella or with instruments), or just music where vocal harmonies have a significant place (like f.e. Queen).

^ so this time by folk you mean folklore, I tried to mix both with my choice in the last poll, failed miserably, few liked that song.

Asian music- Don't know much, I know a few bands from Japan, but one is heavy metal, two are fusion and one post rock. LOL

As for choir, don't know much either, not my thing.

I mean folk in the widest term. Things like Woody Guthrie or Pete Seeger count as folk too in my world.

Also, in another poll there was an Italian musical project based on their folk traditions, and it did well if I remenber correctly :)

with folk it's confusing to me, because it can be acoustic guitar driven music and then it's folklore inspired music. Confused

I was actually considering doing a poll with modern artists doing their own renditions of traditional songs, but if someone else wants to do it, they can since I'm not on the slate until April.

The Anders: I like all your ideas, particularly maybe many don't know much Asian music (I know a little bit) but Asian influences are all over the place. I think that'd be my favourite of yours, but the others are good, too.

I'm toying around with the idea of doing the 1980s, or maybe just 1980-1985. Another thing that I think would work is to go with some moods other than sadness... happiness, or aggression maybe.

When it's gonna be my turn to create the poll, I have two ideas and I plan to use both, but here they are:
- later day songs from long time, veteran artists that we think are great
- women that ROOOOOOOOOoooCK! we did the singer-songwriting type, but I want a poll with women singing/bands that are really rocking, from the Runaways, Heart etc to Arch Enemy if anyone likes them. (just saying) Tongue

I don't know much about Asian music either, but that was actually the point - to get to know some music that we don't hear very often.
