I definitely agree, Harold the Barrel could have been a hit. |

That track always stood out to me as the most "A taste of what's to come" Genesis track.
I still stand by that it also feels they hit a new level on their recorded performance of Fountain of Salmacis, too.

^ Fountain of Salmacis is a banger of a song. Top tier Genesis.

The only thing wrong with Nursery Cryme is Foxtrot turned out even better than it. Oh, and the production couldn't quite handle Steve's absolutely massive distortion.

Porg for short. My love of music doesn't end with prog! Feel free to discuss all sorts of music with me. Odds are I'll give it a chance if I haven't already! :)

I don't really hear any "massive distortion" on NC. What in particular are you referring to?

The Musical Box in particular. Steve's guitar parts are super loud and distorted.

As a Botanist, any album that has a song that (correcetly, in Latin) namechecks a plant is great! Hogweed is one of the first of Genesis' satirical tracks and a great mix of the beginings of paranoia regarding 'invasive non native plants' (indeed more a topical subject today than ever) with 'Day of the Triffids' sci-fi.
Much of the 'Musical Box' was part of what the band termed 'The movement' which was written and/or jammed out in the period (at 'the Cottage') in the pre- Trespass 1969 period so would have been written in part by Antony Phillips. |

What you're describing is a limitation of production and mixing, mostly due to clipping. I also agree completely I can hear a lot of stuff on the remaster, because it's such a high quality rip from those master tapes! Smokey perfection. I agree that Foxtrot is superior.

I agree it's really on the production end. The worst offender are the loud parts on Return of the Giant Hogweed. Phil Collins spoke once in an interview about the density of sound and not having room for the sound in that album. The band seem to have learned that they needed to write with production in mind. I don't like the writing changes and timbre changes they made on Foxtrot though. Personally, I rate Nursery Cryme higher than Foxtrot. That's me. |

^Yep. It must be a production thing because Steve's guitar sounds fine to me. I also think Steve was trying to prove he could handle the more agressive material and not only play the soft pastoral parts.
As for Foxtrot VS Nursery Cryme I probably prefer NC also. Foxtrot has supper's ready but NC just flows better imo and has stronger shorter songs. I think if it wasn't for the hard work they put into Trespass which was probably a learning process for them more than anything else we wouldn't have had NC and FT. Oh I never meant to imply that it was on Steve's end. Definitely they just didn't have access to recording tech that could capture the sheer volume they were putting out, which leads to the clipping and distortion. Also after relistening the other day I found the heavy distorted parts of The Musical Box I was thinking of are probably Banks' organ/keys, which is the most metal I've ever heard him play, lol. \m/

Took me a long time to get past the muddy production , basically until 2007! Yep easily the best album of 1971 , well maybe Pawn Hearts aside.
