I recommend my two current favorites.....Pennyworth(Epix) and His Dark Materials(Showtime)...both are excellent.

I wondered about that. I know we started to watch the first episode months ago and my wife was 'Meh' so we moved on to another series. I am still curious. Thanks for the heads up. Next up...either Goliath or Succession

Spoiler... I was disappointed ....it is set in late 1930's LA and while the acting and production is good, the storyline didn't grab me like the first season.

Original series was excellent. Gave me a whole new appreciation for Rory Kinnear. Just about to start the latest
Penny Dreadful: City of Angels. Not sure how it will stack up.

If you like classic Victorian Britsh horror like Frankenstein, Dorian Gray, Dracula , Jekyll and Hyde, then you might really like the Showtime series 'Penny Dreadful'.

^ You're quite right and Tati is playing with that: in the same image things are going on in the foreground and in the background at the same time (and sometimes in even more places). And sometimes he puts the sound that should be in the background on the foreground while you're watching an action on the foreground with which that sound does not correspond (and the foreground sound is put in the background)... Confusing, maybe, but it is tremendously well done, to play with our focus and incite us to shift focus every time. And every time watching this film you discover new things...

I have watched Mon Oncle and Trafic, and then approximately half of Playtime. I really loved the first two, but Playtime was difficult for me to get into - I think there was a little too much going on at the same time. It is filled with so many details that you don't really have time to rest your mind after a scene and reflect on what you have seen. But maybe I just have to watch it multiple times to get into it. The other two were more straight forward.

More easily available (and French), to continue with some subdued humour: the films of Jacques Tati (esp. Les vacances de Monsieur Hulot, Mon Oncle, Playtime...).

Yes, I live in France, but I am from the Netherlands, so you might not be surprised I know Jos Stellings work quite well. If you like the absurdist humour in this vain, you might like some of Alex van Warmerdams's films: Abel, De jurk (The Robe), De ober (The Waiter), but I think his De noorderlingen (The Northeners) has had the most success outside of the Netherlands. Otherwise, and more recently, Borgman is quite good too but it is more a kind of thriller.

I second that recommendation. The book won the Booker Prize, the most prestigious book award in the UK, in 1997.

If you like Rushdie's Midnight's Children, try Roy's The God of Small Things. (I'm talking books here, not films.)

I got into realist British comedy sitcom by The Office, chances are this is better known than the following that you can try if you like that: The Thick Of It, Getting On, 15 Storeys High, This Country, People Like Us, The Job Lot, Twenty Twelve, W1A, Outnumbered, People Just Do Nothing. (Or try any other if you like any of these.)

If you like James Bond, you might also like Agent 327 - a Dutch comic series about said agent from the Dutch intelligence agency, and in many ways a deconstruction of James Bond. Edited by The Anders - December 15 2020 at 14:19 |

since you are from France it might interest you that the outdoor scenes were shot in Paris. and if you like Stelling's "The Illusionist" you should watch his "De Wisselwachter" ("The Pointsman")

If you like American Beauty, try the ballsier Happiness by Todd Solondz.
If you like Forrest Gump, try Sling Blade or Being There, which are so much better. If you like Cronenberg's body horror films, try Altered States. If you like Bergman's cinema, try Woody Allen's Interiors If you like Hitchcock's cinema, try The Talented Mr.Ripley If you like Disney, try a more mature take on animation with Studio Ghibli's filmography. If you like Fincher films such as Seven or Zodiac, try The Spanish Prisoner. If you like The Matrix, try the movie which served as "inspiration" for the Wachowski's (as a way not to say the movie they ripped off)...Ghost In The Shell. |
