I like Ozzy Osbourne's album, but it'd be The Ultimate Sin not to vote for Emerson, Lake & Powell.

ELPowell. Like the other thread on Floyd's AMLOR album, this one is sort of soft spot because it was actually the first ELP album I bought. I was a teenager at the time and Touch and Go was being played a lot on the AOR stations. This one started my journey going through their back catalog and discovering their 1970s masterpieces.
It's a product of its time. Side A was good. Side B had a lot of filler on it. Great ending with Emerson's take on Holst's Mars the Bringer of War.

Ozzy from your list, that's a great album. As far as others from '86....
Steve Winwood~Back In the High Life: Just played this one the other day after too long of a hiatus. Such great songs and production. Robert Palmer~Riptide....that MTV video 'nuff said! Madonna~True Blue..gotta give props to Madonna great performer and singer. Plus she dedicates a song to Jimmy Cagney on this album. She always gave recognition to those that came before. Boston~Third Stage: by this time the band was already in break down, 8yrs after Don't Look Back...Fran, Sib, Barry were gone. Most of these songs written well before so they still have that classic Boston flavor and sound.

I thought of Boston, like I said I gave up on putting AOR albums, also thought of Journey. Seeing Madonna, a mediocre singer if you ask me, getting praise here (and voted for in another poll) gives me a headache, I don't get it. |

this not a prog poll. And who did you vote in the poll? Why do I feel patronized when reading your post?

^ It's kinda a dose of PA medicine 'round these parts, not liking a particular prog band gets you ragged....like for example liking Steven Wilson, Genesis (post Gabriel), Rush, Dream Theater, Neal Morse, Pink Floyd.
Plus you asked "What other good and great 1986 albums are there? (non-prog)" You could have added "that only I approve of and like...." then it would be a different case. Carry on...

All I said was I did not understand the praise Madonna gets. I think she is a mediocre singer. It's not an attack on you or your music taste. A bit of an overreaction on your part, don't you think?

I have to admit I am on Team Cristi with this one. Not a fan of local girl Madonna. I can take in small doses and actually like a couple of songs, but mostly a

I went with Yngvie, but really, none of the above. 1986 is right in the middle of the period when I quit bothering with any sort of "popular" music and listened mostly to classical.
Some possible write-ins, not necessarily prog: Pastor of Muppets, The Queen Is Dead, Daring Adventures, Graceland, Polka Party, Tones.

I first met Yngwie's music in the late 90s, I guess. Trilogy should be the record. I still love it. Magic Mirror is my favourite song from the album. Yngwie's first, Rising Force has some mind-blowing songs, like Far Beyond the Sun; but Trilogy has a concept album air and it flows nicely till the end.
Anyway, I'll vote for YJM - Trilogy as you should have guessed. |
