I don't know most of these. In the 80's I was mostly listening to Led Zeppelin, the Tubes, Yes, Genesis, King Crimson, the Moody Blues, Pink Floyd and Rush. Other than those mostly classic rock on the radio. Even later I never really heard most of these except ELPowell. Not fair to vote when I don't know most of the others though.

I was listening to Duran Duran and Depeche Mode (two bands I still listen to today, and which I would happily argue as having prog tendencies. A lot of ‘80s pop is highly overlooked and underrated, and it’s notable that in recent years there has been reevaluation of quite a few ‘80s bands, so that what might once have been guilty pleasures are now nothing to be ashamed of. (Not that I’ve ever been ashamed of any of my musical pleasures, and have never had any I’ve felt guilty about enjoying.)

But in terms of this poll, my vote went to Queensryche, and their first (IMO) prog metal album. Up until that, they had hinted at being prog metal, but hadn’t taken the final step. (As I argued in the “first prog metal album”, when someone suggested a the Warning - a great album, no doubt, but more proto prog metal than prog metal proper.)

I only know six of those, so won't vote.

ELPowell would be my top choise of those I know. I gave in an awful review on PA many years ago, but my re-appraisal is more favourable. It has great highs and awful lows, which is in keeping with ELP albums.

The Ozzy album disappointed me at the time. I loved Bark at the Moon, but TUS seemed week in comparison. I don't care much about production, but I seem to remember the weak, tinny Ron Nevison production robbed the album of any power it could have had.
Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

I was mainly listening to Synth Pop in the 1980's, so apart from a-ha and Talk Talk, most of these albums passed me by at the time. I only discovered Emerson, Lake & Powell's superb album just a couple of months ago. Embarrassed

I'm surprised three giant albums (if you ask me) are not getting any attention, possibly because they're metal or even is it possibly they're unknown here. Confused All three of them amazing debuts, from Candlemass, Heir Apparent and Crimson Glory.

well, this is no surprise, I wasn't expecting you to know these to be honest. No offense.

I pretty much love anything Leif Edling is in, or has/had involvement in, so Candlemass is definitely fine with me. That would probably be my second choice after Queensryche.

(Perhaps strangely, the one album of Leif’s I’m well aware of not having listened to is his solo album. But I love Krux, Avatarium and The Doomsday Kingdom. If it’s true that Leif has ME, and it would explain his withdrawal and absence, that’s a really sad thing. It’s such a hideous condition. I have two friends that suffer from it, and I wouldn’t wish their suffering on anyone.)

Those are three bands that I'm not really familiar with.  I think I tried Crimson Glory once, but can't remember now.

Checked my iTunes, I have 3 songs from Candlemass from a Metal Blade 25th Anniversary Box Set.  I will check them out.  I have two songs from Crimson Glory in my collection, but nothing from Heir Apparent.

I like what I am hearing from Candlemass.   Being they are from Sweden, I thought they were more of a black metal band with the guttural screaming that I don't like about a lot of modern metal.  This is good.  Reminds me a bit of Annihilator.

1986 is pretty modern considering the music that gets discussed the most in these forums is from the 70's.

Candlemass is one of the best heavy/doom bands ever. Crimson Glory and Heir Apparent are examples of early progressive metal. Heir Apparent came back with an excellent album a couple of years ago. I don't think they deserve any mocking.

^ thank you for the vocabulary lesson...

You said: "Never heard anything by Heir Apparent. It's music from 1986......been there done that, time to move on!! LOL"

so this sarcastic remark was supposed to do what? Confused
